Never managed to beat it, but I had a blast playing up to shortly after Moonside. The game is great, and so is the music. And I'l totally name my newborn kid "Poo".
Also, old RPG games, like Earthbound and Mother 3, you know, cult classics, let's discuss them. Any other you guys feel like sharing? I really can't remember many, most likely because I just got into RPGs with a near-lethal injection of Chrono Trigger and Suikoden II, both of which are too recent.

Earthbound was a wonderful game. For me, it lived up to its hype perfectly. It had such charm, such magic. You can't find that in games these days.
-
I think it's because it didn't try to be beautiful, only good.
-
I remember playing it long ago, but not for long. It's for the NES, right? I should see if I can get my hands on it.
-
SNES, actually.
-
Ah, gonna be on the wait list for getting it then. Don't own a SNES at the moment, plan on getting one in the summer when I can work a bit more.
-
I've been trying to play it on an emulator for my DS, but the graphics get all messed up. I don't want to look at eBay, as I know how much that's gonna cost.

That's what I'v been doing. But the souns is also sucky, and sound is a very important issue in a game for me.
-
Oddly enough, I too tried playing it on my DS for a while.

Earthbound was very "love it or hate it." The random crap that happens in that game made a lot of gamers reject it. That's why Earthbound is more of a cult classic than a legend. If it was less weird it would have been more accepted, but if it was less weird it wouldn't have been so freaking cool.
If I have to make one complaint about it, it's extremely linear. There's no sub-questing type stuff at all. Once you've completed the storyline up to the final boss, there's pretty much nothing to do other than putz around or go fight him.
Best interactive ending though. If I ever finish an RPG, I want to make the ending sequence like Earthbound's.

This is some of the reason why I hated the game. Also, I wished I could delete some select songs from existence. Battle music was atrocious.

I played Killer7. Weird does not bother me in the slightest.
-
I finally got a consistent GFX setup for Earthbound, so I'm playing it again. ;)

I never really cared for Earthbound, but I just recently started playing Mother 3, which I believe is miles better.
"But Warxe," you ask, "Mother 3 is Japan-only!" Well, if you do a little bit of searching on Google, you can find a way around that...

I sort of agree. Earthbound was amazing, but Mother 3 was... more amazing.
-
I decided to myself that I wont do the third Mother before bounding my earth.
-
Other than a couple of recurring characters (sadly, Ness and friends don't make an appearance), Mother 3 is totally self-contained. You don't need to have played Earthbound for it to make sense.
Also, has anyone here played the original Mother? Thematically, it's a lot like Earthbound, but I actually believe it has a slightly stronger plot, and it fills in a few gaps in Earthbound.

Can't find it in english.

Oh, it does, really--you learn more about Giyga's past (and, oddly, his name was...Gigue...), and learn of the possible past of Ness' mother and father...
Also: Giygas has the coolest attack and music ever.
YOU CANNOT GRASP THE TRUE FORM OF GIYGA'S ATTACK!
Now that I think about it...I wonder who would win in a fight: Giygas, or Lavos...? I mean, we can't grasp the true form of Giygas' attack, but Lavos makes destruction rain from the heavens...
-
Giegue/Giygas are the same character. But the American translators decided that "Giygas" was a more Americanized name than "Giegue", and that it more accurately represented the character. Or something like that, anyways.
Also, Giygas would kick Lavos' ***. Lavos was defeated by three kids, a frog, a robot, a cavewoman and an emo sorcerer, where it took the combined power of the entire planet (and the player) to defeat Giygas. So unless Lavos could use the Spirit Bomb, he'd eventually die.
-
So unless Lavos could use the Spirit Bomb, he'd eventually die.
But...at the end of Crono Cross, he was still drifting somewhere in the Timestream, i.e., ALIVE...
BETTER IDEA! What if...Giygas possessed Lavos?!
-
Then, my friend, we'd be f**ked. And not just the game characters, either; Giygas-Lavos would probably find a way to cross over into the real world and devour us all.

You mean...like in the ending for the arcade version of Golden Axe?!
T_T
or worse, if the Dream Devourer fused with Giygas. Not only would we be f**ked, the entire time stream would be f**ked.
lol I said Mother, not Mother3,
Isn't the English translation of Mother 1 dubbed Earthbound Zero? I have an Earthbound Zero ROM for NES and it works, so I assume that would be Mother 1. :/
-
K. Going after it.
-
Also, Mother 3 is awesome. Just got up to Chapter 4, and it's getting better with every minute. Definitely recommend it.
-
I love the Mother games. They're so strange yet so awesome. :D I've beaten the first one, in the middle of the second, and just started the third. Has anyone tried the unused boss battle in Mother 3? IT DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS! But it's worth a look.
-
Unused boss battle? Does that have anything to do with
those crazy distorted images of Claus screaming that I keep seeing on Youtube?
-
Yeah, that's the one.
