yes, give me grief for the pokemon factor. i dont care.
Ive finally settled on a side project, but before i commit, ill need a few basic things. check the Requests thread if you'd be willing to help.
I liked the whole "human becomes a pokemon" plot, but it also raised a few "what if so-and-so became a pokemon?" So this gave rise to multiple fanfic stories back in the day (most of them garbage) but i decided to dig up one of my betters, make it suck less, and convert it to rpg form. this is just a very general plot summary, and ill make an official post once ive got some basics down (im just posting this here for idea feedback, if you like it, dont like it, or have suggestions, let me know.)
PS: If you don't like pokemon or have absolutely no interest in this game, please just dont post.
Very brief summary: Follows a very intelligent scientist working for a private research company who is transformed into a pokemon. He tries to find out why he transformed while allying with others, both human and pokemon. At the same time, he is forced to deal with various crises that threaten both his old human and his new pokemon allies. Preferably with a turn-based engine for either XP or VX. The hero is a brilliant scientist, and a bit of a workaholic. The player doesn't capture pokemon, but gets fixed allies over the course of the game. One special feature is that, eventually, the player's party members gain the ability to change between human & pokemon forms at will, with specific advantages for both.
if this seems like a bad idea, i can scrap it and find something else. i can understand that a lot of people dont like pokemon, and while im not an avid fan myself, it does offer some interesting opportunities...

Interesting idea, switching between pokemon and human sounds good, it's just, a pokemon game where you can't "Catch them All" as it were just seems like needless lip service. If you're not going to go the whole hog, just make an original game. I don't know why people feel compelled to create fan-games.
Also, this should have been posted in the Games forum.
-
i didnt post in "games" because its still a very early concept and doesnt really count as a "game" yet.
Also, i want to incorporate a catching system, but it might feel odd with the game's style...oh well, ill figure something out. Any suggestions? (Remember, you're playing as an ordinary human, NOT a trainer.)
-
Didn't realize it was in all of all, you could probably get a mod to move it if you want, or just post a new topic
The whole werewolfish concept sounds interesting, however
Also, since he's technically not a trainer, I'd go against the whole catching thing
-
It's just, in my opinion, if you're going to use the pokemon brand without actually incorporating pokemon catching or anything, why bother? You could make your own original game if you wanted, you know? About a group of people who can turn into animals or spirits or something. You could really run with the core transformation concept, plus you'd get brownie points for originality.

Red's suggestion is sounding mighty fine right now
Plus, the story so far would be pretty easy to translate to a Pokemon-less world
-
I agree with Red. Ditch the Pokémon side and add something else because the Pokémon side will probably drag it down.
EDIT: I mean, it's Pokémon. I can't take a game serious that says a scientist can change into a Pokémon. I can take a game serious in which a scientist can change into a "monster". (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide as a perfect example.)
-
All of the above is true (and similar).
Plus, there's something about Pokémon fan games that feels just terrible. It's one of those things that you just leave to the people who do that for a living. Fan work usually feels just awful when its not in the form of a drawing (or music, or even the occasional short film).
You dig (dug)?
-
You could always use their basic principle and gameplay but convert it into your own better, less tacky version. So,
for example, capture "wild beasts" or turn into a "mega-crab" or some **** like that. I dunno, it's just always good to
get a bit of a fanbase going that everyone - including Pokémon fans - can enjoy.
-
or turn into a "mega-crab"
But then you'd have a weak point.
-
Ok... Mega-Donkey... I'm no good at this!
-
A pokemon fan game? really? sure I'm a big pokemon nerd myself but somethin about those dont seem right. I like the idea of them turning into pokemon and back into there human forms but that sounds too much like a big black and white werewolf film or somethin. although its a pokemon fan game you still have my attention for it but don't have extremley gay things in it such as (shivers) Ash ketchum or the team rocket trio of faggotry, but how are you going to have them turn into the forms of human and pokemon will it just be executed during a fight by doing a simple command like in 2k3? or something either way make it good or I will break into your house and rip your *Insert loved one here* in half. I also agree with what Archem said above scary aint it? (Plays Pokemon platnium)

