Title: Lake of destiny
Post by: Noobpwner on June 01, 2007, 05:55:31 AM
Well I remember trying to make this game along time ago and I kinda screwed up like I always do so I decided to try again, Start fresh, With the same plot but I will probably change it a lot.

Eric
age: 26
genre:male
story
He was born in the city of Cram where he grew up and went to university. At the age of 23 he graduated from university and had a bachelors degree in medicine. After 4 years of working he was unhappy with his life and decided to take his savings and escape to a small lake his friend told him about, where everyone was friends and the work wasn't hard. Thats where the story really starts...

Grandpa
age:95
genre: male
story
Eric's Grandfather,  He dies when you go back to Pine cone lake.

Leanne
age:25
genre: female
story
She is Eric's old friend whom he met while visiting his grandpa at pine cone lake, They were best friends.

Eric is a ordinary guy with ordinary problems his boss is a jackass his girlfriend left him because hes boring, he hates his job, You about get the point his life is sucking
and hes a loser.  He remembers the days from his childhood when everything was good how he use to go with his grandpa to the lake and play in the water.... So about a week later Eric's walking to work when some punks jump him and steal all his stuff, In turn this makes him late for work,  He gets fired and cant pay his rent. So when he gets a phone call about two days before his rent is due from one of his old friends from the lake asking him to come visit he gets on the first bus to pine cone lake.
When he arrives Leanne Informs him that his grandfather has died, and left his cabin and all worldly belongings to Eric.  So once again Eric can relive his childhood memories swimming in the lake having fun with Leanne Ghost stories... He even got another Job.  Until he decided to ask himself why everything was so perfect and why no one can go in the forest....

Ive decided to make it so you can NOT I repeat can NOT name the character

Well, the plot is mysterious alright, but not very well developed. In my opinion, you need to add more detail on what exactly has happened. Some screens and more information about the game itself would help too.
Title: 2 Screens
Post by: Noobpwner on June 02, 2007, 09:41:36 PM
I got 2 Screens of the maps I have done so far.  I wil add more about the story in Awhile because I am working on it at the moment.

Screen 1
The pond/Lake

Screen 2
The forest

Gragh, your maps are so... square, if you know what I mean. Think about how forests and ponds actually look. Are they always in straight lines? No. Try to get them looking more "organic".

Here's an example based on your first screen. I knocked this up in literally 5 minutes. Notice how I used curves and corner tiles on the trees to make them look natural. Also notice the use of different terrain types. If the player has to walk around boring, artificial looking maps, they'll get bored.

Work on your mapping, and your game will be a whole lot more fun.

I agree with Dragonium, you need to make your forests more antural. For example, on the second screen, it's too blank, try adding different terrains (like grass) and spreading bushes, flowers and branches along the way.

Ok I will edit this post with better mor "organic maps..

Sorry, double post, but I'm too lazy to use photobucket

and no, I'm not pointing to that one bird.

And these are only some of the things I'm seeing.  There wasn't enough room on the image for my writing...

Any questions?

Unless it is something man-made, or unavoidable, try to never put more than 4 of the same tile in a straight line. Autotiles are an exception to that opinion of mine.

Thanks Mies and AFL I will try harder, This quality map making stuff is hard... But It makes it look way better right.

Checklist
No Square
Fill space wisely
No more then 4 of the same tile in a line
less bland and boring

So is that what I need to change?

EDIT:does anyone have a better forest tileset cause theirs not very much for variation on this one

EDIT: Changed the story a bit READ TOP AGAIN I EDITED IT

^Meis actually has a very good mapping tutorial, you should read it.

The good news: once you get the hang of making half-decent maps, it's pretty fast work. Of course, those aren't jaw-dropping OMG this is gorgeous maps, just "Well, that's okay lookin', let's go with it".
The bad news: Once you learn how to make half-decent maps, you feel an odd compulsion to attack every map you've ever made.... ever. At least, if you're as neurotic as I am.
But yeah, read Meis's tutorial. It's good stuff. And it's really not a matter of better chipsets. You can do a lot with what you've got, but.... if you really want something different, just look in the complete resources, silly billy. Search for forest, woods, trees, whatever. Also look for some cool tree charsets.
Ah, and wouldn't med school take longer than what you've given?

Oy... WHY is your hero always facing up in your shots!? I WANT TO SEE HIS FAAAAACCCEEEE!!! AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!

Damnit, it makes me think that he has this hideous face that he must hide in bushes and other random foliage.

And I also think your maps are a bit messy, as opposed to bland now. After finishing a map, just... LOOK at it, and see if it pleases the eye or not. If it doesn't, then you probably aren't using the chipset right, or the chipset you're using is just crap. In this case, it's the way you're using it. Take a while to just look at the maps and see what's not right in them.

