Title: The Simpsons Movie
Post by: Archem on July 28, 2007, 02:33:35 AM
Time for my copy + paste talk about The Simpsons Movie!!!

I saw it today, and I must say, I was very satisfied with the results. If you love the series, you'll love the movie. If you like the series, but don't think it's as funny as it should be, then watch the movie. If you hate the series, then watch the movie. See where I'm getting at? I don't care what you think of the series, the movie is awesome.

The story is similar to what you would expect from the series: Something happens, followed by something else, and eventually something very far off from what started the snowball of laughter ends the whole story. You'll either laugh a lot at this movie, or you're some odd Hitler/Stalin mashup. And we're not talking about the alive and well versions, I'm talking about someone in Hell who gets the highest level of torture possible.

They pulled all the stops with this one,and (not counting the trailer clips) you won't see most of the jokes coming. That makes them even funnier! The animation looked great, and, save backgrounds and some large objects, the whole thing was in 2D. Yeah. None of that easy way out crap. The characters were what you'd expect: everyone's stupid. Even the U.S. government (gasp!). There was little not to love about this piece of animated, humorous genius.Let me tell you, this is now in my top thre movies of all time: Forrest Gump, The Simpsons Movie, and Fantasia. In that order, greatest to least. For those interested (you know who I'm talking to), Hans Zimmer did the music. There's even some "easter eggs" scattered about throughout the whole movie (credits, too!), so keep a sharp eye out for them!

This thing is full of jokes (not rehashed ones; some honest-to-goodness funny material!), it has a story that's surprisingly believable, and some spoilers lie below.

*****SPLOIER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!!*****

Green Day dies, Dr. Nick is either killed or very seriously wounded, you can see Bart's piece, Homer does the Double-Deuce, Lisa finds a boyfriend, Maggie's first word is "sequal", and Mr. Burns loses everything he owns.

*****SPLOIER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!!*****

Have fun disagreeing with me or watching the movie.

That's what I'm saying...

The fact that Fantasia is in your top 3 means you have taste. I MUST SEE THIS MOVIE.

I liked this movie. If you like family guy, watch this.

Because the movie seriously reminded me more of family guy than the simpsons.

Really? Family Guy? I can say that I only thought of Family Guy at the end with that motorcycle, and with that fishing trip flashback (mostly because it was a Family Guy-styled flashback).

Well, you gotta admit that normally, The Simpsons is very predictible.

This movie, at least to me, wasn't... which is why it reminded me of Family Guy.

hans Zimmer?  Not Danny Elfman?  Did they at least use Elfman's Simpsons theme in the movie somewhere?

Bump.

I just saw this. ****ing brilliant. I think I agree with Archem 1000%.

There were a handful of inconsistencies with the series, such as the Simpsons backyard, the house layout, a lot of minor things only someone like me would notice. And I'm sad that Sideshow Bob didn't make it into the final revision.

To answer Musha's old, old question, yes, they did use the Simpsons theme. And Hans Zimmer's music is highly inspired, and it really suits the Simpsons well, so you wouldn't really notice any "well that shouldn't sound like that" musics.

I think this year:
Simpsons
Hot Fuzz
300
Transformers

And I can't wait for the DVD and the 2+ movies worth of removed finished content!

I might go see this at Opry Mills today. I went to the IMAX yesterday to see Harry Potter.

Believe it or not, it doesn't suck. It's nothing impressive or anything, but as a film and not a blockbuster, it's a very well put together movie.

Being a Simpsons fan, I thought it was great. The soundtrack is amazing (I bought it shortly after I saw the movie). Aside from the fact that the track titles generally have nothing to do with the music, it's still a good soundtrack. My favorite two tracks are "You've Doomed Us All...Again" which is the music from the mob scene, and "Lead, Not to Read" which is the motorcycle ride at the end. Plus, who can't love the choral version of Spider-Pig?

He's not spider-pig, he's harry porker! That movie was great, I loved it when they had Arnold go "In was voted to LEEEEEEAD not REEEEAD" XD It was pretty damn good. And I liked the close to you song that they played during the marge/homer memory.. <<

I dunno...I think it was just an hour-and-a-half-long version of an episode....it's good, but kinda stretched out...

Just like in the show. I think it may be a running gag, like their ability to see any part of town from the kitchen window.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... waittt a minute here. Are you saying those are the best movies of the year? Knocked Up is the funniest movie I've seen in theatres in YEARS, Rush Hour 3 was awesome, and I THINK I'm going to see SuperBad tonight, and that looks amazing!

On topic, the Simpsons movie was really good. But I don't remember Maggie speaking at all... must have been like at the end of the credits? Cause I definately do not remember that in the least...

Yeah. The credits themselves contain jokes and easter eggs. Al the way to the very end, even.

