Bout 40% of the theads one the fist page of All of All ae locked. I know two were locked fo election easons, but it is still depessing.
This will polly get locked too. DISGUESS befoe that happens. Should unmod be bought back? No, but feel fee to suggest that.
-
That Archem should be banned? I don't think he would be too happy about that.
-
the mayoral threads were closed to keep things organized
the 1000 post game was cloased at the request of the topic starter....that the game itself had run its course and finished.
So thats three
-
I think we should lay off Archem, it stopped being funny. :/
-
Sage, Not-Spam and 10,000 Posts ran their course and then became filled with spam.
I'm gonna have to take the Responsible Moderator viewpoint here; Unmod had to be killed because people forgot the boundaries and the spam leaked into other places. If we have spam threads, it'll just happen again, the spam will stay there for a bit, people will get used to spamming, and everywhere else will drift off-topic.
It's all very well making a humorous off-topic comment at the end of a serious post, but when the post itself consists of two words and has nothing to do with anything, it makes you wonder.
The mod team are trying to keep the place clean so that we can have positive stuff going on. Say you're playing Harvest Moon - you go outside in the morning and the first thing you do is cut away all the weeds so they don't build up and you can't plant any crops.
Also, the Archem thing started off as a joke, folks just took it seriously. :P
-
...why was Sage closed, again?
-
It drifted off-topic (I'm not entirely sure it had a suitable topic to start with), I posted, when I came back to it about 10 minutes later it was locked.
By a mysterious benefactor who might have been Bluhman.

....Well, this drought of good posts'll probably pass. It is only Tuesday...

you've just answered a rhetorical question dude.

you've just answered a rhetorical question dude.
And that's a shame.
But still, once people get the message that spam doesn't need to be posted in a serious thread everything will be fine. Hopefully.
-
I didn't see any spam in "not spam",personally.I mean how is"Quick post somthing relevent!"
,considered spam?
-
"Quick post somthing relevent!"
Relevant to what? Thing is, the only way that thread could've gone was downhill.

Maybe,I still would have liked to see what whould have happed.
I mean I had a similar idea to archem's a while back.
About creating athread where it was ok to post what ever you wanted.
I mean, dosn't the rules say that the author can change the threads topic?
I think i read that some where.
-
The idea (which I decided to not elaborate on) was to create a thread where the topic could shift. So many threads go off-topic because one post leads to another, and the topic starts to shift severely. The topic doesn't really become spam, but the whole point is altered. I wanted to try and make something where that would be alright.
But then the Bluh killed it.
That's alright. I figure most people wouldn't know what I was up to, and it might have degraded into spam by the end of the page.
OMG, this page is already starting to shift! We're not lamenting over the depressing lock-spree!

You're not getting it. We had a place where you could post whatever you wanted. It was called Unmod. But the whole point of it was ruined because people forgot the boundaries between Unmod and the rest of the forum, and the spam started to leak out.
If you have a spam thread or any kind of area where spam is allowed, then the spam is almost encouraged, and it's going to spread. We can't have that.
As I've said, it's fine to put an off-topic sentence or two at the end of an on-topic post. It's not okay to post "lol" to boost your post count.

I know I'm going to regret typing this, but at this point, I don't even care anymore and I doubt you give a crap about anything I have to say anymore. I feel we have lost what 'spam' truly means. I must agree that all of these threads were locked for decent reasons, but it seems more like some were locked the instant spam occured. I'm sure a lot of those threads could've been left unlocked with simple redirection. It seems Dragonium and Bluhman are a bit hasty to lock. I'm not saying they're doing a bad job, they just need to maybe throw in a bit of direction against spam.
Spam is not our enemy, as it seems to have been pictured recently. It lets us connect a little more and become more of a community, we shouldn't try so hard to be rid of it, but instead only take of it when it becomes "too big." If a topic turns from cats to carrots, yes, that's bad. But when it turns from cats to pets in general, that's not too bad of a problem. A simple change in the thread name can fix the problem, rather than lock.
-
I haven't noticed locks over that kind of thing...

