Title: Bliss, in a tiny shiny handheld pink package.... with a stylus
Post by: Phayre on June 08, 2007, 12:56:16 AM
No, this isn't a friend code thing. I have no wi-fi.
I just wanted to publicly rejoice. Today, from my normally useless brother, I received a DS. Regrettably, it is pink. Thankfully, I can change that with stickers and such. He also gave me his Phoenix Wright game, which I love. However, I own two games currently: the Phoenix Wright game and Fire Emblem for the advance. Any recommendations, especially for good rpgs that aren't cheap Final Fantasy ports? So very sick of Final Fantasy. Also, are there any Castlevania games out for the DS? Is Aria of Sorrow still available anywhere? Is that even the right name, or is it some other amalgamation of angsty nouns?

Dawn of Sorrow is amazing, and a Castlevania game to boot! It's similar to Aria of Sorrow but the variety of weapons and enemies makes it sufficiently different so that nothing feels like "The same old thing," although that's just me and my "I love every Castlevania game with the exception of the 3d ones" speaking.

I have, unfortunately, not been able to get my hands on Portrait of Ruin yet, but that's supposed to be up to quality as well.

I haven't played a lot of DS though, so I can't help you with the RPG request.

Which one?

I'm not sure what to recommend, but I do have both ENG GBA Fire Emblem games, as well as Megaman Battle Network 4 Red Sun, and Megaman Battle Network 5 Doubleteam DS, which has both versions of number 5.

I hear Lunar Knights is a good RPG for the DS, but I've never played it so that's just hearsay.

**** your ****.

I'd suggest Portrait of Ruin, Mario Kart DS, Yoshi's Island DS, Super Princess Peach, New Super Mario Brothers, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby: Squeaq Squad, Tetris DS (mail it to me if you find it), Pokémon Diamond or Pearl, Final Fantasy III, and a few others I don't have yet.

Etrian Odyssey is a great RPG.  It's pretty basic, like Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest. It's also a hard game, so if you want something with difficulty, you'll probably like it. Story is kind of bleh, though.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is a good game too. But I'm not sure how it would be if you haven't played the first game. It's also a short game. :/

Lunar: Dragon Song is a crappy RPG. The way you earn money is done poorly, you lose HP when you run, you can't choose which enemy to attack in battle... pah.

And yeah, Portrait of Ruin is great; so is Dawn of Sorrow. I like Dawn of Sorrow better though.

Metroid Prime: Hunters is alright. I was never really into FPSs though, so if you like them, you'll probably like it more than I did.

Wario Ware: Touched is addicting as hell. I played that game for a long, long time before I pulled myself away. :)

LostMagic is okay, it's a real-time strategy RPG. It's got some difficulty in it, which is pretty nice. Some bosses beat my *** easily, and I'm pretty sure I only beat the final boss by pure luck after 10 or so tries. :p There's a time limit in each battle, but I think time only ran out for me on one certain tough battle. The game gets a bit bland after a while though.

I had lots of fun with Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. You fight tank battles after collecting ammo to fill your tank with, maybe upgrading your tank, and recruiting/choosing teammates. But it's a very easy game unfortunately.

New Super Mario Bros. is fun, but short. Short short short.

Mario Kart last me for quite a while, what with all the stuff to unlock.

To Robotam's glee, I am approximately 2 weeks away from Pokemens Diamond.

Yay for money!

Meh, I played my brother's copy og Diamond for a while. It gives me migraines, so it's a no-go. *pulls out Red and Blue* But I'm all set in the Pokemon department.
I'm gonna get a job at DQ, so affording some of these things won't just be left to "Mommy give me money! Wah!", which is what happens when you're not allowed to get a job over the school year.
Is this FFIII as in VI, cuz I'm playing that already elsewhere. Don't want to start over. Bah.
My brother has Mario Kart, so we play two player often. *grin* I still have my N64 copy, so I'm not keen on a smaller screen and weird graphics.
I take it I'll have to attack Game Universe (the store with all the rare games that wants me to pay like $60 for FFVII and keeps trying to make me, despite the fact that I own a copy) for Aria of Sorrow...... totally not worth it. I'll find Portrait or sommat elsewhere. Especially since going into GU always means atching me get upset about their constant lack of Tales of Destiny. Damn them.'
Oh, and my FE cart just says "Fire Emblem". It's the one with Eliwood, Lyn, and Hector as your main three.
Title:
Post by: Prpl_Mage on June 08, 2007, 01:07:15 PM
It´s FFIII as in the third game in Japan, the one the rest of the world never got.  The one with four heroes a princess and all the Final Fantasy clichés.
And the Fire Emblem game is the seventh, Fire Emblem Rekka nu ka or something, because it was the first fire emblem released outside Japan it never got the title that means sacred sword or something.

And I´ve heard some good stuff about Children of Mana, Metroid and of course the Kirby. You  might want to check them out.

And just so you know, I would kill for a Pokemon Dia/Pea right now, it´s getting closer and closer to our yearly caravan vacation and I really need something to entertain myself with, Pokemon got loads of extra contents and stuff to do... Perfect for wasting time with.
Another note, we get the two of them in stores the 27th July.
How hard can it be? There is no difference between the American and Europian DS is it?

