Title: Steam
Post by: GaryCXJk on March 29, 2008, 11:37:13 PM
A few weeks ago my brother bought a new laptop, or actually a tablet PC. It has all the nice stuff, including a touch screen and a lightscribe dvd writer. Well, a few months earlier he bought an external lightscribe dvd writer, which I helped to pay him, so that I could actually use it too. Since he already has lightscribe on his tablet PC and since he uses his tablet more often than his regular PC nowadays, he just gave me the lightscribe.

Well, since the day I bought my current PC, I wasn't able to play certain DVDs. Those were often DVDs from other regions, but also copy protected DVDs. And that really became a problem. See, I bought Half-Life 2 a few months after the purchase, but haven't been able to play the game for about two years or so. But now I'm finally able to do this.

Before I actually got to play the game, I heard of a lot of complaints about Steam. Steam didn't work, it had too much lag and such. It often crashes when you don't want it, it hijacks your computer, slows every process down, all that sorts of things.

I can understand these frustrations...

But...

I haven't experienced them. Even more, thanks to Steam I am able to play the games I couldn't play before, like Sam & Max. Seriously, even though only one episode was given out for free (Abe Lincoln Must Die) I had loads of fun, and only with that episode. And you know what? I want more. I'm currently downloading Prey over Steam (this weekend for only $4,95!!!), and I'm able to do that because of ClickAndBuy.com! I'm not even using a credit card!

I already made two other purchases using Steam, Garry's Mod 10 and Audiosurf, and so far there are no complaints. Well, Steam itself does seem to not respond at some times, especially when another program hijacks your computer, and it won't close properly when shutting down the computer, but overall, I'm loving it.

Don't people LOVE steam/counterstrike/halk life/etc?? That's what I always thought.

Apparently not, seeing as most love the games, but hate Steam like the turds that emit it.

I've never had any real problems with Steam.

Spoilers: Get TF2. DO IT.

Okay then. I don't like any of those games, so I was wondering.

Steam has been nothing but a convenience for me. I'm particularly fond of being able to transfer games simply by logging in on another computer, and not needing all those CDs is a blessing. I've had friends with irrational hatred for Steam, but they all see Steam as a modern day necessity now. You should look into a little mod known as Insurgency. It rules like all get-out.

Oh, and Prey is win. I bought it a while back (got the collector's edition for cheap, and I quite like the pewter figurines), and while I haven't beaten it (can you believe I'm stuck?), I've loved every minute of gameplay.

I was going to download Insurgery, but then I found out that I only had a few gigs, and I wanted to save every gig left for other things.

Steam is very very annoying to me, but nothing bad. I have dial up, so I can't download games or use steam at all, but I still have to try and boot up steam everytime I want to play one of those games (over a LAN and stuff). So no real problems, just annoying lol.

Steam was bad at the beginning, but since VALVe's developers don't suck ****, it has been improved to the point that opne wonders how they got along without it.
