So I've been playing with the idea of a modern-ish game, but I was wondering, would the idea of a game about a second Holocaust be too offensive? I mean, I've never been one for sun-shine-and-butterflies style game plots, but this seems like it might cross the line.
Opinions, comments, whatever, everything's nice.
-
Hmm..I'm cool with it. As long as there's good game play.
-
I like the idea, go for it.
However, if your using real countries, it would probably be best if it wasn't the Germans fault.
-
Hm. Glad so far no one objects. I don't see how it could be too offensive considering it more focuses on killing the entire species, rather than race, but I'd rather be careful with something as... 'delicate' for lack of a better word, as this.
I mean, in my eyes if people object to it they might as well object to nearly all video-games that exist, since the basic plot's the same, but eh, I'd rather not be seen as a monster XD
EDIT: Didn't even think of that.. Thinking about it, I'll probably either go with making the tyrannical super-power Russia, America or Japan, or just go the easy way and say that people have colonized Antarctica.
-
I'd do China or North Korea, I've always suspected them to do something like that, as they have been pretty close in the past.
-
Good idea, actually. First I'll have to figure out if its even worth it to start yet ANOTHER game before I get too far into detail with the actual plot, though.
-
Sounds good.
-
Great contribution XD
I dunno. Most likely, just to put any and all patriotic whiners in their place, the country will probably be over-thrown from within. Take no offense to that, I just meant people who think their country is God's gift to the world.
-
I'd say go modern but not with the "human race". I suggest making your own world where the rules of this world apply. That way, no risk of offending and you have more room to work with.
-
Thought about it. Wouldn't quite be the same, if you ask me. I mean, seeing a bunch of people struggle against a dictator in a place that doesn't exist won't be effecting you too much. I might be over-analyzing.
-
Just don't name real life races (ei. jews, africans, etc.) and it will be steller.

Well, it all depends on the story. In my opinion, if it's a good story, it won't matter if the place or people are real. And it's a bit cheap to get the emotional factor by using real life events in a fictional story. The emotional factor should come from events that people can relate to or understand, not from from references from historic-events, or atrocities. Though the two are similar, they are not the same. Hope that made some sense.
-
It did. As a whole I'll have to think about this for awhile, play with the idea.
-
Though this is only my opinion. I'm not trying to say a good story couldn't come out of your idea, just saying be careful, people get their panties in a bunch way too easy. =P
-
Not offensive at all. If people get offended by that it's because they are paranoid, not because you did anything wrong.
-
I consider this extremely offensive.
I also consider using cars offensive and am a strict vegan, mind you. I also hate anime and all forms of entertainment and computer games, because they encourage violence. Every last one.
Nah, go for it. I'm fine with it personally and from what other people have shown around here as far as games go, I don't think they'd be extremely bothered either.
-
It's not offensive, in my opinion. It's fictional! But some people tend to find everything too offensive...
I say, go on with your project, and if there's someone whining about offensiveness... just ignore him/her.
-
Who cares if it's offensive? The best way to make a point is to offend everyone. Tell your offensive story, make everyone uncomfortable for ignoring facts, and rule the world. In fact, exaggerate the horrors to make your point more palpable.
-
I am a black person and I find it offensive that a white player-character is sent to quell an outbreak of black zombies in Africa.
-
Make a game about neo-Nazis killing more jews. Call them that. This isn't for commercial use, you don't have to worry about the ACLU.
-
Yes, kill off more jews and your game will win.

HOLOCAUST EPISODE II: HITLER STRIKES BACK
-
Fire emblem did it in path of ridiance. The Daein rule blamed the Laguz and exterminated them blahblahblah, everyone in the country was tought that the Laguz were bad and demonspawns and some crap like that. So all the Daein troops was against those beastmen.
And no, it's not too offensive, how would it? But just not having jews could be a plus. Jews tend to whine about things in the past(personal experience) so just not use the word "jews". Use "Jedi" like star wars did or something.
And if you do, remember that there were a lot more people than the jews being killed, but people only mention the jews.
*Gives Uberpwn a Hitler masquerade mask*
-
True dat. Fire Emblem kinda focused more on a war than a mass slaughter of people/animals, but the same concept still applies.
-
Make us think it's Russia or China, but then twist it so apparently America started it.
(Ex. mass killing of Americans, discovering that a small underground group of Americans have been attacking foreign countries on their trips there for ages.)
-
I say Greenland should be the bad guys this time.
Also ed your sig is beyond win.
-
Don't blame it on Brazil either, we're peaceful and, generally, victims.
-
Was talking with Stu, and he gave me the idea that Britain might not be the effect, but rather they might be the trigger for everyone going bat-**** insane.
-
This is a cool idea. Also, I am recruiting more people to PM slaughter you. You're going down Dom.
-

I'm telling you man, the Olympics are eating our economy.
-
In my experience, there's far more people that speak up about a subject because they think it will offend someone than there are people who are actually offended by the thing. Or something.
-
Yeah. Like that GTA Hot Coffee class action lawsuit. In the end, only 2676 out of about 8.5 million owners of the game agreed to be a part of the lawsuit. The case was thrown out.
-
Maybe you'll make the news like those one kids did.