You hate everything I love and love everything I hate, so I have no real suggestions.

All I have is Final Fantasy III (as mentioned above ^), and now New Super Mario Bros.

I'm mostle waiting for FFXII: Revenant Wings, FFTA2: The Sealed Grimore, and ASH: Archaeic Sealed Heat. I don't really play classic RPGs. All I seem to play is Final Fantasy. I also wanna check out Mistwalker since they seem to be stealing EVERY GOOD PRODUCER FROM FINAL FANTASY. The've even stolen my Matsuno.  :(

Isn't the new XII for the PSP? Meh. If Square can't get spinoffs of decent games right (VII compendium, X-2, Chrono Cross [in my humble but right opinion]), how are they gonna pull off a spinoff of a not-so-stellar-game like XII?
Also, thank you all for not saying "OMG go get Chain of Memories for the Advance it r0><0rs!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!"
Not that I hate KH or anything.

From what I know, The PSP Game your are talking about is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War. It is a remake of Final Fantasy Tactics for the Playstation. It will feature a re-translation by Alexander O. Smith (Final Fantasy 9, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy 12), a slightly enhanced musical score, new CGI Cutscenes with good voice acting, and cameo appearances from Cloud, Baltier, and this new character Lando/Lanso from Tactics Advance 2.

The DS games are Revanant Wings, and The Sealed Grimore. RV is a real-time strategy game that uses FF12's Gambit sytsem. It takes place after 12 when Vaan becomes a pirate. Tactics Advance 2 is a sequal to Tactics Advance.

For the record, I loved 12, 10-2, 9, 7, 1-6, and Tactics. I'm also a Matsuno fanboy in addition to Final Fantasy. I thought Kingdom Hearts 1 was a masterpiece, CoM was great, and that 2 was cool but dissapointing. I also have a hate for FF8, FF10, and _____of_____. :P

FF3 isn't a port <.< go buy it, I lub it if you're not that big of turn table battle system stay clear away from it.
It's a fun as hell game.
I know a lot of Final Fantasy haters won't touch because it says Final Fantasy on it but I bet if they named it something like.
"Sword of "'something'" or something gay like that they would love the game.

The Yugioh card game was pretty damn good unlike that first one they put out on the DS it has no story plot at all.

I know you're waiting for Smash Bros, riiight? =D
Imma kick *** you guy's butts that gets it.

and whats wrong with a Pink Ds? My DS is Pink... -.-

(PS: FF8 did suck and Square should shoot themselves for all the hype that game got for the longest it was the highest selling Final Fantasy I don't know if it still is though..)

Post by: Archem on June 08, 2007, 06:04:08 PM
I never could get into FFVIII. It felt too much like you were just mercs doing **** for other people, and the battles made it feel like some hokey "get it with a Happy Meal™" game. Battles always seemed to end up being spam the hell out of your summons because there was no magic meters or anything.

I'm waiting for a DS Smash Bros. They have everything necessary to make it as good as Melee, minus graphics, of course.

Don't recall who said it, but Mario Kart DS doesn't have "goofy graphics", it's called "3D". :p

Can't wait for FFTA2, don't want to bother with the FFT remake, because that means dropping cash on a PSP to play a game I already own. FFIII rules, and I believe they're remaking FFIV for the DS, too. I could swear I say some screens that looked unbelievable, and IV was one of my favorites in the series, even though I never beat it because my friend took it back when I got only about a quarter through it.

More meaningless rambling.

In conclusion, check into this thread (http://charas-project.net/forum/showthread.php?forumid=12&catid=6&threadid=19908) soon enough.

Congrats on getting it (sorta) free. :D

I saw PoR at K-mart today. It was purty. I'm getting a job. Do the math.
Also, I said Mario Kart looked funny. I dunno. It's an odd sort of 3D, different from the N64. Like Sly Cooper almost, only not as pretty. Also the courses seem wicked, wicked short. Meh.
Also, why did no one tell me that Tales of Phantasia was on the DS? *glares* No cookies for ANY of you. Not even you, AFL! *grabs cookie and soda, continues to glare* I wanna get that too. My insane squealing fangirl side sez: "OMG mebbe they'll do Tales of Destiny next!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"
Also, quit dissing FF8. Seriously. Worse, stupider RPGs are beloved by this forum. *jabs KH fans with very sharp sticks*
Whatever its faults, FF8 was a pretty good RPG. Not jaw-drop amazing, mostly just "ooooh FMV...... oooooh.....", but still okay. You're all FF snobs.

They're not. short at all. In fact, it has four courses from each of the other Mario Kart games if its levels aren't enough. And the 3D doesn't look funny at all, and it damn sure doesn't look like Sly Cooper. You'd have to to have a seeing disorder to get that idea.

It's... Not? As far as I can tell, it's only on GBA. But I do believe that a Tales game is headed towards the DS some time soon. It should be in the style of Tales of Symphonia.