Do Digimon. No one remembers it and you can still be a Japanese wannabe.
-
I remember Digimon and if know one does how do you know? but yeah you could do that but read the first post I did

well, im stumped. i have three ideas; all three feature charas that will appear in EX. I'll let all of you help decide. My ideas are as follows:
the pokemon rpg, as listed in the thread title--- The one i created this thread for. Scientist turns into a pokemon and tries to figure out why, while both dealing with problems that threaten his old and new allies, as well as adjusting to his new form. When old grudges rear their heads, and the Scientist's old friends begin to fight amongst themselves, he will have no choice but to choose a side. But which side will he choose? It'd be final fantasy tactics-styled, with a pseudo-catching system. Wounded enemies can be "invited" to the player party, and may join him. May be made so the player can wander around, get into random fights, and build up his forces. Note: In order to avoid serious resource needs, only the game's six or so protagonists can transform; the rest are stuck in their human or pokemon forms.
Bloody Horizon: The Khaleid Chronicles--- Humankind is locked in a ferocious war for survival. Aluxius is the leader of an extraterrestrial race, dubbed "Immortals" by the humans due to their increadible tolerance to pain and injury. Aluxius has deemed humanity unfit to control the planet, and is conducting a massive campaign to eradicate them; humanity is slowly losing ground. The player controls Aluxius's only son, Solomon, a soldier in his army who is becoming increasingly agitated by his bit role in his father's great crusade. But neither Solomon nor Aluxius nor even the humans themselves are prepared for what happens after. Either Tactics-style, or ABS.
The Forlorn Soul (?) --- The player controls two separate parties. In a modern-styled world, two nations are locked in a bitter conflict, while internal unrest threatens one with a crippling civil war; the player controls a group of soldiers in this nation, as they try to quell the threat at home while dealing with the rival nation, who gains more ground constantly. In a more fantasy-styled setting, a strange youth sealed in an ethereal prison escapes with the aid of mysterious forces, and seeks revenge on those who imprisoned him. The real twist comes in the game's duality; due to strange circumstances, events or occurances in one realm can affect the other; for example, a mighty Fire-based spell in the fantasy realm can cause flames to spontaneously appear in a town in the modern one, while an air stike in the modern one may reduce a fantasy-realm forest to a field of craters. What happens when these two worlds intertwine, and the fates of both player parties become entagled?
Comment, tell which ideas you do/dont like, suggestions, support etc. Like I said, a few charas from all three will be in EX; this will give a little backstory on a few of them.
-
I really like the idea behind the Forlorn Soul. Do that one!
I'm wondering, would the interaction between worlds be purely a story device or will it affect gameplay a la Chrono Trigger or the Zelda: Ocarina/Oracle games, in which you had to switch between worlds to solve puzzles and the like? Either way it sounds interesting.

@RedGiant: Quite a bit of influence. If one party can't get through a door in a dungeon, and the other party visits the "other version" of that dungeon and does such-and-such, the first party can return for stuff like extra treasure and the like. There'll also be primary area applications, too.
@lucas: Sorry, since the charas that appear in it are already ingrained into the EX plotline "as" pokemon, i couldnt change it. The charas will already play a significant part in EX's pokemon world. If i changed it, i'd essentially have to remove the pokemon section, since i didn't really have a contingency plot for that one. I'm seriously considering against the pokemon one, though. I think i could use those points for originality. If it's any consolation, the main charas of Forlorn's fantasy can assume a "spirit" form, which i hope to utilize a BoFIII dragon gene system for (combine Fire and Wind elements, assume a Djinn spirit form, etc.)

In that case, do it. Seriously. If you don't do it I'll just steal it so your hands are tied.
-
okay then. Recommendations for the engine? I'm thinking trying a tactical for either XP or VX.
-
dont do a pokemon TBS.
-
i've already decided not to.
