Title: Mick Grey: Private Investigator
Post by: _JeT_ on July 09, 2009, 01:45:07 AM
MICK GREY: PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR
A sort of sci-fi, mystery game with a bit of my odd sense of humor

About time I did something, eh?

PLOT:Mick Grey is a middle-aged, down in the dumps detective, who had messed up his last case which resulted in someone getting shot because of his stupidity. Two months after his last case, he is given the opportunity to redeem himself when a young lady knocks on his door, telling a tale of her missing friend. She hires the poor gumshoe, telling him that her friend, Sharon, has gone missing, and that she suspects Sharon’s husband is the reason for her disappearance. Mick accepts the case, and ventures to Sharon’s apartment, which, conveniently, was next door. Upon entering, he discovers a bizarre race of creature over the dead body of Sharon‘s husband, which may be the whole reason for Sharon’s disappearance, and for other strange occurrences in the neighborhood. To avoid spoiling much of anything, he is then responsible to stop the monsters, and to save the city.

GAMEPLAY: There is actually no battles or such in this game, excluding the arcade games. It is all an investigation, evidence/information collecting game, which involves interacting with your environment, which typically results in Mick making some lousy, stupid comment on most things. Overall, it is quite easy, and is not intended to be challenging for the most part, except for a few bits near the end of the game.
In this game, health is basically Mick’s confidence. Due to his long unemployment, it is very limited. When the player screws up, his confidence is lowered. Currently, it can only be raised two ways. One, is the liquor on his desk (Full heal). And the second way is by winning at either the arcade game, or scoring a basket with the ball outside his office (One point recovered). But if you miss a basket or lose at the game, you lose health.

The menu system is a small evidence list, which allows you to look at a brief summary of the item (Most unimportant for the most part) or equip an item. Since I plan on making this short, and easy, there are only 11 slots, but at least 1 or 2 slots will get used twice, once the original object is rendered useless.

Other:    -Other little minigames, which are currently in production. In the current demo, the lock picking and one arcade minigame are available. The arcade game is a little tribute to Fish’s Warped, as it is a space battle with three different opponents to choose from.
-Running system (toggle with the X/Cancel key)

The bar.

REPORTED GLITCHES/BUGS: -Fish said he somehow got put into Phasing mode at one point, but he couldnt give specifics on location or situation or anything, and I couldnt find anything. If it happens to anyone else, tell me, and give more info.
-Deathreaper said music doesnt work for him, but it works for everyone else I asked.
NOTES:    -Not all of the NPC’s have been made/put in yet.
-The backroom in the bar is not accessible yet.
-If I have forgotten anyone in the opening credits, contact me. (Mainly directed towards lurkers who never post, but contribute    to the CR)
-*NEW* In one of the new areas, a flashlight is used. Due to potential lag issues, I had to disable the menu, and remove the healthbar and equipped item pictures. However, the healthbar is necessary in one room, so there may be some lag in there.

UPDATES This new demo version includes more object interactions, two more of the monsters to defeat, new people to talk to, more inventory items, and fixes some minor bugs and awkwardness from the last version (not much though). Plus, the lame minigame in the bar is now ready.

Okay, now you can give me feedback/criticism. Enjoy! ^_^

This all sounded good to me...until...

This sounded good to me...until I got here.

Upon entering, he discovers a bizarre race of creature over the dead body of Sharon‘s husband, which may be the whole reason for Sharon’s disappearance, and for other strange occurrences in the neighborhood.

This has Indigo Prophecy Syndrome written all over it.

Do not tell me these monsters are summoned by an ancient mythical cult and he is the only one who can help. Do NOT tell me that.

No, it is some odd Science Experiment/Research gone wrong. Technically, it is a parasite which screws up the hosts mind, appearance, humanity, and all that, granting them their grotesque appearance, and aggressive behaviour. But, he sort of is the only one to stop it. Everyone else doesn't believe him, as they haven't seen them before and find the whole idea ridiculous, and the only other guy that knows of it is too old to be of any use anyway, and just gives him some stuff to help him.

The title screen is so good. I wonder who did that? Must be a really talented artist.

Stop rubbing your ego.

I started playing it, and i got quite a few laughs out of it.

EDIT:  I like where they found the husband at the beginning the most.  That I got some weird stares from laughing so hard.

i got the gun Equipped but don't know how to shot it

Don't use the gun on him, as he will just scare you off. Use the item you find near the basketball court to get rid of him. I had Klein say to get one to show how he is kind of cowardly, and such. Do you think I should have Mick say something when he picks up that item, or something?

IIRC, just go to the "Detectiveness.lzh" file that you downloaded, and click on "RPG_RT.exe" application.

I think he means he doesn't understand the basics. You know like I didn't at first.

Oh, sorry! XD

You go around, collect evidence, talk to people. To progress, you have to talk to people with certain items equipped, use certain items when prompted, and solve basic puzzles.

If you need specific help, just ask.

EDIT: Added two reported bugs to first post.

No, I mean how do you load the file xD
I have no idea what a .lzh means.

I like the idea of this. Is it going to be a fairly short game once completed? It's probably best to go for quality rather than quantity with this sort of thing.

Fruck, the .lzh is the gamedisk, which is the file you downloaded. Just use WinRAR to open it, and click on the "RPG_RT.exe" application that is in there. That is what I always do with those.

Yes, that is what I planned on.

I like it!

But I got caught in a glitch... after going into the menu and exiting again, I moved really slowly, even while running.

It was after I got the gun... all I did was fiddle around in the menu.  Don't remember exactly what I did, and now I can't make it do it again.

Alright, I will take a look at the coding for the menu, and see if I can find what's up.

You could still make it and try to give Jet a run for his money, but I'm not sure there is a Dectective game that can beat Mick Grey PI. It's number two on my all time favorite RPG maker games list.

Meh, go for it. I like detective games. ^ ^

Not like I am being serious with this one anyway. I just work on it when I have some spare time.
