The demo has been released. A note:
In the credits, the midi "The Godless Evangel" is listed as unknown. It's actually by drenrin, and this will be fixed when next I upload an update. Which will be soon, given that credit is important. Also, the many "unknown" chipsets, which I got in a massive replacement RTP pack, are by First Seed Materials.
Characters:
Christophe DiSayre
Age 25
Weapon: Handgun
Special Skill: Treatment (a treatment used on bullets to invoke status and elemental damage)
Christophe is a down-on-his-luck ex-scientist whose primary hobbies include drinking, cursing, and micromanaging. As a result of a traumatic incident involving his best friend/colleague, Grey, and a test experiment, Christophe is incredibly wary of all things supernatural. Unfortunately, his knowledge of this experiment ties him into a conflict greater than he could have possibly realized.
Caolan Ravendi
Age 17
Weapon: Mage's Gloves
Special Skill: Magecraft
In contrast to Christophe's cynical nature, Caolan presents a front of carefree innocence. He's not as naive as he would have everyone believe, however--- his magic seems to be more of a burden than most mages deal with. On occasion, Caolan is very cryptic, to the point where Christophe never knows how much of Caolan's words to trust. As the story progresses, Caolan finds that even he does not know himself as well as he had thought.
Lyra Elseth
Age 24
Weapon: Sword
Special Skill: TBA
A former general of the royal army, Lyra defects for reasons she has yet to reveal to Christophe. Her brother, Athair, remains one of the army's deadliest generals. Christophe meets Lyra in the city of Huinn, where she warns him to leave town before her brother arrives. Little does Christophe know that Lyra's reasons for warning him have little to do with his own safety.
Athair "Flameheart" Elseth
Age 30
Special Skill: Flameheart (powerful fire-type moveset, better than Caolan's magic)
Weapon: Big red-bladed sword
Athair is considered one of the best younger generals available to the kingdom of Marionna. Despite his strength and reputation, Athair is cheerful and easy-going. Since becoming involved with his new superior, Athair has cut off ties to Lyra and grown intensely close with Arin, who accompanies him on almost every mission. He becomes good friends with Christophe.
Arin "Shadowblade"
Age 22
Special Skill: Shadowblade (dark-elemental sword attacks and magic)
Weapon: Rapier
Arin is well known not only for his status as the youngest of the elite officers, but also for his mysterious origins. All anyone seems to know about his background is that he was found by Athair two years before the events of ES. When angered, he often overreacts, especially when someone he feels responsible for is hurt. During the course of the story, Arin eventually decides to protect Caolan.
Grey Antharos
Age 34 at death
Grey was a scientist working on a project involving the Domierni, a race of people charged with maintaining balance between chaos and reason. A calm, reserved man, he was Christophe's idol until his death. Grey's project will slowly resurface and once more become the focus of Christophe's life.
The story follows these characters, as well as some others that aren't fully developed. I'm having a lot of trouble summing up without major spoilers, so just.... uh.... hold off on that. I will tell you that the theme is the balance between control of one's own life and letting life sweep you along, or something like that.
The link:
http://www.savefile.com/files/888754
Some warnings: The shops in Huinn don't work. And there are some typos. But it's all good, I thinks. Yay.
-
Ahhhh.... hooray for warm receptions. *grin*
Nah, in case anybody cares, here are some updated "features" that are in. I'm not sure whether I want to go into detail about the characters outside the demo, but I will if you want. ^^
Amazing "Features" That Aren't Actually Amazing But Make Me Feel Happy Inside:
1. All custom sprites for all playable characters and important NPCs. I was using CharasEx, and then I discovered all the lovely spriting tutorials and decided to make something cooler.
2. All kinda-custom facesets (all right, I use Facemaker, so actually they're not custom...... but whatever), with emotions
