Title: Glitches!
Post by: fruckert on July 17, 2009, 09:33:14 AM
I'm bored.

So, I'm curious as to all of the interesting/weird glitches that you guys have come across in game design.
So far, my most weird one is in the Patchwork Engine.
If you drop the clothes you have equipped (sorry I haven't released that demo yet, I was under orders from Val) while they're still equipped, you suddenly grew to about three times your size.
I still haven't figured out why...
Also, have you ever found a glitch and then turned it into a feature?
The launcher blocks in Kyoob are an example of that :P .
I found a glitch with Sparkengine and made it into a feature.

Once, I was playing a motorbike game. I went at full speed into a tiny space in between two barriers. Amazingly enough, I went through the opening, and into the outer area of the map. I enjoyed several minutes of driving my airbourne motorbike through the clouds, basking in the magnificent view of the skybox... Ahhh.

****, back in the day, I was a game-glitching genius. There wasn't a game that I hadn't found a glitch in!

I think my favorite one was getting outside of Area 51 in THPS. There was a space above the gate behind the rollin that you start on where, if you aired high enough, you could get past the invisible wall. Lots of invisible holes in the ground, and a gate that was supposed to be scenery actually opened to let you back in the level (assuming you could get past the minefield of invisible holes).

Link's Awakening warp glitch was days of fun for me. I could get the fire rod and fight the final boss without ever even getting the sword, all with three hearts. Did I mention within a few minutes?

Also, the Sonic games were chocked full of glitchiness once you enabled debug mode. Even without it, there were always things like taking Sonic's paths with Knuckles on certain levels, and getting blue Knuckles.

I can only recall one off the top of my head, which involved jumping in MMX's flame mammoth's stage, up a trash shaft and screwing the hell out of everything in color and enemy visibility. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV0WdcHjpMM)

Also, in spore, if you create a creature with perfectly straight limbs, they wobble all over the place. This is done by taking a single segment of limb and looping it to create a straight segment with a joint; the game doesn't know which way it's supposed to bend!

I once got a funny extreme close-up of Martin Septim in oblivion; the game automatically had forced me to talk to someone behind him. This was the result:

Are you saying all I have to do is drag that into spore, and it will be playable?

Well, yeah. Though, it doesn't seem to work on firefox. What I usually end up having to do is saving the image to my computer, then dragging it in. It works:

Quote from: SPORE Website
Drag to your desktop then drag into a Spore creator

No, it's something embedded within the image file itself. I honestly don't know how it works; it just does.

Um... in game design? Well, my RPG Maker scripts never work the way they're supposed to >_>

As for gaming in general, I think my favorite is the warp glitch in Link to the Past that gets you to the Triforce room in 5 minutes. It's a good thing that more of those glitches don't exist, or else speedruns wouldn't be nearly as exciting.

Hey, somebody read my first sentence :D

Also, welcome to charas. You get bonus points for having an avatar this early on.

Anyways, I think my favorite non-me game glitch is definitely the Secret Worlds in Metroid.
