In all seriousness, though, will Barack Obama have more influence as a president or a race? There is only so much a man can do in a term of presidency, but as a symbol he will go down in history, as the first non-white president. The world will remember him. Children will grow up knowing that they are not excluded from office due to their race. Question is, is that reason enough to elect/endorse him?

Logically? No. But given the history of American oppression, it's a very good thing. Now African Americans can start to realize that this IS an era in which they are not oppressed, at the very least, by their own government. There will always be racism, but it's popularity is shrinking.
If he can deliver on what he says he can, it will only make him that much bigger. But people will most likely remember him only as the first black president of America.

On topicish: big deal? I don't think so. Last time I checked, the United States was the land of opportunity, not the land of oppression (Drenrin). As far as I'm concerned there doesn't have to be an election to symbolize that. The added fact that a staggering majority of blacks voted for 'BrObama' still begs the question as to what really defines racism.

Obama holds and displays understanding for the needs of the black community in America arguably more than any president in history. It is only to be expected that people vote according to their circumstance.

Well, I've actually heard that the black race is starting to disappear due to them breeding with other races.
There was a lot of controversy in this one what with old women unplugging voting machines, finding at least 75,000 Obama tickets in the trash, that one guy naming his son Hitler and racists voicing their opinions on how to kill Obama.

Are we being serious or sarcastic right now? If serious, yes, America does rock. I googled all those 'controversial issues' and found zilch on the first two (feel free to point me to any news articles or properly cited blogs). By the way, the 'racists plotting to kill Obama' are generally skin-heads; which would be the equivalent of me looking at all blacks as if they were black panthers(unless I'm misinterpreting you), so while you're trying to 'expose' racism you're really just playing the racist yourself, accidentally or otherwise.
Red, the only commonalities of blacks I know of are a high black on black crime rate and a high abortion rate. It doesn't really take a rocket scientist to understand those issues; to solve them; however, might be a different story. I'm not sure how the president has demonstrated his understanding of the needs of blacks other than being black, so again, it does become an issue of 'skin-identity'.

Are we sure we want to call a high abortion rate a problem? Personally, I love the idea of abortion, and the fact that the option is being used to its fullest potential has me ecstatic! Freedom of choice is a beautiful thing, no matter what anyone else may think (and besides, freedom is the most prominent founding ideal of this nation).

Archem, I think that the rights and freedoms of America's defenseless unborn should be protected as well. Unfortunately for me, a panel of judges decided that you're right and I'm wrong. Regardless of whether or not it's 'bad', it's a commonality among blacks. Communities are based upon commonalities, and besides the obvious (taste in music?) those are the only commonalities I'm aware of. Definitely not something a community should be built off of, unless, of course the idea of a community is just as empty as those commonalities.
Midnight, I'm going to have to take your word for it, even though I find it quite hard to believe. I think I just come to these forums at the most horrible timings, because I end up getting involved in a 'political' based thread and I really tend to be adversarial when it comes to 'political' stuff. I probably shouldn't have even posted in this thread in the first place! So you guys just do your thing.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's any more alive than sperm at the point where it's still legal to abort. Sure, it has the full potential for life, and sure, it's at a stage where it's developing, but it's still not a person. It lacks a personality, it lacks features, it lacks any defining characteristics. Hell it doesn't even have a gender! It's not capable of doing anything on its own, either. It's basically a recovering vegetable.
Which reminds me, I don't consider a person in a vegetated state to be alive anymore, either. They sure can't argue with that, can they?

Setting aside that it is a very common subject in his speeches and elsewhere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreams_from_My_Father), since when has first hand experience not been a good indicator of understanding? If I am a part of a community it's safe to expect that I understand what being part of that community is like.
To say America is a land of equal opportunity is dandy, but there is a difference between a position and a destination. There is racism in USA, and it does no-one justice to deny it. Three quarters of the country is white, so even if racism is of equal prevelance across the board, white racists would outnumber black racists 6 to 1. Equal rights for blacks is a recent developement. The time when the front of the bus was white-only is no distant relic of history, it is living memory, and we are still clawing our way out of it's shadow.
Maybe we should make a seperate abortion topic. I personally think the laws in my country (UK) are a little iffy, but essentially I have no problem with it provided the "child" (Obviously not a child, but we are in dire need of a term to use here) has not yet developed capacity for suffering. Of course, if one is taken to the idea of a God-given soul, the debate takes vastly different ground.

Not really, white people tend to do interracial relashionships less because they are racist. So all races but white will become mixed.
Whites are not the most insulated of races (Probably the opposite, in fact), and they're by no means in the majority. More likely, everyone will become chinese or mixed.
