Title: Resources? Where?
Post by: Option A on April 27, 2008, 07:35:33 AM
Exactly where does one go to find good resources nowadays?

And yes, I've already been to your own 'complete resources', and let me tell you it's chaos over there. Sure, it has some good resources but it's not sorted out properly, so in order to get to the good stuff you have to browse through thirty pages of complete crap and lets just say; patient and me aren't two sides of the same coin.

So where do you go looking for good rpgmaker resources?

There is a search function you know? Works pretty well if you know what you are looking for.

The thing is, I don't. I'm just looking for quality resources, and so the search function isn't much use to me.

Ok, don't you think that was just a little cold?

I mean yes, I do agree that some of the resources found hereare sub-par for a couple of reasons, but you're going into a sweeping generalisation.

After all if we're not good enough for you, you can always just go and make your own; we won't stop you.

So... You are just looking for resources for the heck of it? I'm sorry but that doesn't make much sense.

I'm just saying, the fact that complete resources is open for anyone to submit their own resources also makes it one of the most random collection of resources you can find. And so I'm sure some of the resources, if not most of it, is just something somebody's been fooling around with. And even if you do manage to find something decent, the chances of finding other resources that matches with the same style is at the minimum.

Forgive me, I was not looking to offend anyone, and I probably chose the wrong selection of words. I'm no better at making my own resources than the worst around here, never said I was.

I like to know what resources I have available to me before I think of what kind of game I want to make. How does that not make sense?

The question was very simple; "where do YOU go looking for resources?" If no one's looking to reply on that matter, then this thread lacks purpose.

So your sayingm you have no idea what game your aming yet. Yo u just want to get resources to make the one your about to make. Deoending on what you find, the game will change. Yeah that totally makes sense.......not. You should write a story first then decide what you want to search for. It cuts that process in just about half if you have an idea. Like o lets say you hava run down house. Search for something like that.

And about the matching. If you find sets by the same person you'll get  a good match most likely. Meiscool has just about all his chipsets in the complete resources. Search his name.

And if the question was a simple where do you go sort of thing. You should have just asked that. Without the complete resources bit. But to answer that question, I used to go to:
--Phanxgames- but their resource gallery is down
--Crankeye
--Gamingw.net

Sure, it does cut the gamemaking process in half if you have an idea to begin with, but if this idea invloves resources that are nowhere to be found it also cuts the whole project in half. I like to focus on looking for resources that can provide me with the inspiration to start writing a story, this is how I do things, always have, and it's worked well for me so far. So please, don't butcher my ways just because they don't make sense to you.

And I realize now that mentioning the complete resources was a mistake. I did it to avoid the topic but unfortunately it had the opposite effect. However, I thank you for answering my question. I shall take what you said under advisement and remember it.

part of making games involves laying out your idea.
idea includes theme. I dont believe you are making a serious sttempt.

Scroll through the resources here. Some are bad and some are awesome.

If that doesnt work either then you prety much havea shallow mind. You dont think outside the box. Its not that I am critizising or anything its just there is a world of imagination around you and you dont think about it. You dont use i. There are literally 100 million possibilities for a game and resources. I got great ideas for games. The one thing I lack is knowledge of rm2k3. I can find resources one way or another. Maybe makemy own or edit some. Its not as hard as you think it is. Your making it harder than you need to.

Eh, I don't really have any resource sites that they didn't already say.  Well, that's not entirely true.  If you have any kind of skill putting individual monsters sprites (arms, legs, stuff like that) Spriter's Resource is epic.

Just like any person would watch a movie, read a book, listen to a song or look at a picture for the purpose of gaining inspiration I've chosen to look for my inspiration in resources. You need inspiration in order to get an idea, and so the process begins.

I'm sorry if you think I'm not making a serious attempt, gemini. I hope to one day be able to prove you wrong.

I believe that one of the most important things for me is the fact that I more or less do everything myself.
It's better that way. I can get all my chars the way I want them and I can make sure that I got just those poses I need.

I actually make charsets and such as the project reaches that exact point. Like when I made "Sprite for life", I needed a merchant so I made a merchant.
I had to have a better death scene when climbing down into the ventilation; well, there we have it.

But I guess that I can't argue with you looking for a source of inspiration. Just sounded like you needed something for a project but didn't know what you wanted.

Good luck though, might just be worth looking through all the stuff in the CS.