Okey well what do you guys think of the revised story?

EDIT: I'm also trying to make my own battle chars but Every time I do my character ends up looking like hes sliding back and forth and it looks hideous heres what I've done...

EDIT: the last ones him jumping so thats normal.  They are small because I wanted to make them sprite size so its easier to edit.

If he's sliding back and forth, you just haven't lined it up properly.
Title:
Post by: Noobpwner on June 03, 2007, 10:26:48 PM
is there anything that can help me line them up?
or does someone have a abs

look for a Battle Chara template in the complete resource section. There's a bunch of them, shouldn't be too hard to find.

Please tell me he's not pissing in the third frame.
Title:
Post by: game_maniac on June 04, 2007, 07:06:40 PM
^Haha, I agree, the effect on the third frame is pretty poor, you should just copy +paste the RTP effect if you can't do better. Or just ask someone for a bit of help.

I like the new story, sounds a lot better and it's not filled with the usual cliches, which is always a plus. That and the fact you listened to advice and tried to improve on your maps shows you're serious about this project, and that's a +1 to respect for you and the game in general.

Now you just need a good name for your game and edit the topic title, because simply "Game" doesn't attract much attention.

Yeah I really didn't notice that until you pointed it out now we know who has the sick mind here ------------>Dragonium<-------------
not to point any arrows...  I'd point my finger but it just wouldn't have the full effect of the arrows...

So I'll work on changing that...
The thing is I wanted it to like look like its starting on fire in the shape of a pentagram...

I used a battle char template...

Meh. Just slide it around until it works. Use IDraw or sommat and make sure the sprites are aligned the same way, same amount of pixels on each side. Yeah, it can be bitchy. Deal with it. Trial and error is the spice of life.....
or was that variety? Yeah it was, I'm making up pseudo-wisdom......
*has sufficiently confused herself*

Just asking again but I have a question what happened to those good abs tutorials that used to be here, but now when I need them the most they ran off to be emo and not help me with my game...  I dont think there's anything wrong with emo's cause people call me emo but really why are the tutorials being bitches and leaving me like this?
Title:
Post by: game_maniac on June 05, 2007, 04:14:51 PM
The tutorials, like many of us, can't stand emos. Or maybe you just haven't tried the search function above?

Hey man I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out...Then I couldn't stop laughing... Until now....

Back to what I was going to say.... I was going to say something about something about my game... Like I wanna make my character dash and I tried using Dragonblazes tut. but It just made me sit in my corner and cry. Or else it made my guy slowwww! So I am gunna try to have this in my game.

Dashing
Night/day
Abs

anything else that might make this game better? I was thinking of making it so your guy could call a taxi from a phone booth or something..

Did you change the hero speed to Move Speed Up or whatever the hell it is....  Move Speed Increase.  That's it.
Title:

yeah but all it did was slow him down
Title: Try This.
Post by: aboutasoandthis on June 06, 2007, 03:04:17 AM
Make two events, on as a "Parallel Process" and the other as a "Action Key." The Action Key Event should have two pages (Or one for every kind of movement you want in your game. It helps to name the Action Key event into something like "Movement."

Parallel Process:
Make the Key Inpute Command to start the running, but instead of "Move Event: Hero: Increase Speed," insert instead "Call Event" instead.

Call Event should have 3 sections:
-Common Event
-Map Event & Page
-Event Referenced from Variables.

Click on the Map Event Section, and select the Action Key Event mentioned above.

Now to set up the running.

Action Key Event: Page 1
Move Event: Hero:
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Up
Speed Up
Speed Up
Speed Up
End Event Processing

This is to make him walk.

Action Key Event: Page 1
Move Event: Hero:
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Down
Speed Up
Speed Up
Speed Up
Speed Up
Speed Up
End Event Processing

This is to make him run.

Every event runs on a speed of 1-8. The hero naturally starts out at 4. This should do it. If it is still not working, try changing the frequency to 5 or 6 in the Move Event section. That's the little top bar with the empty bubbles.

I'm not very good at explaining these kinds of things so if anyone knows what I'm talking about, feel free to add.

If you're capable of making an ABS, I also recommend you try making a simple Custom Menu System using chipsets and events (No pictures required). There's a particular tutorial on Gaming World that explains how to do it.

I used one on my Radiance demo, and it's surprisingly simple to make and edit. Believe me, a bit of work making a CMS chipset is worth it. It'll make your game look a whole lot better, and also give you an infinite amount more freedom to do whatever you want if the Default Menu System can't do it.

http://www.gamingw.net/tutorials/277

Look, I even found you the tutorial. Of course, the good thing about this sort of simple CMS is that you can easily do your own thing and add whatever you like with only simple coding. Give it a shot.

Good luck.