"I think you've gone mad with power"
"Of course I have! Ever tryed going mad without power? It's boring! No-one listens to you!"

Man that line was so funny in an old wine kind of way. It was so my favourite line.

The bit with marge's video almost brought a tear to my eye :( then I remembered I had nuts so it didn't :guns: :frag: :para:

For me, that line is second only to "For once, the rich white man is in control!"

The best movies, in order of best to least best that I've seen this year. Last year I only saw 3 movies, so 4 is sort of a record. And I (clearly) haven't seen those 3 you mentioned.

I've seen two movies this year: Trannies (more commonly known as Transformers) and The Simpsons Movie. They were both admittable after paying cash for tickets. Also, they were both worth commenting quite positively on after watching.

Ah, ok then, I misunderstood.

I saw Superbad yesterday too, it was HILARIOUS. If you like movies like Knocked up and 40 Year old Virgin, go see it. NOW! What are you waiting for?

That's odd... I work at a movie theater, and heard it was slightly disappointing, but okay. I'm still seeing it though, because I'm a fan.

*Trying to decide whether to be honest or go with the crowd. Trying to decide whether to be honest or go with the crowd. Okay okay be honest, but say it very caaarefully. Pretend you're talking to some artist in CA*
Well, it was okay, but I can't help thinking it would have been so much better if they'd made it a year or so ago. I just don't think Simpsons is as funny these days.

I mean, I came home and watched the 'clown college' episode again. It was just so much better than the movie. The trouble was, Simpsons focuses a lot on characters other than the Simpsons, which is cool. But in the movie, as showing too much of one character would omit loads of others, they just tried to cram loads of people into the background and let the Simpsons get on with their stuff.

It didn't help that I'd seen most of the funny bits on the trailer >.>

Also, Homer is too uncaring these days. He used to have a glimmer of humanity but it's been sacrificed for more funny factor. He would have never refused to leave Alaska after Marge's "In a marriage, a wife gets to ask one thing" speech. He loves her too much.

If I saw it again I'd probably prefer it. But I guess I became set on disliking it near the beginning and then picked out all the faults.

And "Sequel" was Maggie's second word. Her first was "Daddy", if anyone remembers.

I actually do remember that, but given that it's unclear whether or not the episodes (and in this case, movie) are unfolded in chronological order, this may very well be her actual first word. I mean, the episode where Bart passed his grade level by working during a freak snow day is easily not in line with the rest of the series, because he passes the grade level, but he is never shown in any other grade level or with any other teacher (flash forward episodes excluded).

As for Homer being less caring, that is obviously a way to add conflict and add to that part of the character and plot. Sure, there was an amazing level of conflict already, but it helped add length, strengthen existing conflicts, and is a way to add jokes. Seriously, a caring father is less funny than an irresponsible oaf that has his own selfish thoughts in mind.

This is not posted to counter your points or try to disprove your statements, but to express my views and how they differ from yours. Personally, I like a lot of the newer episodes better than the older ones, because there's less "family values" and more room for extreme family dysfunction and ridiculous settings.

SPOILERS

In my view of things, Homer refused Marge's plea because he didn't actually think they would leave. Before, whenever something split them apart, they would come back together in the end. Homer figured that if he stayed, the family would stay as well. He never thought they would actually leave without him. That's why he runs out of the cabin calling for Marge and the kids after watching the tape: He's hanging onto the hope that they're still there and will come back to him.

Maybe I'm over-analyzing this, I don't know. I'm just throwing in my two cents as to some reasoning for his behavior.

END SPOILERS

Yep, Daddy indeed WAS Maggie's first word, BUT JUST WHO WAS AROUND TO HEAR IT?

Nobody, that's right.
Sequal, while being Maggie's second word, is only the first word anyone has heard her say.

Yes, I clearly thought about this as well. :p

CoolZidane, I like your thinkin'.

And Archem, not that it's important or relevant, but really enjoyed the old "family values" episodes (the first 4 or so seasons) before The Simpsons decided to focus on comedy. There was also something about those episodes, where the family seemed more, for the lack of a better word, "realistic". Homer considered suicide at least twice in the series, the first time was in the first season, where he was depressed for not having a job to provide for his family (I think, it was in the first season and it's been a while) and more recently the one where he got the 300 score in bowling and then got bored with life (or something).
The first episode actually made it seem important, while the second was more "less chattin' more splattin'".

I guess I just like a little more drama with my comedy.

I don't like simpsons but mostly just becouse they never show the new episodes in Sweden it's just the same old re-runs three times a day. I promise you seeing the same old episodes a thousands time can drive anybody mad.

The movie was great, it was great animated, it was fun, it was a slice of simpson-heaven.
