Title: Are human villians better than non-human villians or is it the other way round?
Post by: Miss Muffet on July 13, 2008, 10:59:42 PM
I need your opinion. If you ignore his/her personality, would a human villian truly be better/more eviller (is that a word?) than a non-human villian like a demon or god or beast or monster or something? Apart from personality, looks, motives, etc... is there anything else that makes a villain a villain? Are there stereotypes on villainy?

Depends greatly. Most human villains are either power hungry or have a great feeling of being "incomplete" and thus must take their sorrow/anger out of the rest of the world.

Demons/Gods are more retro, less plot important, and easier to include in a story. They typically don't have a very important reason for doing what they are doing, and are just doing it for the hell of it.

Human villians work better in my opinion because they offer more to a story, and seem more defeatable/realistic than a God-like being.

Yeah. Like Sephiroth, my favourite villain of all. What about human villains turned to demons sorta like Nobunaga Oda from the Onimusha games?

Never played the Onimusha games...

All I know is that Nobunaga Oda was the leader of the Oda clan and a war hero/terror in Japan back in the days of the samurai.

Anyways, it's you're pick. Are you trying to make a game or something?

No. Yes. Sort of. I'm helping my cousins. They ask me for advice sometimes and I dunno what to say. Anyways, I still need to learn lots of things before I can make my own game.

Sephiroth doesn't quite fit human, given that he's all RAH I IS A GOD AND YOU IS MAH PUPPET. I think humans tend to be more relatable, thus becoming more than just scary things that need killing. It really depends. It seems easier to really hate a fugly demon than a human, but somehow the atrocities human villains plan out seem even more nefarious since they're so normal looking and seeming. It depends on the atmosphere you're looking for.

How about a god-like human (Very strong, powers, etc.) who splits in two, creating both a god and a human, with the god having the godlike ability's along with new ones with the human with normal strengths, that he would have as a normal human.

I know in my game there are two antagonists. One is human, the other is god-like but is still not immortal. The human antagonist is a typical power hungry ***hole. The god-like being is driven by his desire to return to a world he was cast out of, therefore he does not care what happens to the world he is in which is also the other, power hungry antagonist's world.

You can really make any kind of antagonist as long as the story behind them is good, that's what matters most. Just because the antagonist is a god or is god-like does not mean that he or she has less to relate to or is less capable of a deep story, it all depends on background story, the plot, motivational reasons, etc.

Villains are Villains. Human or not. My two fav. villains of all time are Luca Blight, who is a human but acts as a monster, and Fou-Lu, from Breath of Fire IV, who is a monster but acts as a human.

Anyone else notice this is in the RP Board? O_o?

I agree mostly with Grandy.

But really, God-like villains seem more cliché to me though.  And impossible to actually see how you are going to defeat them.  I mean unless you do the even more cliché, "You need to get a _____ in the dungeon/tower/forest of ____ in order to defeat him/her.".  But if you can find a good reason like Drenrin said, than it could work.

A nice bit of human who turns into a demon for the last boss is nice.

Really it completely depends on your game. Games like Disgaea, you're demons and you have to fight angels.

One of my ideas for a game involves animals all taking on humans.

Or you could have the boring cliche- Really good looking hero with an "I'll try my hardest!" personality,
7 crystals and a giant, evil demon.

Up to you. Try and make it original.
