Title: PhoenixBlade: An experiment
Post by: WarxePB on April 30, 2007, 12:32:09 PM
And so it begins. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/odinthegreat1/comix/phoenixblade1.swf)

I've had a concept like this for a long time. It seems to be a basic webcomic in Flash, but as the description states, there's a twist: YOU decide the plot!
I have an idea for a general plot, which I'll be more or less keeping to, but the people who post in the thread will determine the strip-to-strip dialogue, characters and whatnot. This serves two purposes; I'll never run out of ideas, and you guys can see your ideas realized in comic form.

PhoenixBlade (the title of the comic) will probably alternate between sprite comics and Flash animations. Sprites for jokes and dialogue, animated for fights or longer strips. Of course, you will be indirectly determining that too.

Hopefully this works out as I'm imagining it to. I'm going to do the first few strips on my own, then I'll start accepting ideas. Expect to see a new one every couple of days or so.

Who taught you flash?

No offense, but smack them in the face. That whole flippy effect is what happens when a tween doesn't work right.

Concept is cool as hell, the flash work behind it could use some work. But practice and you'll be fine. :)

PS: Didn't read about the sprite part. I'd suggest using sprites in flash to animate them. That would be badass. :D

I know the shape tweens look pretty bad, but I was just experimenting with them. I'll probably just draw a bunch of custom sprites in the next few days, then use those instead of tweens. And for the record, I learned tweens with the basic tutorials that came with Flash.

As for the sprites, I'm probably going to use the style I have now - the Flash sprites are just traced from my edited Warxe spritesheet. I find that Flash images are easier to edit and detail than sprites (for me, at least), so I don't think I'll be changing the style anytime soon (unless everyone strongly opposes it).

Oh Warxe, I've missed your various animations and comics. And now you've combined both!

Also, regarding the turning left to right motion tween problem, you could always just flip it and not tween it.
It might be incredibly cheap but it can be pulled off and labelled as "animating style"

or you could just flip the head instead.

That is an AWESOME idea. I can't believe I didn't think of it, considering I've devoted most of my spare time lately to Super PM.

Insert self-referential joke here. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/odinthegreat1/comix/phoenixblade2.swf)

I have a strange sense of humour, so don't expect to laugh at all of my comics. If you do, good for you.

This animation came to me as I was animating the flipping pose. So it's nothing more than filler (already... I know I'm bad), but once the next comic is done, you guys can start giving me ideas for comics. Actually, you could do that now, if you want to.

Also, if I can keep this going for a decent time, expect to see some Z Vs W stuff.

I note you picked up on which side the eyepatch thing is on. Good job.

Also, make a character for Lucas and kill him.

Not bad. My first animations in Flash were much worse than this, and the jokes you have so far are alright! Second... Well, now I know you've played CIV IV. (See attachment.)

Heh, not bad for a filler. The big-*** hammer reminded me of Monthy Piton and their huge feet.

This seems interesting enough, I'll check it once in a while.

Bluhman: I've been doing Flash animating for a couple of years now, but mostly with sprites. So I'd hope that it's better than your first attempts.

For drawing, I suggest you use the trick where you use the straight line tool and then bend the line with the black pointer tool - it makes drawing stuff way easier.

And there was light. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/odinthegreat1/comix/phoenixblade3.swf)

Just out of curiosity, was that too obvious?

EDIT: Please excuse the lack of a special-effects budget. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/odinthegreat1/comix/phoenixblade4.png)

Well, I was expecting "light" but no, you had to go BLOW UP THE UNIVERSE (big bang style).

I like where you're going with this.

Hehe awsome, but the sprite one would look better if it was animated with unfreeze or something, that is the best when it comes to people getting killed, just my oppinion though.

I love all the ones done in flash.
