Title: Mayoral game contest!
Post by: Phayre on May 23, 2008, 05:10:55 AM
As the first mayor of Charas, I hope to set a precedent-- the mayoral game contest. Charas, after all, is a game making forum, believe it or not. Here's the twist: each mayor shall choose the aspect of the game which shall be most heavily judged, based on what is important to them.

Because I am a writer, the most heavily judged aspect shall be the storyline and how well it is conveyed. Captivate me with your writing and visual technique used to accentuate it, and the prize shall be yours!

EDIT: The contest is extended to August 23. The judging will take place after Phayre gets settled in college.

The rules:
1. The contest starts as soon as this post goes up. It ends (EDIT: THREE MONTHS) THREE months from now (August 23) or whenever Phayre stops being mayor, whichever comes first. EDIT: You may present a game you have been working on.
2. Normal game contest rules apply-- easily playable, et cetera.
3. Although the most important aspect will be the story, other aspects are important as well-- lack of eyeburn, use of decent coding, grammar and spelling (Phayre is obsessive about it in RPG maker games) should all be taken into consideration.
4. Remember-- game, not movie. Just because it's a story-focused contest doesn't mean I want to sit down and watch people talk forever. If I wanted that, I'd go make fun of FFXII.
5. Your game can be as short as you like. Even a short game can have a great story, like a short-short compared to a novel. Try not to get too long.

The rubric:
Story--
Originality: 5 points
Effectiveness of writing/dialogue: 5 points
Character depth/development: 5 points
Use of visual elements to tell story: 5 points

Other--
Lack of eyeburn (graphics): 5 points
Passable gameplay: 5 points
Lack of earburn (music): 5 points
Grammar/spelling: 5 points

Overall, the best score would be 40 points. The prize would be the esteem of your mayor, the title of Best Storyteller in All of Charas, and possibly a custom graphics job (wallpaper, avatar, etc) by her. Oh, and so much virtual vanilla Coke you could fill a virtual Olympic swimming pool with it. Alas, boobs are not a prize option. Sorry.

So, weave me some fantastic stories, Charas!

One month eh? Quite the tight deadline...

But nevertheless, I shall see to it that something will be made, although I believe that I will fail at the Eyeburn parts.

EDIT: Yay for the three month change!

what's the policy of RTP graphics? is it a yay or a nay? and are there penalties?

As long as it looks decent, RTP is okay, since the focus will be on the story. Another easy option would be the Mac and Blue, since they have a pack available where it's all pre-set-up and all.

I feel like taking part in this. However, given the busy nature of my life right now, that might not be possible.

I'll see what I can do.

I'm debating firing up the maker for the first time in like a year to make something simple for this. Seems pretty straightforward.

Hmmm, I was very tempted to say no until I saw the time change to 3 months. NOW I just may be interested... This seems like my kinda thing. I may not be the best programmer, but when it comes to story...
PIMPMAN HAS JOINED THE [STRIKE]BRAWL[/STRIKE] CONTEST!

Oh, you changed it to three months? That's a pretty bad idea, and I'll tell you why in about three months. Oh well.

I'd change it back to one month if I were you. The incoming deadline encourages you to just finish it.

I've been playing around with a side project so I may enter... yeah...

Is this going to be limited to certain makers?  Do you mind VX or XP enteries?

Like all things, I'll give this a shot. I just came up with an idea I'd like to try out anyway.

:D

Question. Would it be alright if an entrant just programs up to a certain point in the story, to make it a little more dramatic, or create the idea of a sequel? Because this idea I have is getting huge and if I program it all, I won't be able to make it before August 23rd. :/

Okay, here's the deal. Your story should have some kind of resolution, but it does not have to be a final resolution.
Example: Ash Ketchum wants to be a Pokemon master. He has a Pikachu. Team Rocket steals his Pikachu all the time while Ash wanders around the world. Ash's final resolution would be the end of his Pokemon adventure when they run out of gym leaders for him to demolish. You wouldn't have to go that far. It would be acceptable to just show an episode, like Ash meets a fancy Pokemon, Ash's Pikachu gets stolen, Ash and fancy Pokemon pwn Team Rocket and save Pikachu. It's a minor resolution but not a total conclusion.
Or perhaps the bombing of the first reactor in FFVII. A subquest that involves some character growth. Think of it as a short story vs. a novel, or a single arc of a longer story.

All right! A reminder everyone: entries are still open, and you have about a month left. I'd really like to see some submissions for this before I head off to college. Good luck, and happy making. If you need any editorial advice, you can IM or PM me. Following/not following my advice will not affect your chances, by the way.
Make the mayoral game contest a successful tradition!

Apologies for the double post, but yes! Enter! I'm almost NOT MAYOR ANYMORE.
