Well well, someone figured it was a good idea to create a black hole on earth... A 17 mile particle accelerator tube that will create these cosmic rays, it cost a fortune and they might create a black hole? Am I the only one having doubt if it's safe to do?
Well, I hope I'm wrong or the world will slowly dissappear on tuesday... Would be a shame.
-
...Niiice. Can't wait.
-
Oh God, Large Hadron Collider stuff again.
It's meant to give a small simulation of the Big Bang. It's not going to destroy the Earth. Even if it does make a black hole, it would be so small that it would probably be able to swallow a sock at most, and it would decay within seconds. I read somewhere that even if the Sun were to suddenly turn into a black hole, we'd still be able to orbit it. It's pretty harmless. At the worst it'll destroy France and Switzerland. Win-win.
The press is full of bull. It's really nothing to be worried about, but because there is an infinitesimally small chance that it might do something dangerous, the media blew it way out of proportion. It has more chance of turning the sky into rainbow patterns and summoning dinosaurs with hats.
Sorry to rage, but I've had too much of people bawwing about it.
ITP: Facts.
-
Yeah, I don't watch TV, so I didn't hear about it. Pretty much figured it was bullshit though.
-
Anyone who thinks that this experiment will be that dangerous is seriously underestimating the amount of planning that these scientists have had to do.
I mean... An experiment that costly can't afford to go wrong. This thing will have been planned down to a ridiculous amount of detail.
The best part about me and Stu's posts is that if we're wrong, you won't be able to throw it in our faces :p
-
I guess you're right. I could live without France if it fails. It's just that I hope they are right about the black hole that might appear won't be able to grow.
But what if it does? That's my worry. They can't be certain since it's the first time they're doing it. And it would feel kinda lame if the black hole would grow and devour our nice planet.
Would've expected a nuclear war or enviromental disaster to take us out and not some scientists trying to recreate big bang...
-
I have an idea. Since we're all on different parts of the globe, we should make sure everyone in different areas posts here on Tuesday. I will be the northeastern US representative. :P

A black hole is formed when a large object collapses in on itself. If the object is big or heavy enough, it'll collapse into something so dense it basically has infinite gravity. Generally this'll only happen if the object is freaking huge, like double the size of our Sun. There is no massive object being used in the LHC, just air particles and such. Not even the LHC is big enough to form a black hole if something goes wrong. Therefore, a black hole cannot be formed, and even if it did, it'll be tiny. Stupidly tiny.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I do A-Level Physics.
-
So what?
-
Owned.
Earth-wise.
-
:p They're not even going to be thinking about the destruction of the world, Lucas. They'll make sure it goes perfectly so that they get results before their equipment breaks.
-
I saw a program on this today and trust me they know hat they ae doing, Do you acually think they would allow them to do an exeriment that would wipe out man kind and the planet, i highly doubt it
-
As much as we'd all like to entertain the idea of the world's destruction to science, the probability of anything happening is so infinitesimally small that any sources stating that something WILL happen is just a load of alarmist propaganda.
YAY LONG SENTENCE
-
I'm tired of the Collider doomsday stuff. The odds are so abysmally small that it doesn't matter. Black holes are STILL purely theoretical, so the odds of theoretically creating a theoretical anomaly is ridiculous.
-

Why do we have to live in the same area?
(Don't we live in the same state? I don't remember...)
Oh well. I'm kinda in the same boat as prpl. I guess

