Title: story idea
Post by: some_person on July 15, 2008, 08:49:58 PM
I have been attempting to make a story for my rpg, but I have no idea where to start. Would someone be kind enough to thik of a rough story outline that I can build on for my games story?

There are tutorials about that. Somewhere. On this forum.

I looked around and didn't find any. do you know where they would be?

What about a little girl falls into a well and her leg is broken.  While in the well, she discovers a door to another world and take it from there?

Unfortunately, we can't be your inspiration. Story is one of the most important things. Google writing prompts, maybe that will spark you, but "fantasy" is pretty vague. Construct something, a character, a setting, anything to start from, and then maybe I'll see if I can help. But you've really got to take the first step.

that sounds like a decent idea. But I have characters designed that I want to put in. I don't know how I'd manage with that story.

I have characters, but nothing else.

Hm...

True Phayre.

Why don't you try to build off that and post it here.  (In a spoiler if you must).  Maybe then we can help you a bit more.  Those who help themselves are apt to get help from others.

The story is mainly what makes it your game. Getting people to help you with your story's okay, but getting people to make the story for you is not. But well, that's just my opinion.
As mentionned, you need to take the first step. Work through your imagination to get a story base, and then after you can get help to maybe enhance it. But not to start it.

I'm going for a fantasy type story. the setting is meant to be similer to what its like in alot of final fantasy games. I am a huge fan of the old final fantasys and have been drawing gameplay and story ideas off them. for characters, I have People based off me, my girlfreind, and some of my best freinds. I also have some characters designed for roles that none of my freinds would fit into. I always put myself as the main character in my games. I am not very creative and have I hard time with the storys. I don't mind if they are overly cliche. I can Build off a small idea. But that is usually where I get stuck. I don't know how to start my story. or what the main goal should be.

Do what J.K. Rowling does. She writes the last chapter of her book firsth then builds from that. Find otu what awesome ending you want it have then say hey, this could happen before that, this before that an so on and so forth. I'm taking advanced writing and fiction classes in college and I've heard this sometimes helps people with limited creativity. The ending may not even be the same as you first imagined it, its just a way to build a story. And cliche isn't a very good thing if you want fans of your storyline.

I don't really need to consider fans. I'm proabily gonna be the only person who ever sees the game. I'm just making it as a pass time activity.

thanks for the idea of building from ending to first.

sadly, thinking about it, that doesn't really seem to help.

With what I'm thinking, I'm gonna have the hero's as normal people, I don't know how they take the role as "heros" yet. and the main cause would be based some of the final fantasys (mainly 2 and 6, my favorites) of a major military government trying to take control and attempting to stop it.

1. the main 4 heros(maybe not the final 4) living normals lives. they all know each other.
2. some evil nation(or whatver) starts to atack others and try to take control.
3. somehow the hero's become a major part of the rebelion(still need help here, how do they become involved, with imortant roles.)

I have more ideas to follow the story. but I'd feel stupid posting them.

I'm still brainstorming.

Well what tense do you want your story to be in?

Well, you seem to have an idea of what you want, at least.

You could start with the heroes having a normal life living in the country pf the evil nation, but they get conscripted into it's army and then eventually defect after witnessing it's evils and fight against it. That's a fairly good premise. The characters could get to know each other during their time fighting for the bad guys. Remember that it's war, so it's never clear cut.

that seems like a great idea.

Remeber though you need to come up with things from yourself though, or else your just the guy behind the keyboard whos typing from someone elses ideas. The whole satisfaction of making a game comes from when people like what you've created. And it wont be what you've created if someone else creates it.