3. In my opinion, a pretty awesome storyline...... but that's for you to decide when I post the demo and a little more synopsis..... ^^
4. Possible use of ammo for Christophe's gun
5. Possible use of "desperation moves" (general term for all Limit Break type dealies)
6. Custom party change system involving HQ, etc.
Please note that I know all of these have been done before, but I hope that what I come up with is okay for a noob game.
-
Keep at 'er. Screenshots would be swell
-
I want screens :(
I like Christophe.
-
We'd like a bit more detail on the basic story of this game, rather than a short list of features and some character profiles. That'd give us a much better idea of what the game is about.
And yes, I strongly advise you to post screens. As of now, I don't know what to be expecting from this game.
-
I want screenshots!
You want screenshots!
We all want screenshots!
-
Awesome. What programs can I use for screenshots, and how much of the story should I post? Spoilers? Yes, no?
And I'm glad you like Christophe. It makes me happy that he's a geek.
-
Use Printscreen key on your keyboard. Right above insert.
-
Ahhhh..... okie dokies. Screens soon, probably before Monday, since I redid the faces and the sprites and a couple other things and haven't quite fixed all that. It shall be done.
-
It's hilarious that anyone over the age of 20 is always an ex- something.
Keep it up! It looks pretty good so far, and the characters seem pretty different and well thought out.
-
Actually, Christophe was sort of intern at a lab, so that makes sense. He's too lazy to get a real job, and his first "quest" is actually to cover his debts at the local bar. As for Lyra..... ummmmm...... out of logic, sorry. ^^
-
Ha.....
About those screens..... my jump drive is MIA, and the online compie here doesn't like CDs, so it ain't happenin' for now. Intensely sorry. However, I am prepared to give a more well defined pitch:
Two years before the events of Ember Sky.....
Christophe is employed as an intern at a research lab, working under his friend and idol, Dr. Grey Antharos. Grey is conducting experiments on (not mad scientist style, silly, get your mind out of the FFVII gutter) a member of the Domierni race, a small pocket of humanity that branched out eons ago. Christophe is troubled by the experiments, not understanding the point, but all that becomes irrelevant when the subject bursts into the room and obliterates Grey with her kickass magic. Claiming that Christophe is innocent, she leaves him there, terrified and determined to end the project forever.
Two years later........
Christophe has found a reasonably isolated home in the mountain village of Talreye Springs. He leads a fairly comfortable life of drinking, cursing, and avoiding decent employment at all costs. His tranquil existence is shattered forever when the unthinkable occurs......
......the bartender refuses to serve him anything but water until he pays his tab of 500 Argenti.
Dismayed and disheartened, Christophe completes a dangerous quest to retrieve Final Fantasy VII: the Novel from the hands of a nefarious book thief. His efforts prove useless, however, and he must return to the bar empty-handed.
He returns to the bar to find a young man performig tricks with black magic in order to get free food. Before Christophe can confront the offender, the boy suddenly freezes and speaks of things he couldn't possibly know, shreds of Christophe's well-hidden past. When he finishes, his powers suddenly explode, injuring the people he had been performing for. Christophe grabs him and runs from the angry crowd. Inroducing himself as Caolan Ravendi, the boy joins Christophe and will lead him on a dark and scary RPG type journey.......
Well. There's the long melodramatic summary. The demo included more than this, and will be out...... I dunno when. I do need, if you are intrigued and would like to help, some custom sprites (cuz I can't do wings), theme music for the game and the characters, and most of all, a title and game over screen. Hope you're interested in ES, screens coming when I find my jump drive and am done graduating and crap. :D
-
Given that the screens that were here were all of stuff that's been changed, here are some from new maps.

