Title: Gauntlet V: Charas Edition
Post by: loftyD on December 01, 2008, 11:44:38 AM
For those who are fans of the original Gauntlet Series. I'm going to be making a Gauntlet fangame on rm2k3, and the characters will be obviously Charas Members.

So the question is, do you want to appear in this game? If you do, please make a charset of you and a faceset. (I do not need battlesets due to there will be no fighting.)

The maximum number of characters will be 8.

If you want to be in the game send your charset and faceset as a reply to this topic only :D

Thanks

I think this should be in "games".

Anyway it sounds interesting. Since I'm an attentionwhore I might join if there is any room left when I get home.

What will the battles be like? Like the original gauntlet or something?

I'll join though.

thx Prpl Mage. Yer, it will kinda be like the original Gauntlet Series. I've developed a Health bar system, so I'm pleased with that. There will be different 'worlds' with different monsters for you to kill. The objective will probably be to save the queen / princess.

Here's my charset. I'll get you a faceset later.

EDIT: Added Faceset.

Wow. What's with the sudden interest of making a Charas-based product? Haven't we tried several times before and failed? Oh well, I'm sure we will someday have one. Maybe someday soon.

Think I may want in this, but I'll probably submit Foxy instead of Chicken Man. :/

u forgot face set. and nice charset heh
Well, given that I'm requesting to be an enemy, I didn't figure that a face set would be necessary. However, if you really want one, I can whip one up in no time. It's pretty much just a semi-circle on a box with eyes, after all.

EDIT: Done. I opted to go for the creepy stalker style. I think it suits me.

It does. I still think your creepy, female, alter ego is following me... *looks around room* I blame Ed, he created it...

Anyway, here is the charset...

I've done a basic character selection event. I just have a small query? Can the event <Show Choices> be copied so you can have up to 8 choices as 1 <Show Choices> has up to 4?

Well, It's not that hard to make a cms where you can choose between characters... There should be a great amount of tutorials to aid you in this. If not I guess I could try to explain how to do it. But I'm not so good at explaining codes :/

And also why is this in All of all. It's clear he's making a game. I'm not trying to minimod or anything (yes, I know that's exactly what I'm doing) I just finds it strange.

Some screenz, these are prior to Felix joining :D
(http://www.loftyd.net/images/GV.PNG)
There are RTP Horses there to make sure that the HP bar was working, the treasure chest was the MP bar validator, at the time I hadn't implemented that.

This screeny is intended as a double parody. Firstly as it's a map rip off my KJ series which Dominicy played and the stage is called Knight's Dungeon.

Testing the lightning when you press shift, the MP Bar changes too :D

This isn't a dis to your game. It looks good so far. And no dead Growlithes. I'm intrigued.
I'm just wondering why there are so many Charas-related games.
Is Charas really that awesome? I don't see this a lot on other RPG Maker forums, the whole each-of-us-is-a character-on-Charas thing.
It's kind of cool, and interesting to see how people decide who's in and who's out.
Nice screens so far, by the way. Keep at it. I adore finished games.

That's because we are so damn awesome. We leave for some while but we can't help coming back here.

And Charas-based stuff is great because it appeals to the members of charas(us).
I've had my own charas-based projects. But because the lack of work I've decided to not even tell the community about it.

Title: Re: Gauntlet V: Charas Edition
Post by: Archem on December 05, 2008, 10:24:59 AM
That's fine. I was totally satisfied with holding the position of Death, but that's just fine, too.

However, I'm starting to see that my sprite isn't jiving well with the general art direction, so I may need to make a new one that fits better.

Dude, this looks pretty sweet, You know there's ways to make this multi-player, well 2 player, but requires unneeded amount of Variables,
Title: Re: Gauntlet V: Charas Edition
Post by: loftyD on December 06, 2008, 10:17:54 AM
Felix: Thanks matey, I had a look at 2 player stuff, but ye you're right in saying it needs lots of variables...
Archem: Your ghost sprite is ok, but if you want to make enemies, thats fine. all I need from you is to either have Band A or B

Band A: When monster is killed 1-10 HP is taken off you.

