Title: Infinity: The Quest for Earth
Post by: Uberpwn_w00t on August 01, 2008, 10:10:09 AM
Everybody should know about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dn76lJ082I).

My jaw literally dropped. I'm not exaggerating. Then after I was done going gaga over it, I let out a nice, big "Holy ****."

This is truly amazing. The best part is: The project is not dead or dying. It is well underway, and making good progress. I'm going to **** my pants when this is fully released. For now I'll have to play the prototype. Which I'm downloading right now.

Official website (http://www.infinity-universe.com/)

What were your first impressions?

O_o holy be-jebus!

Its like the MMO Mass Effect. Definately one to watch methinks.

It's probably going to be better than Mass Effect.

Fly around in a (literally) infinite, randomly generated universe... Shoot down n00bs with Star Wars-esque laz0rz... Land on planets and ****... Talk with people so you don't get lonely while you're wandering about in space... Shoot at asteroids for a little retro fun...

Did I mention that this game is planned to be free? With a possibility that you may have to pay for extra features?

EDIT: I'm 85% done with the prototype download. Let's hope my computer doesn't keel over and start coughing up blood when I try to play it.

I do have some concerns tho:

If your ship gets destroyed you can do NOTHING until you are picked up by another adventurer: what if you are in a previously unexplored region?
Once SOMEONE finishes the main storyline no-body else can play it. Sort of defeats the purpose of a game doesn't it?
no mention of upgrading your ships, that means that guys with UBER-PWN skillz can be destroyed by one lucky shot from a noob???

Where did you read all that? o.o

In the features section.

Oh! You misinterpreted it. See, they're not talking about the main story line. They're talking about individual quests. I still don't know how they'd work that out... But... Anyway.

Where did you see the whole thing about "If your ship gets destroyed you can do NOTHING until you are picked up by another adventurer"?

EDIT: 99% of download! :D

Ahh, my appollywoggies XD

and as for the nothing, its in FAQ

What happens when your ship is destroyed ? Is there perma-death ?
When your ship is destroyed, your physical character will escape in a capsule pod. Perma-death does not exist; however, you will be unable to do anything until you are rescued.

I think NPCs would prolly handle rescues.

I'd certainly hope so.

The download is done. If I'm gone for the next few weeks or so, you know why.

Wow. Remember the game lag problems I've been having? I've told you guys about it.

Well, I'm 100% now that it's because I haven't updated the driver on this ancient thing since god knows when. Let's hope things start running smoothly now that I'm downloading the newest driver. Then I can finally test the damn prototype.

It looks a little like something I dreamed up a while ago. Looks like my evil scheme to enslave the world under one MMO is being undermined...!

None to shabby.

wow this is amazing, if they finish, I may very well become actively involved in an MMO for the first time.

EDIT: This turned me off a bit...

Is it possible to walk around your ship or in cities/stations/planets ?

No, this is not planned at the moment. It could add some depth to the gameplay, but would need a lot more resources and in-game content than a small independant team can realistically produce. We prefer to focus on space and planet surfaces and ship-to-ship fights/gameplay. Some vehicles (flying cars, shuttles, etc..) might be added, too.

Buuuut, it still looks really cool.

Looks kinda like Eve. Now, this is just me browsing around (too lazy to really look into it), but odds are, it's just an Eve clone (like I said it looks like). That's not a bad thing.

No. EVE is nonsense compared to this. I've downloaded the EVE trial and thouroughly played it.

To tell you the truth, EVE fails. The combat is a boring, typical MMO-styled point and click grind-fest. Everything is really empty and boring... You can't land on planets... You can't really even get near planets. You feel really alone and stuck... The PVP is terrible... It's just generally not good.

This game is what 3D space-shooter MMO fans are REALLY looking for. Not that silly EVE nonsense.

Anyway, on to the bad news. Last night I tried to download the newest driver for my graphics card... Didn't quite go as planned. The computer now only gets past booting up, and then the screen turns black. Everything is running fine, you can tell because you can hear the start up sound. Furthermore, if you grope around mindlessly and click around everywhere like a fool, you can actually accidentally click on the account icon and sign in. The point is, you can't see anything. It sucks. We're getting it fixed tomorrow.

I didn't get to play the combat prototype... :C

Sounds like you got one of two things. An entirely wrong driver, or a corrupted one.

I ****ing love this computer.

I got it fixed, and now it's running even better than it did before. The best part is, this thing is like... 8 years old. Heavily modified though. Still amazing. I'm going to see if I can run the prototype now.