Christophe standing near the Talreye tavern, his favorite spot in the town he's lived in since the incident

Christophe in a bar in Huinn, where the drinking game takes place

Caolan enjoys setting bosses on fire!

Arin displaying his creepier side in Marionna's castle.
-
^Very good actually. Yes, those chipsets are overused, but you seem to handle them well. Overall, the graphics are looking good, even though they're not the most important in a rpgmaker game.
As for the story... Well, I'll admit I'm lazy and haven't read it all yet, but after I do I'll give more input.

With the faces... Try this:
Before Resizing, change the background color of the faces to the backround of your messages (from the system image) which i think is black (might be another shade of it for all I know). That way, it gets rid of the other color surrounding the faces.
-
The screenshots look good except for one- The wintery forest.
The leafy canopy parts are curving in on themselves and the raised area above the wall flows directly into the part of the map that isn't raised, so it's very difficult to figure out what's supposed to be on that "hill" and what's not.
Aside from that, it's looking very spiffy.
Nice game name, by the way.
-
lol Good eye barnsy...
Yeah, The Cliff Defies the laws of physics.
Anyway, These are alright screens, Can't wait for the battle screens.
-
The maps are fair, although a lot of that it down to the excellent chipsets rather than how the map's been made.
No point being a perfectionist though- if you make maps like those then the game will look reasonably good and you might actually have time to finish the thing :p
-
I'm in the process of what I like to call the massive overhaul of death.... the forest is most certainly one of the older ones that needs to be fixed. I went through one of my cities and realized that the door took up like half of the house.... ^^
Thanks for the feedback, it's muchly appreciated. I was wondering how to kill that icky border around the Christophe there.
The goal for Ember Sky is to be very dark, but it also has a lot of humor and wackiness and such. Like me, I guess....
-
Hehehe, I let a complete stranger play a not-complete demo, complete with glitches from the system switch (on the first boss battle, the game crashed cuz it was missing a background...... and I had to re-import all my chipsets because many of them were in my extended RTP thing..... and battle animations would randomly explode....... ^^)
I'm working on battlechars now for Caolan. Also, two characters that weren't going to be in the demo but are in now:
Athair "Flameheart" Elseth (also Lyra's last name)
Age: 30
Weapon: Either a red sword or a red axe..... he loves red.... ^^
Skill: Flameheart (fire elemental sword attacks. more powerful than Caolan's magic)
As noted in Lyra's profile, Athair is one of the most powerful forces at the royal family's disposal. Although he has every right to be badass, he is an intensely laidback and cheerful guy. He and Lyra disagree on many points, including loyalty and the role of one in their position. He and Christophe become friends quickly, but Athair is only a temporary member of your party. Yes, he pulls a Beatrix. Arin and Athair are extremely close and rarely carry out a mission while separated.
Arin "the Shadowblade"
Age: 24
Weapon: Rapier
Skill: Either Chaos, Shadowblade, or something else..... (dark-elemental magic, which Caolan cannot learn because he's a lameass)
Arin is the youngest of the elite officers, and also the most eccentric. He is softspoken most of the time, but he has a very short temper when it comes to disrespect (for example, he puts Caolan in prison for mouthing off). Because he is as young as he is, the public has a mixed opinion of him, but he doesn't care all that much. Despite their initial squabbles, Arin eventually styles himself as Caolan's protector. He prefers not to reveal his last name to anyone.
Other notes:
Fixed up the Talreye Wood sequence. Screens coming soon.
Looking for battle bg's in complete resources. Is there a way, without a custom battle system, to make it look like there's no background and you're just where you are on the map?
Planned minigames/sidequests:
Shooting game (kinda like the Gunner's Gauntlet in X-2, except not as X-2), may be in the demo
Blackjack, definitely in the demo
Drinking contest, probably in the demo (will need spriting help for this, though)
Travels of Monterey sidequest (sorta complicated), definitely in the demo (at least the beginning is.... it's long as all hell)
Missing kitty mini-sidequest, definitely in the demo
Also, before you say I went character-crazy, only Christophe and Caolan are playable in the demo. The others just appear in the story.
-
Yeeeeeaaaahhhhhh..........
Just finished Caolan's battlechar last night, yay. So here are some shots from a boss battle....

Christophe shoots the wolfie!

Caolan wonders what to do......

He decides to set the wolfie on fire.
I'm going to change the battle backgrounds to something other than RTP, but right now the maps are the #1 priority. I've been snooping around, checking out better games, and getting ideas for map techniques. Mwahahahaha.........