Maybe I saw it for the advance. What the heck ever. As long as I can play it, yes? *grin*
As for the whole Mario Kart thing, I don't mean it looks like Sly totally. I think it's the shading that throws me off. Maybe just the one course I noticed looked weird. Or maybe I had a migraine and was seeing screwy.
Also, I do still like FF, I guess. I'm just reeeeeeeally annoyed with it right now.

Post by: Archem on June 09, 2007, 04:01:50 AM
Totally. I love them. Like the Tony Hawk game that's on the DS. The first one, not the Downhill Jam one. If you find the first one, and you enjoy the series, but that. Great game. If not, then whatever. Star Fox Command is cool, too, but the flight portion is way too short. Worms: Open Warfare was fun, but a little limited, buggy, and too few weapons. I hope Open Warfare 2 fixes those problems. Mechassault is also awesome. The stylus-controlled aiming feels funky, and the graphics are ugly, but it's fun and has some rather impressive parts, like full voice-overs and no cut features. Except online multiplayer. It lacks that.

The PSP  is getting an FFT remake and a Castlevania remake. It's almost enough to want the thing. Almost.

Revenant Wings is going to be bad ****ing ***. I would like to get FF3 and 4 for DS but they're not on my must get list, although I don't really have a must get list anyway since I'm on a "Not buying stuff" roll right now for some reason. Probably because I'm always sitting around the house yelling at myself to work on 3.0. *shrug*

I played a bit of Diamond/Pearl while at a friend's house, and basically, if you weren't terribly impressed by the fact that almost everything that's been added since Red are Blue are little tweaks that, although significant to people who are really into the game, don't appeal to anyone who doesn't want to manage their berries and mining the underground and EV training and completing the National PokeDex (Like 500 Pokemon now, that's kinda excessive) and beating the Chinese farmers online and all the other nuances they've added to the game, then you aren't missing anything.

Also, if anyone has a PS2 with the sliding tray that they're not using, I'd love to hear from you about sending that baby over.

Hmm, I probably won't get FF4 DS, since I already have the GBA one. Unless they fix/improve lots of things (not just graphics and sound), especially fixing the level 70 glitch.
Title:
Post by: Osmose on June 09, 2007, 04:49:24 AM
Well, considering they're remaking the entire game in 3d, I'm going to say with a good amount of certainty that they aren't going to recycle the battle system code, so that llittle glitch will probably be gone.

They say the first FF game you play is the one you hold to highest regard.

This is understandably why I was so terribly disappointed after playing FF8 after FF7.

Worst game in the series that one is.

Well, that's true, but then again, I like FFT's battle system far more than any standard RPG system, and the story felt right instead of mildly emo with a testicle for a main character. Whatever. The others are still great, not counting FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2, or FFXI. The first two there skim by as ok, and the others seem like they don't deserve to exist. My opinion, though, so I don't care how it adds up to yours.

Well the new FFT is for Psp and the new FFCC is for DS, all the gameboy remakes will be for gba or ds and FFVII remake is for ps3 no? God I wish they give us a FF to the WII.

Symphonia is to the GC and PS2, Destiny is to Psp, Abyss is ps2, Tempest is ps2 as well I think and Phantasy is gba.

And I just realized that Pokemon aint being released here until the 27th of july and I´m leaving for a month with the caravan the 9th...

So I will at least purshase FFIII and Children of Mana most probably, they´ve been the ones looking the best.

Meaning Destiny is getting remade for the PSP? Cuz it was for the PS1.

If that is the case, my friends, I will officially sell my little bit of sanity AND the secrets of the universe (not including 42) for a PSP.
If not, you can still get it for a simple ToD disk. And a hug.

I did some reading <.< FF10 is the highest selling one and I can't believe FF8 ranked so high as one of the best games ever made.. -.-
FF7 as we all know is the most popular FF anyone that says other wise really isn't a FF fan we all know it's the most popular one of them all.
(Not the highest selling though)

They're putting even more FF's on the DS but who cares <.< The only FF I wana  play is FFT for the PSP =D and Zack's game I guess....

I hope the Futuristic Harvest Moon comes out on the DS I can't see myself playing that on the PSP

I love the FF muchly, and yeah, I'm a VII junkie, but I'm honest to god fed up with it for right now. I've been through the ones I like about 90 times (okay only 3 or 4 for most, more for 7, which I know too well for my own health), and now the only ones I haven't finished that I have access to are XII, X-2, and VI. VI I'm hooked on, so that's my FF fix. I'm probably gonna grab ToP when I have moneys.Or you could all pitch in to the "Buy Phayre DS Games Because She Only Owns 3 Handheld Games Because The Others Were Stolen By Her Foster Family" fund! Yay! Maybe if I buy ToP, Namco will say, "Oh! Phayre bought ToP! We should make ToD.... for the DS! Or bring our amazing PS2 remake to the US, since Phayre doesn't speak a word of Japanese! Yeah, that's it!"
But why does everyone dislike X around here? Personally, I think the storyline is amazing. There are 2 video game endings that have made my jaw drop in amazement, and those are FFIX and FFX. IX with the scene between Kuja and Zidane was fantabulous, not the stupid play ending thing.
......has anyone else noticed my tendency of dragging my own topics off-topic?