Band B: When monster is killed 25-70 HP is taken off you.

So I know how strong the monster should be :D

Title: Re: Gauntlet V: Charas Edition: Out soon!!!
Post by: loftyD on February 03, 2009, 02:55:25 PM
Okey, the game is done, I just want to give a brief outline on what everything is/does.

**Controls**

Arrow Keys : Movement
Shift : Activates Magic (Uses 20 MP) , Choice of: Fire,Water,Wind or Lightning. It is possible to change your magic ability at the Forest of Heroes House.
0 Key : 360 Heal Warp (Uses 80 MP)
1 Key : Temporary Speed Boost (Uses 80 MP)
^Note: Do not use the Speed Boost when you have less than 80 MP, it seems to go funny, as soon as you get MP, it will stop.

**Items**

Wolf Amulet: The main item you must collect on your journeys. Don't sell these as you need to get 10. There are only 10 located in the game!
Unknown Treasure: One of the items you must collect on one of the stages.

I shall put up my review of this later, once I actually play it, and possibly beat it

Graphics: The mapping is sub-par, to say the least.  The better half of the game I was just following a fairly non-linear path, hoping I didn’t leave anything behind.  Hell, I didn’t even realize there was a world map until I took a look into the game’s database to refresh myself for this review.  It was fairly easy to lose yourself on the map, unless you were paying close attention to where you came in and out of, there was a painfully good chance that you’d forget there’s even a doorway there, at times.  This is particularly a problem at the very beginning and the very end, when you are leaving and returning to the Forest of Heroes.
2/5

Sound: There’s a lack of it.  Well, more like any variety to it.  Off the top of my head, there’s the lightning, fire, water and wind magic sounds, healing, attacking, swimming, and haste.   The voice-over intro was a nice touch, but if you read too quickly and skipped to the next, you were stuck with the voice overlapping itself with its next line.  Not much fun, listening to upwards of four different voices at once because you read too quickly.  The music was good enough, wholly from the Gauntlet 2 soundtrack, if I’m not mistaken.  I have no problem with that, other than the same problem I had with the music when it was from Gauntlet 2, and the same problem I have with the sound in this game.  There’s no variety.  It gets tiring after awhile – notably when you’re humming the songs to yourself while you play.
2.5/5

Gameplay: The meat of the experience, despite the bland flavor it might be.  Every time an enemy dies, a message informing you of how much damage you took interrupts the game.  That might be bearable if the entire messages would appear at once, rather than scrolling the text.  I’ve always hated that you can’t just skip messages with a keystroke – but I digress, as that’s more a problem I have with RPGmaker, not the game.  Regardless, I’ll heal when needed; I don’t need to be told how much damage I’m dealt, just to be sure I remember.  Almost feels like the game is babying me, but that just might be a symptom of my cryptic way of thinking.
Speaking of healing, I played with a gamepad, which the glitch spell-casting might be credited to in this case.  I’d say I have a justifiable distaste for the spell system, though, when healing costs thrice it’s alleged cost of magic, because the first two times the coding didn’t pick up on my incrementally more frantic button-pressing.
2/5

Difficulty: The game is a cakewalk, as long as the semi-inept user interface decides to have mercy on you and register your frivolous “I NEED HEALING NOW” punching of your keys.  Really that’s all you’ll need to beat the game – a just-right-timing button finger and a bit of luck.  The rest is smooth sailing – and I don’t like it when my victory depends on the game’s random-number-generator damage calculators.
1/5

In closing: It was fun, albeit increasingly confusing experience.  Best played side-by-side with a friend, seeing who can finish first, but even then it could have survived a good polish.  A good enough, thankfully short arcade-sort of game, weighted down by glitchy spell-casting and and a cumbersome battle-system.

...

The Just: It's presented fairly nicely, though it's lacking... I love the outdoors army smashing.

The Me: I swear... That mountain range at the end was just to make whatever playable experience was left in the game unbearable... Honestly. Oh, and that Knight's cave place, one key... So much as touch the wrong door and it's game over due to inability to leave or open the right door.

The Jerk: If I wanted to play a game about running into things, I would've picked up something fun.