[STRIKE]3[/STRIKE]5 things
- Wonders what to do, sets the wolfie on fire.. XD!
- I WANT THAT MONSTER!!!!
- I WANT THAT ANIMATION!!!!
- I wanna play a demo. :(
- GOOD LUCK CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT TUTORIAL MAKER! I will be paying attention to the storyline and character development. lol.
-
The fire animation? Got that here, dude. *grin* *loves complete resources*
As for the wolfie..... might be from Crankeye...... dunno.
I pride myself in giving early impressions of my characters, then having them blow up in your face.
The demo is so close to done it hurts. It's like an almost-done-gasm.
-
I know this is a double post...... but I thought you all should know. I grad-jee-ate (say it with me! grad..... jeeee----- aaaaaaaaaate) next week, so I'll be busy, but......
The projected release date of Ember Sky's demo is June 16th. I'll try to stick to that, but......
My to-do list:
-New battle backgrounds
-Huinn interiors (I'm better with interiors, so this'll
-Map touchup for Talreye Wood
-Sprite touchup on Arin (changed his haircolor)
-Some minor cutscene work
Ha..... I can do that in two weeks.
-
Let me guess...this is being made with RPG maker, or something else?
-
hmm you use sprite sized battlers... I dont know. I use tales style battlers can you do those? Sorry for off topic but... damn! Now everyone will be up set with me!!
Anyways... you do good maps. I am not good at all with environments. I do better with dungeon design I plan to do a dungeon with rising and lowering water levels. We all know how eveyone likes water levels! eheh heh heh!
By the way I want your chips! Oh to do that thing where you want to have a battle background where you are on the map you'll need screen shots for every part of the map. Too tedious i'd say.
You'll also have to deal with frames and paralux backgrounds. I did a battle background with a scrolling backdrop. I still have it but it is in two pieces so no one can have it.
-
Sprites are easier to make, since I can just copy and paste, then edit. Good stuff.
Just....... PLEASE don't OT in my game thread. PM me about the thing you wanted done, silly billy.

Go RM2k3! :)
I so can't wait Phayre for the demo! (I can spell Phayre without looking now, Yay!)

I do this now too. Its so easy! I actually made one recently... But it was from a FSM charset...
EDIT: I can't find the wolf... oh well.
-
Yeah..... I'm excited too. Except life got busier than expected, and then I was like, Oh ****, my facesets aren't done! Oh ****, my sprites aren't done! Oh ****, Caolan's dialogue is buggy! Oh ****, my maps are yucky! DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT...........
But uh, yeah. I'll try and get it out by my self-imposed deadline.
*is happy that people care about silly rpgmaker game*
SQUEE.
-
So..... I've grad-jee-ay-ted.
That means more time for ES. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay.......
However..... my jumpdrive is still missing. Ah well.
Initially ES was going to have your typical world map setup. I changed my mind. World maps aren't fun. I decided to rehaul and lengthen Talreye Wood (the snow forest) and delete the world map. Instead, I'll be using a system like FFX's. Yaaaaaay FFX!!!!!
Oh, and I may or may not take out chests. I dunno. Chests are tedious to make, and really, who leaves treasure chests lying around dungeons, anyway? Jeez. "I know, let's leave a Potion here in this pretty chest so maybe some intrepid hero man will come along and utilize it! Ha!"
Errrrr..... no.
Input on both of these decisions would be helpful.
If all goes well, Ember SKy's rather short demo will be released on Saturday. Three cheers for Phayre! Hip hip hooray!
-