Stop doing that, seriously.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I hardly think that a thread which has no point to it whatsoever and has no topic of its own is going to be turned into something brilliant with a "keep it on-topic, guys". Likewise I don't reckon a thread which has had two pages of spam should continue after it's served its purpose. Perhaps only one of those threads could have been saved, but it had really run its course anyway.
The fact is before me and Bluhman were brought in everyone was saying "there's too much spam, the mods aren't strict enough", and now folks are saying the opposite. We're going to be strict until people get the message that AoA is not Unmod, and stop posting pointless things. End.

there is currently a topic called "THE OFF TOPIC GAME" and from what i gathered, you can post anything you want there.
Personally i think its weak and a convoluted way of trying to circumvent rules and get a quick lol at the recent stance toward spam but you'll notice its not locked, and its alive and well.
Posting for the sake of boosting your post count is lame. Not lame like "okay guys, quit breaking the rules its lame" I mean lame like "I have a level 70 paladin On the RP server, and thats where i met my girlfriend. Were going to meet IRL one day" but people seem to think it means something. It does not make you less of a n00b. Lurking the forums, and learning skills in RPGM Spriting coding and other game making related things does.
If you guys think our policies regarding spam are bad, perhaps you should look at the policies of some other forums.
If you guys want to have a 4chan painted blue, with charas written on it, its not gonna happen.
If you want Gaia online, im sure you can find the link somewhere.
three of the topics mentioned died of natural causes. the other two were locked because of general idiocy.
If you find it depressing that there is an abundance of ADHD around here, then do something about it, rather then complaining about it publicly.
The internet is not all that serious, contrary to public opinion. Neither is Charas. We have a selection of staff that volunteer to help out.
Those dude have a set of rules to follow, just like the members. If as a member, you feel the need to disregard those rules to be "the coolest dude on charas" and are suprised and/or depressed when the staff does their jobs and locks the thread, then you need to find better ways to pass your time.
For the record, The official policy is to try and help a topic get back on direction before any locking happens. We try not to lock needlessly.
Speaking from experience, as a new mod staff member, sometimes in the beginning you take things a bit seriously. You tend to lock something, or give warnings, as soon as rules are broke, because you want to be able to do "your job" well. They were enforcing the rules of the forum they moderate. Sure, in the future, we can hope that they do it a bit more subtly but for now, theyre still new to this.
Ed, nothing has been locked over such a small change as you have mentioned. I think part of you is just a lil bit spitefull over not being chosen for Mod or elected for mayor. I could be wrong, and Im not here to throw stones, but im not gonna beat around the bush.
You were prepared to full out leave the forums recently over something silly, correct?
I dunno, Ill just up. I will unquestionably be quoted and flammed over this, but honestly, this subject is dried out and overplayed.

(Preparing response to Dragonium....)

Personally, I think 10,000 posts could've turned around. Besides a few here and there, most posts were at least relevant.

You know me better than that.

Relevant only the background of the mod elections.

I'm outta steam. I'll leave that for later.

there were no mod elections Ed, not this time around
The admins chose Mods from a list of applicants, and we chose who we thought would be the most effective and active and reliable...
the preference of the members was not even taken into consideration. (at risk of sounding cold)
If past elections were the source of your turmoil, then you've done nothing but compare an apple to a watermelon
Also: the more angry you get for me Ed, the gaier i get for you.

To be honest, that was a typo. o.O
Meant to be mayor.
Bah, forget Dragonium. I'd better get out before I make this off-topic too.
On-topic: We.... must not post posts outside of the subject area.
-
Okay then, now it makes more sense.
I was beginning to question your short term memory

I like the cut of your jib.

You know what's really depressing? Having to read all that BS you guys have going on up there.
Seriously. And I choose to blame Ed.
-
Well, I guess we can lock this thread now.
... Haha, I'm just kidding. :P
-
No seriously I was quite pissed you lot had my thread locked.
It was supposed to be a thought provoking discussion on the longevity of Charas as a website and our dedication to it as members.
But bam, right out the window.
See that window?
Bam.
Right out it.

It is a game aimed to help people have fun; not a loophole.
As to most of this, I concu with Daggy. Seveal people felt the need for moderation, and now that it is being done complaints ae coming. Maybe the mods didn't need to lock the topic, pehaps a simple post of waning to get back on topic would've woked, but they ae just doing the job equested of the people.

moderation
Caught ya!

Sometimes I copy 'r' and paste it. I did the same in my original post with 'were'.

Like I'd believe that.
