Post by: Cosmos on April 13, 2007, 08:07:36 PM

Well, before I answer this, I don't care what ANYBODY SAYS....
they aren't artists, they are MUSICIANS

Artists Paint pictures, and sculp things.

Actors, Musicians, Performers ARE NOT ARTISTS. They're actors, musicians and performers.

But If you want to know what Musicians work Im anticipating the most...

Im big on Clutch. And their new Album, full of MUSIC, that an ARTIST DREW PICTURES FOR INSIDE OF THE JACKET, came out last tueday.

Also, I crapped my pants waiting for blood mountain by MASTODON.

LOL the reason why I called them artists is because like people who draw, write, or build.. they create. And I consider someone who creates to be an artist. So nyah! :p

Yeah....If you create MUSIC youre a MUSICIAN. If you Create ART, You are an ARTIST. If you create a HOUSE you are a CARPENTER.

An accountant creates finacial records....dosent make him an Artist, does it?

Sorry...I prolly sound angry...Im really not. Ive just had this discussion alot....And being as Ive literally starved to accomplish myself as an ARTIST it bugs me when people throw that term around.

If you are even going to insult real artists by calling musicians artists, at least have the decency to call them "Recording artists"....but thats still bullcrap if you ask me.

I agree with gemini.

Uh, I'm really not aware of any new music from and musicians I like that happens to be coming out any time soon. But if the rumor proves to be true, then you know I'll be waiting for the new Grand Funk Railroad album. Or, rather, the new Grand Funk... I prefer GFR as a name. The word "railroad" is made of Phwyn Jelly.

I also agree with Gemini, as an artist myself (well, art student) it's annoying how people in dance, drama, and music are considered artists, along with the people in art.  Like, come on, what did they do to deserve the title that artist deserve?

Create?  Most people create fecal matter, does this make them artists?

Yeah, And if I draw a Picture of a guitar does that make me a musician?
Sorry for the MAD CRAZY PWN'ING mid.

Seriously, GFR? New? Wow....neat

New 3 Inches of blood is soon. Im stoked for that.

New Dr Octagon....For the hippity hoppers out there

I'm gonna have to agree with Midnight. To me, any profession or skill that is not created directly for the service of another is considered an art. Drawing a picture, designing a building (in certain cases), and writing a song are condidered art.

Even with cooking, if your primary goal is not to satisfy the hunger of whom you are serving, then it is considered art.

Hell, I even condsider video game designers who aren't primarily concerned with selling their game as artists. The service concept comes from the making of money.

I do not consider Graphic Art as art. I do not consider a well drawn picture as art. To me, gemini sounds more like a drawer. You draw pictures.

As for albums, hip-hop has been going very slow lately...

Yeah, I don't really listen to hip hop anymore.. after 50 cent came in it just died... My brother's a hardcore lil' wayne fan tho.

I'm into the rap.
Well, the old skool variety. That's when it actually took effort. I still listen to Sugar Hill Gang, some Run-DMC, Beastie Boys ( ^_^ ), and the like.

You draw pictures.

True true....But once a year I exibit my paintings too.

I paint them for service of myself...Because I sell them and Make Money.

Anyhow, For the sake of off topic debate....

A CHEF creates Culinary wonders.

An ARCHITECHT designs buildings. Asthetic, or otherwise. Hence the terms like "Art Deco" applied to architecture and interior design...because some buildings are designed for functionality...And some for asthetic. Allthough It may be "artistic" in nature, They are not really an ARTIST perse.

In support of your argument, If I draw a logo for my friends business, it is not "art". No. You are correct.

But when I paint a Picture it is art.

But also, in the spirit of self-criticism, I have not painted a picture in over a year.

But in Self defense....I have taken the right classes...Studied the history... I paint neo-impressionist. I just dont post the stuff online. Its hard to scan a Five foot by three foot piece of wood with streched canvass.

Anyhow, Yeah. They would at best be a "recording artist" or "performing" artist

But don't bastardize the word. People like Van gough and Salvador Dhali went insane for the sake of being an "Artist", and calling  say...
Audioslave or L'il John an artist is an insult to those dudes

For the most part I agree with gemini.

This is the part I have a problem with. If you produce an image, you are not the sole definition of an artist. If you draw a character, or a place, or an event than it isn't art. If the image is an expression of self or your enviornment, than it is art.

This I completely agree with.

The word 'artist' is merely a term. Simply because it's associated with Michelangelo does not mean you have to design a new Sistine Chapel to be considered one. A person can be a good artist or a bad artist, but if he or she spills grape juice on a canvas to make art, that person's an artist.

The same goes for arguing if rap or hip-hop qualifies as music. Music can be a bass drum pumping at 1 beat per minute.

You can say a particular brand of beer is crap, but it's still beer.

I agree with mess. Specially on the rap/hip hop being music part.

Saying musicians aren't artists because they make music is like saying painters aren't artists because they make paintings. If you wanted to you could come up with a more specific title for anyone other than "artist"

That said, I was hoping this was about graphical art myself and am somewhat disapointed. :p. Not caring about music that much, I'll drop out.

I agree with Mid, Sai and Aso.

Also, Coldplay. They're supposed to be releasing their 4th album this year, and if it's anything like Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X & Y, it should be fantastic.

Music is art. therefore musicians are artists. Why is music in the "Fine Arts" departments of any school? Art does not necessarily mean Visual art. Don't be so obnoxious about asinine points of view.

I'm looking forward to my physical copy of NIN's Year Zero. I have the leak already.

I'll agree with charaman here, the album I'm most looking forward to (in terms of recent releases) will be NiN's "Year Zero", which went on sale in England yesterday! Going to go into town soon and grab it and memorize it all before I see them at Reading Festival in August!

Aside from NiN, I may pay more attention to Megadeth and Linkin Park, although I've almost grown out of LP. Just another month to wait for "United Abominations" (Megadeth), although I may pre-order it now... it's actually fairly cheap.

But, all in all, the album I am looking forward to the most will be the return of nu-metal legends... Slipknot. The nine-piece announced that they will be reforming some time at the beginning of next year to record a new album, after spending some time either relaxing or with side-projects.

Yeah, I heard a mention of a part two to Year Zero, supposedly coming out next year. Should be sweet, although I'll need to judge Year Zero Part 1 first, lol.

I'm just looking forward to the summer. It'll be my first big festival experience and some of my favourite bands will be there with all their new albums. I just need to get Year Zero now to actually prepare myself.

Blah blah, not to offend you emii, but I hate when people say things like, "The music now a days sucks" or "I don't like new music".

I personally love Rise Against, I bought their CD the Sufferer and the Witness, wicked fuckin' good. Best CD I've bought in a while. I'm also excited for Linkin Park's new Album, I may go out and buy that too. I only buy Albums of bands I'd like to support.

I also want to get Bad Religion's new CD, I'm pretty sure it's called American Jesus.

The music now a days sucks. Or rather, mainstream music. Anything popular is basically ****, and the only good albums are done by bands that have been around for years.

I never said that, but while we're there, there's always exceptions to the rule, but with entertainment as easy to break into as it is now... it's pretty bad.  Good new music is hard to find.

ZKX is sorta right, and I do keep up with my favorite people as they release their new albums.

Sorry for puttin words in your mouth man, didn't mean to be so hard on you. I get what you mean about mainstream, I'm just saying there's a lot of good stuff out there that's by new bands and stuff. I listen to so little rap or hip hop or raggae tho so if you're talking about that mainstream, then I'm lost.

Rock:

ACIDMAN
Modest Mouse
The Strokes
Anamanaguchi
Minus The Bear

Hip Hop:

Ghostface Killah