Errrrr..... no.
XD!
...I never thought of that. I think now, the only time I'll have a chest, is if you need it to complete the dungeon...
-
All right, guys. Due to some setbacks, Ember Sky's demo is not going to be out for a while. The earliest is probably the end of the month. I certainly hope you weren't desperately looking forward to Saturday for the demo of an RM2K3 game.... were you?
But no, I have some major pain in the *** spriting to do, and battle char tweaks, and all that. Mapping is about 70% complete. Music..... errrr...... essentially just some stuff by Vidian and the other prominent midi makers around here. Assistance with themes would be helpful, if you have some free time. Also, thanks to a little misunderstanding, I don't have a half-decent system 2 to work with. I've yet to find one that works nicely with my black system. *spaz*
In addition to all this, I (being a writer first and foremost) have finally broken a year-long writer's block. Thus, I'm gonna be writing more and programming less.
Anyway. If you were adamant about playing the demo at the end of the week..... sucks for you, get a life. No, just kidding. I have no life. Just wait a little longer so it's not rushed and ugly.
Overall progress:
Maps: 75%
Spriting: 60%
Music: Technically I have something for every place, but I have a lame main theme and no character themes. Boo hiss.
Graphics (title, game over, etc.): 70% (I made the title! Yay!)
Yeah, I definitely thought I could work faster than I can. Sorry.
-
End of the month? yay! I should be back from Europe by then! I was just hoping for a demo. Oh well. Feel free to use any of my midis, but, i don't know if they'd work. Any, good luck on the game.
-
Take your time, better to have a decent demo that took a couple more weeks to come out than a rushed demo. It's not like my life depends on it.
I think you've managed to build a good amount of hype among the community with this game, better make sure the demo is really well polished and lives up to it's hype, right?
-
Hope so. I wasn't aware there was hype going around. Other than this topic I guess. But anyway. I really don't want to do the sprites right now..... so until I feel like it I guess. ^^
-
Yes, there are two demos I wanna try, yours and that Mario game! Yours of course it higher on my things I wish to play.
We all get a bit hyped up when there's a demo involved.
-
.....*dramatic bow*
....*hand everyone currently at thread a vanilla coke and a big stack of peanut butter cookies*
Go eat the tasties while I work. *watches as AFL tentatively reaches out, then snatches cookie and soda and scurries away into the shadows*
-
Mm... cookie...
-
Mmmm, vanilla coke... Wait, I don't like vanilla coke. IT'S A TRAP!
-
......You're all spazzes. All of you. *hands GM another coke, watches as he drinks, remembers he doesn't like it, spits it out, repeats* Hehehehe...... the simple pleasures in life........
Anyway. The planned length of the demo goes kinda like this:
1. You start in Talreye, Christophe wants beer. Sidequest ensues.
2. Done with sidequest, oh look, still no beer. Damn.
3. Hey, a party member. We should leave town.
4. Oh look, a 4-screen long (or something like that) pretty forest sequence. Yay.
5. Oh look, a one room cave with a boss. Crap.
6. You get to Huinn, a busy trade ton. You can poke around, but once you prompt the storyline enough, the demo is over.
I don't know if this is an appropriate length for a demo. More needed? Less? I could cut out Huinn, but then there's little real story teaser. It would be done, though. Done like now. I'd appreciate input on this especially.
-
NO! WORK ON IT! THEN I'LL HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN I COME BACK.
-
....*pats AFL on the head*
You're such a good little spaz.
-
Sounds good, the only problem is... the party goes from town-forest-cave-boss fight-another town. It's just so overused. Meh, as long as the story is interesting, and the maps are well made.
-
I guess that's how RPGS work. Oh look, a town. Forest, cave, forest, cave. Oh look, a town. Wicked long cave. Oh look..... a town.
-

JRPGs. Usually, a true RPG has no pattern in where you go. You just go, and wherever you end up, there's bound to be some adventure, ranging from anything from giant rats in the cellar, to recovering treasure from the cave.
-
Another pattern that annoys me is Town-Dungeon-Boss Fight. Not only do I think it's annoying to have a boss fight in every piece of the game that has random encounters, but most of the time they aren't even well made.
But that has nothing to do with your game I guess. Just try to add little twists to your forests/dungeons. Instead of a simple forest, why not a forest inhabited by cannibals? Instead of a mushy old cave, how about a fire/ice cave? Wait, that's cliche as well. Ok I admit, mushy old caves are pretty much twist-proof.
Just some general tips.
Mmmm, vanilla coke... Wait, I don't like vanilla coke. IT'S A TRAP!
-
The main twists are realy just the interactions you have with your characters the first time through places. Like, you take Caolan with you through the forest. He's a spaz. He's all like: "Christophe! Check out this tree! WOW!" and Christophe's all like "I have a gun..... why haven't I shot you?" Caolan also tries to make friends with your giant wolfie boss.... before it decides that it it would be more fun to eat him.
When I say RPGs, I mean the typical video game RPGS, not the old school Dungeons and Dragons, or MMOs. There will probably always be something to do in a town, like a fun minigame or whatever.
.....*hands GM yet another coke...... giggle*
-
Read most of the stuff and I like what I see. And what I see is that you have a great cast of characters so far. Not too much cliche in them (cause all characters have some, no matter how good you are), and they seem likeable. Your screens are pretty solid, and from what I can tell, you're a good writer. As long as you stick with it, I'll check this out and keep tabs on it. I'm here if you need help at all, but good luck. Us RPG'ers need to stick together. ^^'

