Just wondering if anyone else did this: in-jokes in your games or references to inspiration/similarities. I find myself doing it a lot, i.e. one of the main characters, a good friend of Christophe's but decidedly crazy, gets his eye messed up. Conversation ensues and inevitably, the topic of cherry blossoms pops up. (god damn it Phayre, you and your girly CLAMP) Or Arin is repeatedly taunted with references to water, inability to swim, and irony due to similarities with Tales of Destiny's Leon. (And there she goes again!)
Anyone else pay homage like this? Not to the point where outsiders raise an eyebrow and say, "WTF is this designer on?" though ^^
-
Well, generally you see it still being funny, but as an homage. Sometimes it doesn't have to be comedy.
I want to try and pay homage to Lunar SSS somehow, and FF4,6,7,10, all of which inspired me a lot.
-
I'm doing this like crazy with my game. It's an FF Fangame so I kinda have to. There are a lot of references to Vagrant Story as well.
-
Sierra games inspired me to start making these stupid references, out of character jokes filled with sexual inuendo and the like XD
I saw how much funner a game actually is with a sense of humor.
I want to try and pay homage to Lunar SSS
Alex look alike named Alek stands around a cliff with a giant sword embedded into it talking about Dyne/Dine/Dune/Dyrn/Dyme/whatever, perhaps? O.o

My game references several Internet phenomenons like O RLY, Rickroll'd, Chuck Norris Facts, and a Potter Puppet Pals parody.
Mostly Chuck Norris.
And Chuck Norris.

BOTHERBOTHERBOTHER
haha... I'm such a geek

Even though my games never get very far and the stories make it farther, I usually have a ton of music references. Not like JoJo's though, with every other name a band, but there's usaally a few.

Now... where did Snape go?
More importantly, where the hell am I?
Oh well... naked time!!!
I used to put tons of in jokes into my rpgs but my latest one seems to be going down a more professional route.

Yeah, I tend to use far too personal jokes that only works among my friends... So I usually leave them out.
But things that reoccur:'
Trogdor, either as a dragon, song or summoning spell. Why? Since that flash is awesome.
Me, as in the purple mage; mostly because most of my games are binded with eachother through the purple mages but still.
Elias: A good friend of mine who always screws up, wants to be a doctor, can't really keep the same tone of the voice for more than 5 seconds, tries to sing rock without any kind of idea what it's saying and, well. He's black, not that it matters that much but his afro is the ****. Usualyl as save points, item stash.
ZKX: Summon, name or weapon(Staff of the pink one)
Can't think of anything else to be honest, I like to keep e'm as clean as possible to be honest(not that I've finished most of them anyway).

If I add references, it's almost never in the main dialogue... Strikes me as a bit unprofessional. But then again this is amateur game making. Fun is the most important part.
Still, that doesn't prevent me from throwing some ripped joke on a tombstone or something of that nature. Usually from the most obscure game I can think of.

My current as-of-yet-not-publicised-or-having-a-thread project (Yeah, exclusive right here) is hugely inspired by Opeth's Still Life album. As a result it's full of references to Opeth songs.
-
Anything I make is filled with references to hundreds of more or less obscure metal bands.
-
While it's important to include humour aspects, it's best to keep in mind that parodies, references, and in-jokes eventually get old (albeit at different rates).
Chuck Norris isn't funny anymore, no matter what way you slice it.
Puns however, are timeless. The kind of naming system the Phoenix Wright games had, for example. Groan-worthy possibly. But still funny.

Oh yeah, I forgot my stories. When I was new here I wrote a story and named the Main character Joe Forgend (AFL) and his friend Phayre. A more recent comedy story I wrote has a reference to Banana Phone, Scooby-Doo, Phayre's Vanilla Coke, Mountain Dew, a character named Ian (Me), "My Precious," and how long I write my stories (We're only suppose to write 5, however, I write 14.) My friend's story features Dora.

Vanilla Coke for honor. And it's not even diet, which means I got it special for you. (phayre fears regular soda for some reason)
