Well, I've started my first project on RPG Maker 2003. Its just a little practice game I'm working on. I’m mostly using RTP though I do have a couple of extras I imported. Like I said though, this game is mostly for practice.
I'm still fairly new to RM and so far only have map experience. So I thought I'd start a quick little project to get the feel of events, character stats, and monster groups. So far there's only two monsters though. ^^; One of which is kind of a sub-boss.
I'm using the preset items too for the most part, but next project I promise to more of my own.
Anyway enough rambling. Here's some of the info.
STORY
This game is about four warriors. Cliche, I know. They find themselves trapped in another dimension after taking a booby-trapped treasure from some ruins(it doesn't show in their items at the moment but they still have the treasure).
Anyway, this dimension they find themselves in is home to some monsters they've not seen before and the whole thing is basically an underground maze. They decide to explore and eventually find themselves in the small town of Salva(this is just the first of a few). There’s a woman whose child has gone missing so you’ll want to save her. That’s pretty much as far as it goes for now.
But stay tuned. Later demos and the final game will involve evil cults, demon gods, and a dimensional key thats the only way out.
MAIN CHARACTERS
Alan
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Personality: Alan is a natural-born leader, and so is the head of the group. He can have a short temper at times and tries to be tough. He's probably the most frustrated by the situation.
Alistair
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Personality: Alistair's specialty is attack magic, though believe it or not, he is the most calm and collected one of the group. He tends to be like a big brother to the others though and is always ready to defend them with his life.
Kira
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Personality: She is a silent ninja you don't want to cross. While she does speak its not very often and usually only in response to something directed at her. She can be very deadly when she needs to.
Annie
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Personality: Annie has a tendency to speak her mind even at the worst possible moment which can get not only her, but the entire group in trouble. Despite this, she is intelligent and an efficient healer.
SCREEN SHOTS

You’ll start off here, though the party isn’t entirely sure how it happened. The crystal is there to heal your party and save your progress.

Blobs will be the first monsters you encounter

The caves you find yourself trapped in are a maze, like the game’s title suggests

The first town you’ll enter is Salva. As with all towns in this game, check every barrel, crate, urn, and shelf for items.

Talk to everyone. You never know who will have a quest for you. And no quest goes unrewarded.
There’s still a lot of things I need to mess with. At this point it takes a lot more experience than necessary to level up since I’m at the defaults right now. There’s a lot of other issues I need to work on too. But for now, its just at a demo stage with only one quest to take which will promptly return you to the title screen when completed at this point.
Anyway, here’s the first demo for Deadly Labyrinth

Enjoy, and all constructive criticism is welcome, as well as appreciated.

Does seem like you have a few things going for you in terms of mapping, but be careful with RTP, as people tend to frown on that. Other than that, keep going and you might come out with some good stuff. :)
-
Yeah, I know its pretty much frowned upon. ^^; I'm mainly using RTP since this is a practice game so I can get into the swing of things.
Once I know more about what I'm doing and start making games more seriously, I won't be using RTP anymore.
-
theres nothing wrong with rtp if you use it well. Your maps have the potential to be quite good. You just need to find a way to spruce them a touch i think.
-
Your honesty about it being just for practice is refreshing, and your character descriptions show a bit more depth than the usual starter game so I have some faith in your ability to tell a story. Practice game or not, it looks sort of cool. I'll be waiting for it.
-
love it.
-
Hate to say it, but I've gotta delay the project. Maps and teleport events won't cooperate right now.
So until I can get them working the way they were before, I can't add anything new as far as locations go.
-
I think the only problem with your mapping is that the higher ground is the same as the lower ground. You know what I mean?
Also, explain that problem in more detail and I'll try to help.
-
:O! RTP used well zomg
-
Yeah, I see what you mean. x.x I'd like to find better for the higher ground, but nothing seems to look good.
As for the problem... I'm doing same as I did before for placing teleport events to move from area to area and all, but now all of a sudden, new maps I've added it will claim they don't exist if when testing the game I try to move to them. The older teleport events still work its just the new ones on new maps that want to give me this problem.
-
Looking back up at the character descriptions, something bugs me...
"Personality: Alan is a natural-born leader, and so is the head of the group. He can have a short temper at times and tries to be tough. He's probably the most frustrated by the situation."
How can he be a natural leader if he has such a bad temper? The two really can't mix. I hate that about so many games. Who ever decided the main character has to be the leader, any way? It's just so... BLEGH >.>
-
A good leader just needs to know how to properly run a team and use good tactics. That could possibly what it is; good tactical skill, but poor temper... Right?
-
Ach... Well, that does sound like a bit of a problem.
There's a few options. If you've deleted a lot of maps, and then remade them, the teleport events might be broken, but that would be old ones, not new ones...
You could try the map tree error route and copy everything over to a new game, in the exact same order and see whether that helps... Or alternatively, wait and see. rm2k3 is temperamental. It develops problems and then heals itself. No-one really understands everything about it.
-
Yeah, I thought of that too really. x.x I wanted him to have a temper but at the same time I wanted him to lead. Not so much because he's the main character but more because when I was thinking on him he was my favorite. Its mostly he's a leader through the major decisons that come up later on, though for other things, Alistair tends to be the advisor which I hope balances out somewhat through the game. Kinda like a captain and first mate on a ship. Kira WAS going to be the advisor before I figured the strong silent type suited her more. Anyway, yeah, Alan makes good leadership decisions, he just has trouble keeping his temper in check, not so much in the violent way but in the yelling kinda way. x.x
And thanks. I'll see what it does real quick and if its not fixed itself, then I'll try copying everything later on when I get more time. x.x