In that case, I think it will work better. You've proved you're great at writing, so this should be entertaining. As long as there's good dialogue, it can't get boring.
Most of the fun in rpgm games come from the story anyway.
-
When exactly did I prove this great writerness? Please tell Mr. Donald Maas, the agent who won't take my novel no matter how many times I revise it, that I'm good. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
No, seriously, thanks guys. I'm currently working on sprites, having finally finished my maps. I think. Maybe. *glances around* Maybe. I'm trying to do a sprite with Christophe drinking, that's not coming out well. I've also found that I can't figure out Lyra's sprite. Her hair throws me off, cuz I've never done anything long. Same with Grey..... damn it!!!!!!! *throws something big and hard*
-
I noticed that almost no one really commented on your storyline. After sitting down to read everything, I have to say that it sounds fantastic. Your characters have well thought out personalities, even if they have a wierd "Silent Hill" style vibe to them. You've got a nice introduction, clear motives, and smooth transitions between what happens next.
The only thing I didn't like was the book part. You say that Christophes debts are stacking up, then he leaves to chase someone who stole his book, then he comes back to the bar to first meet Caloan. Did Caolan steal the book or something? It didn't really say. Other than, you're game doesn't have the epic vibe some of the other games here have, but this can change once you release a demo.
I just wanted to say that I am really looking forward to this, and that I will download it when it comes out. Do you need any help on finding poses? I'm very good at posing, and if you need a lot of detailed charasets I know where to get some. If you're interested, PM me about it but don't ask for too much.
-
Caolan is sort of hanging out at the bar, showing off his ill magic skillz and conning people into buying him food. When you come back to the bar to tell the bartender that the job she told you about was a bust, an incident is sparked between Caolan and Christophe, leading to you leaving town.
As for epicness, the planned storyline is sufficiently epic, but Christophe remains very oriented on his own goals throughout the entire game. I really hate the heroes who are like "I don't care, unless of course it's the end of the game, my life is in mortal danger, and the world needs saving!" Gah. And yeah, Christophe ends up caring about more than just beer. ^^

But I talked more about the plot than the characters though. :sweet:
To stay on topic, I responded to your message Phayre. Just send over the charasets and I'll see what I can do tonight.
-
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Time to make a drinking game! Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Today, I rehauled the opening cutscene so it makes more sense and isn't buggy. I also finished the charsets for Lyra and Arin, and edited the facesets so they don't have the border around them. So far, out of the really important chars, only young Christophe, Grey, and Athair have generated charsets, which were what I was originally using before deciding to sprite some myself.
Oh, and a minor change. Arin is only 22, not 24. His crazy abilities are explained in the storyline, so don't worry about the weirdness of someone so young being so skilled.
-
It's Past june 16th...
Wheres the Demo, Miss?
-
It was postponed, due to some finals that my teachers threw at me and some major bugs I missed, as well as some complete scene rehauls due to bad music, weird lookin' sprites, and the switch from 2k to 2k3. Earliest release will be the end of the month, depending on how quickly I finish the blackjack cards.
But yeah, I'm a bad person. Should've given more time.
-
Can I test your demo for bugs and other things? Please? Please?!?!?!?!! I need an excuse not to do stuff with my game.
-
Right now, due to a major error with variables, it's unplayable at parts. You get hopelessly stuck. And it's Caolan's fault. There are a few interesting event bugs where Caolan will be in two places at once, one version of him always walking through you. It's odd. If you're willing to deal with this, I'll send you a PM, AFL.
In Progress:
Blackjack cards: 20% done
Blackjack game: 0% (but I have a tutorial, so it'll be easy)
Enemies: 90% (the system switch destroyed all the custom moves)
Battle animations: 80%
Cutscenes: 80% (just 2 more! and one quick dialogue)
Maps: 90%
Drinking game: 10% (I have the sprites, just need to do the programming)
I may end up saving the card pics for the full game and just giving you numbers, because I want the demo out, and in order to complete the cards I need to do an FE face for each char. Why? Uhhh.... I'm not sure. But it'll be cool, cuz you'll go back and be like "Oh! That's Caolan! And there's Arin! Wow, I know these people know!", since when you first play, you only have Christophe. But.... yeah.
This, folks, it what happens when your process involves no planning. For some reason, it works for me (I've written a novel off this no-plan formula, since it jkeeps me from thinking too far ahead and getting bored). You think you're done... and then, no, wait, wouldn't that be cool? Yeah! That'd be cool! Wheeee......

