I'm just looking for opinions. So which do you prefer?
-
Worldmaps.
-
depends on the game honestly........
-
Oh and I would also prefer it if you post reasons why you prefer one or the other.
-
Worldmaps. Because.
-
If you want an epic feel, use a world map.
-
I use world maps, but I don't make it to where you can walk on them, just use a pointer to choose which place to kinda "warp" to.
I perfer the kind of world maps that are in SoM to the kind in FF and such.
-
I like world maps myself, becuse it feels realistic.
They are very convient if you make maps in real life(like your a board game RPG geek, like me).
But some pepole don't have time to make every city and dungeon a little graphic,so they use
the warp to a deistination system, but i like the feel of a world map myself.
-
It depends really. I think that its more realistic to only use a world map as a reference. But, if you are going for the Final Fantasy style game, World map would be useful.
-
I used to love world maps but now I'm not so sure... If you want epic airship travelling then world maps are unavoidable. If you want your game to have a more realistic feel then you might want to have big multi direction grassy dungeons between towns. That works better if the monsters are visible on screen, though.

Story-based: world map
Non-linear (I think that's the word for it) : No world map.
It all depends on what kind of game it is.
-
Did anyone notice this is in the RP section?
-
I was gonna say, but I thought I'd be nice...
...way to be a jerk, fisherson :P
-
...way to be a jerk, fisherson :P
I wouldn't say THAT ;P
-
Man, world maps, always...they're just all so awesome. Please, use world maps! I hate the point and click maps, they don't feel epic at all.
-
Really does depend. Final Fantasy 10 is my favourite ever RPG but has no world map, which makes it what it is. Yet I prefer world maps sometimes.
Really depends how the story is.
-
No world maps for me. Just maps with monsters walking around.
-
It also depends on how BIG of an area your character can actually set foot on. If it is a HUGE world. You may have some problems creating all those routes map wise.
-
Aye, kinda depends on what kind of game it is. If the player follows a specific "route" or if he can roam around and make side quests, visit different towns/dungeons that hasn't anything to do with the story. On the latter I would probably use a world map.
-
I don't like point and click maps either. They just take away from the sense of adventure. Anyways world maps are fun (if you don't have an excess of monster encounters) and they also make the game longer ( i dunno if thats good or bad). But I stink at making world maps.
-
No world maps. Make everyone walk through miles and miles of city streets and hillsides to get to their destinations. It's more realistic that way, and everyone knows how hard it must be for the characters to walk that far in mere seconds.
They must be sprinting like motherfuckers.

I think ff12 is reason enough why you should have a world map.
