Very well...to prove your devotion to the dark side you must kill your best freind. Go now and do not fail me.

Okay seriously what's the problem your having? Shading, Scaling or maybe something else?

Hmm Scaling not my area of expertise, but I'll try to help. Show me what you want to sprite/edit and I'll see if i can't give you some pointers.

That's fine. i can wait till your done. All spiriting requires time to make it perfect. True masters know this.

So yeah. I noticed my mistake.

Anyway, useful advice for spriting? Just do a lot of stuff. '

Get started on something, try to learn how the different styles look like.
Simple things like seeing the difference between a RTP charset and an overworld sprite from FF3(6).

Try to make your avatar-you in the style.
Try a style as much as you can. Try to add more details than necessary.

Humans are so keenly made that we learn from experience. You become comfortable with what you are doing and you learn a lot of stuff on the way.
I'd love to start working with something, read a manual and then be as good as the person with a 30 year employment there.
But it doesn't work like that.

What I'm trying to say is that the best way to learn is by doing. You learn by doing and you do things to try them. And you try stuff because you want to become better. It may sound stupid but that's how it is.
Make some stuff and ask for advice.
Most experienced spriters will get all "meh" on colours and shading. Lack of real light-source ect. But that's the kind of things you'll learn.
Like "never use MS paint's standar colours - they suck" - get a new palette from other sprites or such and it usually turn out a lot better.
As for the shading, it's pretty hard. Try to decide that the light comes from the upper right or the upper left corner, it's easiest that way. For example: 3 colours, one light, one medium and one dark. You put the light one in the upper left corner and the darker one in the lower right corner.

And about scaling... I don't even see why you should need to scale anything. If you need something made larger - just make a new sprite.

Not even sure if anything helped here.

I agree with what prprl said.  Also, to throw my two cents in, I recommend starting simple.  Just like coding, you start with the simple codes, then learn to use switches, then conditions, then variables, etc.  Try starting with an 8 or 16 bit style sprite, something without a lot of detail.  Do a lot of copypasta, set up your own battlers, heck redo them a pixel at a time so you can get a feel for the art.  It's just trial and error with lots of repetition.  Before you know it you'll figure out shading, scaling, dithering, and lots of other spriting skills.

Ah I think I see your problem. First off, unless you want 8 bit styled games you'll need to add more shading. Shading is realy easy. All you do is picture you lighting in your mind and then draw. Here's a good way to learn shading, believe it or not. Take an action figure outside and put it some where there's sunlight, look at how the shades contrast with one another and layer. Try that. You can also do this in your room if you have a window.