Eagerly waits at pm. (Or just goes to pm box)

I'm Studying to do Music for movies,
If you send me your project I could Compose Original music
for the Parts you need?
-
I'm late to the ES thread. Damn, lots to comment on. Um, lesse most important:
1: If you need story help, you know who to call.
2: Sounds cool, although not my usual gaming selection. I'll play the demo when it's up, though, and maybe offer a few suggestions. Also, the Christophe/Caolan interactions sound good.
3: Numbers rock!! :Plight:
Okay, that's all for now. I gotta get back to my game.
-
sounds and looks good its good that ur doing ur own sprites not many people do that yeah keep it up and youll get there.
-
Only the main chars are custom. Everything else is RTP, mostly, because I'm a bad person like that.
Latest development decision: The demo with feature a very simple black jack game. No pictures, because I just want the thing out. It will feature the more elaborate drinking game.

Yay drinking games are fun

Heres the thing. the other part is how to use it.
BTW, everyone, the demo's great. Well, I think it is anyway.
-
GAH! You told them of its existence! I'll never hear the end of it! ANGST!!!!
but yeah. You haven't even gotten the good part.
Thanks a bunch, hopefully these with help the waterfalls. I'll have to recolor it so it looks right with the snow though.
-
Thats right, I forgot it was snow.
Eh, they could of figured it out by this:

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't tell!!!!!!
Oh, wait, no, I had an actual update.
Today's task is the drinking game. And possibly the final 2--3 cutscenes. Maybe. If I can get that done, there's only some relatively minor tweaking until the demo's done.
You'll know it's done, because I'll change the topic title.
-
The forest looks great btw.
-
Almost done.
This time I mean it.
Release date: July 14
-
yay ill mark that date down
-
well, 3 More days until the release date,
You should know by now whether your going to make it on time or not by now.
Which is it?
-
Yes Phayre. I wanna play the mini games... i haven't played those yet.
_ _
_
I can't wait. Then me keeping all those image files won't have been just a waste of filespace. :)
-
It will be ready.
Hoorah, hoorah.
-
I can't wait to ply a demo.
I'm making my own RPG right now,
and I would like to take a break and play
someone elses.
seems fun.
well keep it up! :frag:
-
Just so you know....
Blackjack has turned out buggier than expected, and is not done. Yet. The drinking game has not been cut, but it has beenmodified to pure button mashing. At a later date, I might rehaul it to live up to its original idea, or use that in a different minigame.
My thoughts? Forget Harry Potter. Mark your calenders for ES. *cackle*
-
Demo link is in first post. Hoorah!
-
I get an error when I go to battle.
I need forest2 D:
-
I think you have the wrong RTP. I can play this no problem.
-
You need 2k3's RTP.
Try that, but if you already have it or try and it doesn't work, I'll send you the missing file.
-
I haven't been keeping up with this 0_o
I'll download it when I can ^.^
-
YAY! I WANNA PLAY THE DRINKING GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have the files...
Oh and...

