Title: Does anybody else...
Post by: Tainted Storm on February 06, 2009, 09:32:34 PM
...think that linux sucks.

I mean I'm using it right now, and it kinda blows.
What's windows like?

Used Linux, not too happy bout it. But then again, I'm used to Windows. Can't judge it in comparison to something else, so ask the next person.

I've been wanting to try it out, since I only hear good things about it, but I haven't taken the time out to learn how it works.

Still rockin' Windows XP over here.

Vista sucks
Linux rocks (if you're a geek, like me)
Mac has no relevance to this topic
End of story

You can do many wonderful things with Linux once you learn it.
Windows will possibly work well with anything you're trying to do.
Mac is like Linux with cooler graphics and less awesomeness than windows.
Vista is like Mac but without the graphics.

should I get xp or stay with ubuntu?

Depends
Do you want to spend money?

If not, stick with Ubuntu, and look up some stuff online to help you
I would recommend something that I believe is called Wine, that can play Windows .exe's
Theres also alot more things that you can get, almost all of which are free

If your fine spending a bit of cash (or getting the files online, and burning 'em to a cd) then you might want to get XP...seeing as almost every program out there is compatible with it

Well, it's not so easy to find XP now that Vista's about town, and it will only get harder as Windows 7 nears "completion", and since I know very little about the OS in question (as mentioned previously), I can't really say which one would be the better pick, but I can say that XP is pretty damned user friendly, easy to learn the ins-and-outs of, is highly supported (mostly because it's a last-generation Windows-based OS), and is perhaps the most widely used casual OS as of now.

Well, Vista's slowly taking over that title.

Unfortunately

Vista sucks

Even though that's what I'm using
Albeit heavily modded, software wise

three words.

Vista. Sucks. Balls.

Here's a few reasons why:

1: My snes emulator wont work on it
2: None of the old C&C games play on it
3: My usb-based programs arent compatible; i have to reinstall them on the computer itself
4: IT DELETED THE RTP FOR 2K3! THAT IS NOT COOL!

I must say that, when used properly, Vista isn't that bad. Granted, I doubt I'll be changing my OS over to it any time soon, but since my brother, sister, and dad all got their own computers over the past month and a half (my dad recently got a laptop. My sister got one, too, and my brother got a good desktop computer. The latter were Xmas gifts), and I've been forced to learn it quickly to compensate for their combined computer-illiteracy.

It's really nowhere near as bad as what all the internet has to say. If you've got problems, either you're using it wrong, you're using the wrong versions of something, you're an idiot, or you're using something that's been difficult to operate anyways for the past few years, but can still be run with the proper 3rd party apps.

But I'd still recommend an older MS OS.

Same here, with everything above, surprisingly
Like, almost to the word
Except with the family stuff

Spend money? How many time do I have to remind you that spending money on software is 100% optional.

Spend money? How many time do I have to remind you that spending money on software is 100% optional.
Unfortunately, there's also the awful social stigma of not paying when appropriate. That is also optional, and comes packaged with all available units of "didn't pay for". Next time a company that you love for some reason dies because, despite all their fine products, nobody supported them by purchasing their wares, you can't sit about, scratching your head, wondering "why?". You lose any right to complain.

Now for the hypocrisy: I pirate more than my fair share of files. Do I feel morally unsound? Somewhat; I intend to buy (with money) anything that I enjoy, assuming that it's still possible to do so (good luck getting that legit copy of Baldur's Gate at the local Wal*Mart). Do I have a legit copy of each Megadeth album? Getting there. Do I actually own Red Faction? Not for PC, I don't (then again, that's awfully hard to find). Do I plan to purchase Disney's Fantasia? You bet your ***. I'm surprised they haven't been re-releasing it every four years. I'd have three copies by now (two on DVD!).
