Title: The Pick of Destiny
Post by: Almeidaboo on June 13, 2007, 08:54:21 PM
So yeah, Jack Black from Tenacious D has this idea he calls "Pick of Destiny" (name of a album of the band too) that only the great great artist ever had...to be more clear:

Quote
The legendary Pick Of Destiny. Who's had it before you?

JB: Mozart had it. Beethoven had it. Robert Johnson had it. The Beatles had it.

KG: Chuck Berry didn't have it, he was just really good. Did not need it. Elvis had it and tried to eat it.

JB: Little Jimmy Morrison had it. Richard Marx did not have it. A-Ha had it for like one song.

Who's got it now?

KG: Silverchair.

Have moustachioed prog-metallers Rush ever had it? Their 1976 album 2112 has a pretty similar story line.

JB: No. The truth is, the pick has never made it to Canada. They just wouldn't know what to do with it. I'll tell you this though. If Rush had had it, their lyrics would have been a lot better.

I`ll have to go with Kyle Gass on that one, SIlverchair`s got it big time. Their last album rules, as did all the other four.

So, in your opinion: who`s got the pick of destiny now?

Me. It's sitting on top of my TV, so I know this to be true.

I had it as of a few minutes ago, but I tried to eat it too.

Then I went to the bathroom, and I flushed the pick. The only way someone could have it now is if they live in the sewers.

EDIT: To be serious, I think A Day To Remember has it. They're killer, and everyone that's listened to them likes every song they've played. Not a single bad song, all of them are hits.

They don't even have singles, because no song outweights the others.

so I was sitting at my computer a while ago, in the sewars under Meiscool's house and I found it, But I gave it away to the Big rat named Jimmy for some Exotic Jams.
... Mmmmmm Exotic Sewar Jams

I think either Breaking Benjamin or Symphony X(Are they still around? Damn, I gotta keep track of that stuff) has it right now. Seriously, name one BB song that sucked?

Every song except Polyamourous?

They all sound like the exact same song.

I think... Green Day has it. American Idiot has sold more then all of their previous albums, and it came out of no where.

Well, if I remember correctly, the pick broke in half in the movie. I think that Herman Li and Sam Totman (guitarists of DragonForce) have the two halves. They're crazy fast and good.

I think Jesse Cook and Al di Meola have it. Except Jesse Cook is mostly flamenco fingerpicking, I think he still has it.

Mastodon have it. Without a doubt.

Let's broad the subject then...Who's had it?

Offspring had it until Spliter...they might get it back with the new stuff there is gonna come out..

Green Day had it in Dookie...then they lost it and borrowed it from Silverchair in American Idiot...

Pearl Jam had it in a few songs...they actually used it on their last album.

Linking Park asked for it a lil' bit, but it was rightfully DENIED.

The old guitarrist from Limp Bizkit could have had it, but it couldn't be granted until he left that band...

Kirk Hammet can get it whenever he wants...As do Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana.

The Pick of Destiny is prolly made of B.B. Kings nails...

Jimmy Page had it too...before Eddie an Halen had it!

Carlos Santana had to have had it at some point...either that, or he still does.

Oh, and I think Megadeth had it, too....

I've never really liked Kirk Hammett as a guitarist. Sure he plays solos and stuff, but he's not the sort of person who you listen to and think "wow", and he only uses the Blues scale for everything. He's cool, but overrated. James Hetfield is a better guitarist.

Also, Carlos Santana doesn't have the PoD; like Chuck Berry, he doesn't need it, he's just good.

I'm not sure if he still has it, but I'm fairly certain Marco Hietala of Nightwish had it for at least a little while.

Metallica had it for a bit, so did Megadeth and Syphony-X. But you guys don't know who Symphony-X is, do you?

What is that supposed to mean? I'm a big Offspring fan! I'm just a tad quirky.

Yes, their new album comes out the 26th of this month. I would definatly say Michael Romeo has the pick of Destiny. Jason Becker did have it, until his unfortunate diagnosis.

Plus, Offspring sucks.

Uhm. Playing guitar. And Pokemon Yellow and Blue.

And I'm sorry, but Offspring is just gay. They have some Ok-ish (even some hard) riffs, but still.

Heh, you, being you, could never like Offsrping, I don't even think it's strange...I pretty much know what's your music taste like XD

Offspring is the band that got me into listening music actually....

It lost quality but it's still one of my favs

Yeah. Pretty much anything complex or technical, I like it. Anything else... well, ya know, anyone can strum a few power chords, drop a bass line, or come up with pretty drum fills. And singing isn't a special talent, anyone can do it with practice. Mediocrity just doesn't interest me.

Then I have to deal with mediocrity within virtuosity. Two prime examples are Rusty Cooley and Theodore Ziras. Rusty is a badass guitarist, but when it comes to composition and structure, there's really not much to speak of. Ziras may be one of the fastest alt/sweep pickers I have ever seen, but most of it's emotionless shred (not that I don't appreciate it from time to time...).

Thankfully, not everyone's like that. Steve Vai because has very unique style. Jason Becker makes beautiful compositions. I'm also a fan of classical. But not the slow soft stuff. I mean like, Paganini's Caprices and things like that. Anyways. Yeah. String instrument virtuosity = good.

I gotta disagree entirely with you Des.

I hate Virtuosos. They're all about showing off how good they are, when music is really about melody. I'd much rather listen to Nirvana, John Lennon, The Offspring, etc. then guys like Vai and Satch sit there and jerk their guitar for an hour.

Yeah, but that ends up in the "taste" thing...some people like the bangbangbang and others like the prililililililililililololooooonnnnn!

Those are not virtuous and virtuous, respectively o.O

I like seeing good technique, of course, but it's not just that: I need good playing and feeling. That's what's good about blues: it's all about being good and having feeling.

I don't like robots like Satriani. I don't like trashies like any emo punk poop band you see nowadays (that are all about emo...tion -.-)...

I'm into balance. And whomever archives balance with greatness, gets the Pick of Destiny!

Music's about sounding good. It's not about having complicated solos or ear drum-smashing thrash sounds, it's about having a melodious attraction. A great musician doesn't necessarily make good music, and a good song doesn't necessarily require a good musician. But having a good musician helps. Matter of fact, I think you're a better musician if you can make good music from simple play techniques. That's talent.

But enough about that, who's your pick (of destiny)?