You must be using another translation. The rtp in different translations have different names. (Looks at another computer i use with another translation on it) i found that out the hard way. Heh.
EDIT 1:Just finished downloading, btw
EDIT 2: DAMMIT. I should have realized I was so close to the end of that demo.
The dream was so funny. I saw one error with the position of the one message, but so far so good. Now I have to travel back to the bar to play that mini-game!!!!!
EDIT 3: Where is it? I can't find it. :( Ah, well, the demo was fun none the less.
-
AH now I remember. I uninstalled 2k3 a few days ago cause of errors... Darn it.
-
Talk to the man sitting in the bar, and the drinking game will automatically start. It's different, though, just the button masher, as has been noted.
-
I went to the wrong bar. :/
-
Are there any more bugs that people have noticed, before I re-upload? I'll also be posting new screens, and some more storyline stuff. Arthei is currently under construction, hoorah. And I need NPCs. You can also be one of the kingdom's Elite, if you like. There are 10 of those, I think. POP! End update.
-
News.
I will, sometime soon, be releasing a new demo. After working on the castle, I've realized that yes, I can make decent maps. And the ones I have.... suck. So on the new demo, the maps will have been rehauled, again. The new demo will also be longer, and not just "Oh, lookie, town! Oh lookie, forest! Oh lookie, town! Oh lookie, end!" Feel free to download the current demo, but the old one won't be released on any other forums or anything. Suggestions on specific maps and input on the story so far are greatly appreciated.
-
I think your game's dialogue is a little fast paced. I ended up skipping a few pages when I first played it.
I appreciate how you never stop the dialouge or play it automatically, but I'd like it if you slow down the text speed by one.
-
Yes, I'll do that. I'll probably bulk up on the cutscenes, too. They seem rather skimpy at times.
-
---Late comment:
Skimpy...? Like short? or just like... not enough information in them?
...nevermind.
-
As in Christophe running around in a string bikini. What do you think? *smack*
No, they just seems really short and lacking in substance.
-
lol. ...that somehow wouldn't surprise me if it was Caolan...
-
Oh, that's scarring. I never thought of Caolan as the "I could see him happily crossdressing" type.... o.o Maybe Arin, though.
AHEM! CHANGING THE TOPIC...
Ember Sky still needs some NPCs; there are plenty of spaces left. the castle is about 90% done, so GET ON IT! Ha, just kidding. As always, still need suggestions, comments, and no, old poorly done screenshots and "witty commentary" don't count. *eyeroll*
-
Ok, so I'm a bit late, but I just downloaded the demo, which I'll play at some point. I just wanted to mention that I LOVE the music that you're using for the title screen. I taught myself how to play it on the piano a while back. :p
-
Yes, that is why I love AFL here. *glomps*
Wait... you did write that, right? *stuffs head in project folder* Hmm. Why can't I remember this stuff?
-
...read the complete resource description better. _sweat_
Anyway...

Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable demo. Sure there were some problems and such throughout (mostly with mapping and sometimes with events), but there was nothing too major that hindered the gameplay. What I liked about it was that it kept moving. I didn't have to sit and wait forever for anything. The dialog was to the point and the battles were quick and easy. However, this did end up making it pretty short, so I'm hoping you plan on having the full version be around 100 times as long as that demo.
I'm assuming the battles were so easy because it was the beginning of the game. I was glad about that because I don't think anything should really be challenging in the very beginning. The boss, though it was rather simple and practical, worked because you somehow made it one of those things that you can just win but not by much, so it keeps you interested, so good job with that.
Now that I'm done with all those things that I liked, here are some non-mapping-related little things that bothered me a bit. First of all, he acts as though being in debt 500 Argent is a big deal, when you can go into the forest and get that from battling for about 5 minutes. I tried going back to the pub to see if you threw in something where you could pay back, but as I expected, you couldn't. I suggest having the beginning monsters (or any monsters maybe) not give you any money to avoid this. Another thing that irked me a bit was how Caolin could focus outside of battle. This made it extremely easy to deal with magic loss, and though it worked well for this demo, I don't think it would work for the whole game. One last problem was your eventing (I know this could be considered slightly mapping-related, but I don't really think so). It seemed rather thrown together. For instance, when you walk through a door, you arrive on the other side facing the same direction no matter what, even when you should be facing a different direction. To avoid this, I suggest always setting the direction for teleporting, except when it is absolutely necessary to face the same direction. Some other event-related things could be touched up too, such as using more animations and not just having things appear (doors should open and close and Caolin could appear with some effect, whether it be a screenfade or simply walking out of Christophe Final Fantasy style).
Mapping is a whole different issue. I won't go into detail because there are so many things you could work on, like making things more rounded and using all tiles correctly. I suggest you look up some mapping tutorials or stuff. The maps weren't bad really, they just too often had obvious errors.
Other than that, I have no complaints. I don't think I know enough about the story to judge it, and I'm interested in knowing what happens so that's good; the music was all fine and every MIDI fit in well; and the sprites were nice. Overall, I'll say 7/10 for this demo, which I hope you don't consider a bad score. Fixing all of those little annoying things will go a long way. It could easily raise the demo score to a 8.5 or higher IMO. I wouldn't bother rereleasing this demo though (you probably wouldn't anyway). Just fix those things up for next time. Good luck and keep it up! :)
-
Ah yes! My first real review!
Most of the problems, I'm glad to say, are already fixed. And the real demo is a good deal longer. So.... play this demo, and the new one will be out fairly soon. Maybe with a new style of battlechars, definitely rehauled maps (less Mac and Blue, I promise), and more gameplay, including more of ES's storyline. PM me if you're interested in helping out, beta testing, whatever.
