Title: Public Announcement: Charaman Account Taken Over
Post by: Osmose on September 06, 2007, 12:16:11 AM
Figured I'd make an announcement about it. Charaman's account was taken over recently by IPs matching Lord Raffles. After talking with Charaman about this we've banned the account.

After the eventually-in-a-few-years-soon-I-promise-server-move we'll have access to fix his password and give it back to him. In the meantime, anything he's said has been someone else talking as him, so don't hold it against the poor fella.

What proof do we have that you speak the truth?
Charaman stood for his beliefs, and the staff knew they needed to silence him, so they banned his account, making up this sorry excuse for doing so.
Hear the truth, fellow members, the staff is perpetuating more lies while we stand idle, and this is intolerable!
Let us revolt and free ourselves from the...

 - pff, sorry guys, I just couldn't do that with a straight face.

Madness? You better believe it's madness.
Now to investigate if we can ban the IP Raffles used as Charaman.

There can't be that many proxies.

Wait; forever? He's been puppeteering (apparently not a word; thank you Firefox 2.0 spellcheck!) your account for a long time now?

Woo, thank God for that. In the sense that you did not actually go insane. Still, shitsux.

I checked out that topic that you guys were talking about. Yep, looks like someone hacked Charaman. I don't even know who Lord Raffles is, come to think of it...

...Well, whatever. Burn the witch!

Sure, drop me in it, bizzatch.*

This sucks. It's also slightly unusual that Raffles has moved from his usual tactic of verbal warfare, up to outright hackery.

Everyone change your passwords, now.

* For the record though, I am Lord Raffles. Trolltrolltroll.

Concerning how long ago it was, it was a while back. Since charaman stopped posting anyway.
Title:
Post by: Razor on September 06, 2007, 08:08:13 PM
Of course, if Charaman had a TK account, he could have used the same password here and there.

In which case, if Raffles got his hand on that one, he could/would/obviously did try it here, and it worked.
A possibility.

Raffles can't hack Charas's system. As I so painfully went into detail during the Warxe trial, Charas's password security system is decent enough to the point where, if you can break into it, you probably have bigger fish to fry and wouldn't want to get on the board by breaking into something stupid like Charas.

I also highly double Raffles got Charaman's password from TK's forums. Many forum password encryption systems make it so even the people that own the boards can't break into them. I'm almost certain Charas is like that - Alex could change anyone's password if he wanted to, but he couldn't tell you what it is without changing it.

Trolls rely on lies and trickery for their fun, not computer skills. And people don't just mysteriously find other people's passwords for no reason. Draw your own conclusions from the situation; I've made mine.

Yeah....If he was gonna hack accounts, Im sure there aqre more strategic accounts to hack. Password guessing can be easy with a bit of personal information

Okay, will someone please tell me what's up with the whole Raffles thing? I'd like to know what the hell happened when he was here the first time, since I can tell he's a bit of an arrogant jerk.

Seriously, what did he do that was so bad?

Yes, my conclusion is that you gave it to them when you were admin.

 Yaaaaaaay for conspiracies!

Seriously, though, let's not staring making them up.

Roland, he was a jerk, basically, with a ego that could choke an elephant, but he was smart. Managed to convince most of the members that the staff was not trustworthy and that we should get rid of the mods and admins. I myself believed his words at the beginning, as I'm ashamed to admit, and I had some discussions, mostly with Darkfox who was the one who got madder at Raffles than anyone else. We then argued a lot in the forums and members leaved, everyone pretty much hated Raffles at this point, but he had an alibi: He hadn't broken any rules! Sure, he argued with Mods and Admins, but even so he never personally offended them, he also didn't no anything ban-worthy. So this continued by around three months or so, at which point DF disappeared for a while and later on said he had tried to commit suicide or something, I wasn't around at the time, but that seem it was it. Anyway, Raffles backed down at the beggining, but then started striking again. Then Alex, or Our Great Savior Alex the Harpist as I like to call him, returned riding a shining gold flying horse, while a chor of angels sung about his many battles in the far land of Italy, at any rate, he deemed Raffles was a great writter, but pretty much evil, and since he is the head of Charas he could ban Raffles without any excuse other than "Well, he was a jerk people." And there was much rejoicing, and from the deepest swamps to the highest mountains all the living beings were happy and danced. But the now-banned Raffles had revenge in his thoughts, and back in his hometown he hired some accomplices, and after the moon had diasppeared and reappeared three times he came back, disguised, and this time our great savior Alex wasn't here. However, now that Raffles had been already banned, his mere comeback was a crime, and as such the Admins had power to deal with him this time. And so he and his friends were defeated and sent back to the dark lands from where they came. But the legend goes that once in each blue moon, the Trolls regroup and make plans of once again destroying Charas.

....why, yes, I let myself go after that part where Alex came back, so?

http://editthis.info/charas_project/Lord_Raffles has the gist of it. The key here isn't so much what he did but how long he did it for: December 1st 2004 and August 1st 2005. That's a pretty long time and lots of people got frusterated with the site and left during that period.

He's made a few halfhearted attempts to come around since then, particularly during the Troll Invasion (http://editthis.info/charas_project/History_of_Charas#Troll_Invasion_and_Sanctuary_Fortress), but mostly he's an idiot. He quickly starts ranting about Hitler or moderator opression, gets IP scanned, found to be a Raffles login, and banned. If he wasn't such a retard he'd be a little more subtle at the beginning and slip under the radar, but thankfully he's not.

Edit: I loved writing that history article, but Warxe's chop-shop edits made me cry too much to continue to the present.

This is why you choose a completely random word for your password, capitalize a few of the letters and add some symbols somewhere.  Not only can someone not guess your password from learning things about you, even if they knew the word, it would still be difficult to "hack".

Such as _bi[]GRAphy.  Even if I said my password was "biography", it wouldn't help you a whole lot.

i use numbers and letters combined now adays, and a few of them with € where it lets me.

I did use however those kinds of passwords, actually I still do, but they're all scrambled in the intarweb in other accounts, which usernames have never been mentioned.

My oldest password however was meteor, and my first here in charas.

OMG INFORMATION THAT CAN BE USED AGAINST ME

My password has a VERY distant connection with my name (real, not screen) that only people who know both my real name and ME outside of the interweb will be able to guess. I love using obscure passwords!

I can attest to this. Also, in his defense in case of any accusations, I'd like to say I let him use my account so he could read the thread in the Sanctuary after I brought it up to him. Funny how things work out that way. Gemini moved it from AoA because of its topic, but charaman could then no longer see it and find out if he were to come back.

My password is and always has been consisting of letters that don't and can't spell a word. Except if you use just the letters "a" or "i", as they can spell "a" or "I".

Anyway, I changed my password yesterday. I decided my previous one was WAY too obvious, so now I've gone for something personal and unguessable.

Nah, it's not your fault. I should've said I had known it was Raffles. Charaman told me how he was leaving Charas and only possibly posting very occassionally, so when I saw the account being used I figured something was up. Then when I saw the posts I was pretty much sure of it, but I couldn't be completely sure, so I just made a post agreeing with ZKX's humorously expressed apathetic viewpoint (which I still have to say I largely agree with). Once I told charaman, Osmose had already decided to talk to him.

But that's all done and over with now. Just showing how overall, I should've acted in charaman's defense immediately and tried to help clear things up earlier.
