Title: Scratch developed by MIT
Post by: clockworkroutine on August 29, 2007, 01:01:45 AM
Scratch Website (http://www.scratch.mit.edu)

Just putting this out there.

This is a free game developer developed by MIT or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Its similar to Rm2k3 but closer to GameMaker - but Easier to use than GameMaker.

It doesn't seem to require a powerful processor either.

If you don't feel the energy to learn a coding language - if you feel like just dragging or clicking strings of code and putting them together like legos - this is a really good program.

You don't have to make an rpg either you can make whatever program you wish - though that can be done with Rm2k3 also.

There are some interesting features that Rm2k3 doesn't have either.

I chose to look at it because I've been looking for a developing program that can meet the needs of larger graphics - and more freedom of movement than Rm2k3.

Seems nifty. Dling it now. Although it seems like it cant make a scrolling platformer.

Yep seems about right - well you could make what they call backgrounds - and each background being a different frame to give you the side scrolling effect as your character sits still in the center of the screen - but I do not believe that's what you would spend your time doing.

Its a little weird to work with at first but I understand how it works now - if you have questions ask and I can provide an answer even if its not the one you're looking for.

Haha, worth a shot. Primary question: Can you make a side-scroller like Mega Man X?

There's no function that moves the screen - so far as I can tell - so most likely not - but you can make a game like classic zelda when he touches an edge it changes the scene he is in.

Have you tried working with the pen function?  Its so entertaining - I have my sprite moving around the screen creating a trail behind him like an etch sketch.  They have a variable for colors, there is so much to this - you could make a game like Okagi I believe where you use Caligraphy to do different actions.

Sap a few months of my life.

This program - I'm sorry - it just gets more and more exciting.

There's a sound function - and sound variables - the program comes with its own set of really great instruments - and plays different notes according to variables.

If you mess around with the random numbers variables and place it inbetween which instrument to use function and note to play function - you get some really absolutely wonderful - ambient sounds.

MIT - this college even though its a college for technology has the best music program and the best art program in the entire country.  Better than Berkley better than RISD.  I find that funny.