Haha yeah, AFL, we do live in the same state. Oh, well, we'll dual represent! By the way, wasn't it crazy having a tornado warning and all? Or are you further west PA?
-
I don't know what you're suggesting, but I'm the resident Texan.
-
I guess I'll represent Southern California :/
-
Ill be representing scotland
-
Uhh.... Can I be the third Northeastern US Rep?
Guess my state for a cookie. Shouldn't be hard...
EDIT: The text re-sizer not working...
-
Sure. I'm gonna go ahead and guess... NJ?
-
Well, I don't see what is so bad about it, if it destroys us, or anything similar. We are destined to meet our end, so does it really matter how, and when, it comes?
To coaster: Nope, there is a clue on this site, quite obvious when you see it. Another clue, would be... I am ashamed, and embarrassed, of this state's judicial system.
-
uh...
NY?
I don't get the judicial reference. Sorry.
-
Close, but no.
The legal system is what I meant. One, two, or three (I don't remember) years, or so, specifically...
Child molestation laws are pretty pathetic.
-
MA?
-
No...
To keep this short... I'll tell you the location of the first clue. Just to get rid of my raging clue... (South Park reference...
The Off Topic game.
-
Eh, nevermind it. This is taking up too much space.
-
A black hole would be great for getting rid of waste.
-
(Don't we live in the same state? I don't remember...)
PA
****! I gotta get outta here! They're on my tail!
-
Sorry. I JUST read all of the first post and JUST read the most recent post and really didn't know what to figure from it.
-
****! I gotta get outta here! They're on my tail!
!
...Well, nice to know that I wasn't the only one that heard this story.
-
If we DO die in a black hole, that means we'll be able to go through Spaghettification (i.e., stretched by gravitational forces), and Stephen Hawkings will finally be proven right...or wrong.
Eh, if we die, at least I had it coming.
-
[badjokegshagfyre]A brief of history of time may be briefer than we expected =O[/badjokegshagfyre]

To get back on the Large Hardon Collider, you have to remember that CERN practically invented the Interwebs, or at least someone who worked at CERN invented HTML and such. They basically administrate the Internet.
You can't go wrong with the administrators of Interwebz.

Have you SEEN the internet lately?
It's all trolls and porn.
-
Trolls, porn and sexy men.
-
I'm a little bit of all three.
-
Have you SEEN the internet lately?
It's all trolls and porn.
And? What's so bad about that?
What else would I do on the internet?
-
yea...We made it through the fail
-
They moved the launch till tomorrow.
http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html
-
Fun fact: tomorrow they're firing a stream of protons in one direction only. They don't start introducing protons in the opposite direction, and thus causing collisions, until mid-October.
Sorry to kill your buzz, but nothing is going to happen for a while yet.
-
Apparently the scientists working with the LHC are now recieving death threats. That's a shame.
-
Oh really? Are the senders gonna kill them after the black hole? Will they still kill them in the likely event that there's no black hole? This sounds poorly planned out.
-
No, we're going to kill them before.
-
This is all rather anti-climactic...
-
The machine is online, and it looks like we're still alive! of course, the collision won't take place for a few weeks, so I wouldn't hold your breath.
-
Whoopee. I bet nobody knows or cares about what this whole thingamy is doing. And by "nobody", I mean "95% of all people". They only care about the black hole part that the media's since spun out of control.
-
Damn why couldn't it end today? I have to have a ****ing presentation at school :/
-
Well there we go we all yet again survived another "Doomsday"
-
The problem with the black hole theory is that the entire particle accerlerator is a vaccuum, kept at just above absolute zero. Even if a micro black hole to appear, it would have no matter to absorb and almost no energy about whatsoever, and would most likely collapse on itself in a matter of nano-moments. Of course, that might attenuate the whole 'reality' and 'space-time' thing, but I wouldn't worry about that too much. Most likely, that would only make things better, like if the place started flooding with gasoline. Or uranium. Idunno, that last part was actually bullshit.
BTW, thanks you Archem for actually responding to one of my posts. That just doesn't seem to happen much anymore.
-
You're welcome?
-
Hey, guess what guys?

Wow, that sucks.
-
"In the name of science" is not a phrase you acknowledge, is it?
-
lets hope it destroies france only >__<[/s]
Oops...I thought this was a new topic..not a renamed one!

Introducing, from two weeks ago - Felix! *Applause*
-
what did I do wrong THIS time
Nva mind....
I honestly think a black hole is improbable....BUT they theriosed(mispell) that
IF(big if) a black hole would be made it would take around 4 years to swallow the earth
Year 2008+4=2012(which = The Predicted end of the world)
