Title: The Paranoia Disease.
Post by: Vlad Shadeu on August 18, 2008, 12:24:48 AM
EDIT: Here is the definition, figured it went here:

par·a·noi·a
–noun 1. Psychiatry. a mental disorder characterized by systematized delusions and the projection of personal conflicts, which are ascribed to the supposed hostility of others, sometimes progressing to disturbances of consciousness and aggressive acts believed to be performed in self-defense or as a mission.
2. baseless or excessive suspicion of the motives of others.

Original Post: After the mironic "casualty" (or "blessing" based on your perspective) and my experiences, as well as the other guy who did a "i'm leaving because you are mean" thread in the far past (and mentioned it on the moronic thread.) I begin to wonder: What causes these assumptions? i know you guys aren't jerks, for i have been around for awhile, i have a post count over 200, but seriously, WHY does everyone think we are jerks?

The simple answer is that Mironic was insane. Case closed. Let's try and forget that he ever came here.

This isn't really about moronic, really, just the odd effect we seem to have on newbies and why that might occur. if we fix this we may get more frequenters.

Typically we only drive away the nubz that come only for requests or to post a game that they started the day before.

Yeah, we should make a "Tips for Newbies" thing.

1) A little grammar goes a long way. If you can spell and construct sentences properly, you will be accepted much more readily.
2) Don't post your game unless it's actually decent. We have a high level of professionalism and poor quality games will get you flamed.
3) Likewise with resources.
4) Make sure your posts go somewhere, don't go needlessly off-topic. Likewise, use the Edit button.

And such and such.

It's not paranoia, but I know for experience that people new to forums tend to think the older member look down on them.

Take me for example, in my first, second and third posts I topic kicked, in my fourth post I caused the good old Quote bug. I couldn't help but think people would hate me once I realised what I did.

Still, I lurked around and managed to build myself a reputation.

I just think most of our new members can't take criticism. It must be the way people are these days, all egotistical bastards. I don't think we're being mean at all. If anything, we're limiting the RPG Maker community to just people who are actually willing to put effort in their games and are willing to make changes based on others' opinions.

Using Mironic as an example, I don't think we could have been nicer to be honest. We answered requests, listened to him, corrected him politely... As far as I can tell we're all angels.

Age has a lot to do with it I suppose.

I thought we did that a long time ago...

I do, but that's because I don't want them to look up to me. I'm a bad role model.

Yeah, we should make a "Tips for Newbies" thing.

They don't read the rules to begin with, doubt they would read this.

But then again, it would be VERY useful as something we could throw at them and say "Hey, read this".

I thpught paranoia was more like fearing something rather than merely thinking it may go wrong.

I wouldn't say that definition fits perfectly. If anything, we're simply cautious of others because we know the warning signs of n00bs. Cautious IS borderline paranoia, but paranoia is described as a "mental disorder" or "systematized delusions". I am doubtful that anyone on charas is scared shitless to log on unless the supposed n00b is battered into the state of outcast via firing squad.

I WAS the paranoid one, thats what is making me say this all. i've been in the state that two other members (at least) have already felt that they were hated or that people we being mean to them when they werent. Now i've been here and know you guys are my friends (even though Archem probably doesn't think i'm his, based on the way hes been talking to me recently.)

Archem talks that way to everyone. EVERYONE.

And it is rather nice talking, I might add.

I remembered Archem as being a little... nicer.

Well anyway he still rocks.

Any more thoughts on the disease?

I'm still nice! I'm just coating my words with a little cynicism and a bit of sarcasm!

Well, a bit more.
