Title: The Definitive Top 5 Thread
Post by: Dragonium on August 08, 2009, 07:33:25 PM
Seems threads like this come around every so often, but it might (disclaimer: or might not) be a good idea to have a proper official one in place as the go-to thread for people's videogame tastes. Or words to that effect.

Post your top 5 games of all time. Explain as much or as little as you wish. If you change your mind, edit your post, and we'll keep it facts-only and to-the-point like the Gamertag thread was supposed to be before someone (probably me) ruined it. If it gets used enough I might sticky it, because God knows we don't have enough All of All stickies am I right guys.

And if it doesn't get used enough and you all think it's a silly idea we'll condemn it to the depths of Hell and never speak of it again.

~~~
Reverse order teehee drama.
5th - Breath of Fire III
4th - Monster Hunter Freedom: Unite
3rd - Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
2nd - Streets of Rage 2
1st - Final Fantasy VIII
~~~

Go. Or don't.

Uhm, choosing 5 of my favourite game is quite hard, and placing them in order is even harder.
Which is why I'll name the gameyes, you losts, but will not place them in order for now.

Xth - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Probably the game I finished the most often. Started playing it when I was quite young and never really got bored of it.

Xth - Golden Sun (1&2)
I count them as one because I like them equally. I've only finished them twice so far, and although I took a break of it, they're still amongst my favourite games.

Xth - Chrono Trigger
My favourite RPG so far.

Xth - Final Fantasy IX
My second favourite RPG so far.

Xth - World of Warcraft
Yes, I'm serious. It's the game I've played the most, and even thought it became quite redundant, no games as given me as much fun as this one did.

So well that's about it. I will place them in order when I feel like I'm pretty sure of the position I give them.

5 - The Pokemon Series (they're basically the same game.) - I enjoy coming back time and time again to reassemble my faithful team for another round of trainer bashing, but eventually, it just wears down.

4 - Diablo II and Lord of Destruction (Lost a lot of points with Hell difficulty.) - No matter how much you prepare yourself, there is always a monster ready to take you down, this game never gets any easier, but still maintains a sane level of difficulty.

3 - Super Smash Bros. Melee - Despite horribly raping Ness, Luigi, and Ganondorf by giving Ness moves he never learned in Earthbound, and by making Ganondorf and Luigi clones, SSBM never gets old.... at least until I finally get a Wii. (Or Dolphin-emu fixes the problems with subspace emissary.)

2 - Super Mario Bros. 3 - This was tough, it really was. Super Mario Bros. 3 was perfect. I could never find anything wrong with it, it was my motivation to purchase an NES again and revive my collection of cartridges.

1 - Me and My Katamari - There was nothing wrong with Super Mario Bros. 3, but this.... this... was a perfect cake, with frosting. I can only thank whoever decided to take the concept of a dung beetle, combine it with a strangely kickass soundtrack, scale it to epic proportions and all the while keep things as simple as making a giant ball of random stuff!

Honorable mentions:

Earthbound / Mother 2 - Was a decent challenge the first time through, but half of the time, I was lost. I counted ten times having to look up where to go on a walkthrough. What really hurt was Poo. Who was this guy? He totally came out of nowhere and doesn't even look like he belongs with the other three. That, and Giygas was less challenging than I thought he would be. Actually killing Paula a couple of times would've made the battle worthwhile, but no, he just kept missing.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped - The airplane levels, 'nuff said. *mourns Crash Bandicoot.*

You're asking me to choose five single games between the over three- or four-hundred games I've played?
Ridiculous.

Donkey Kong Country, Bioshock, Pokemon, WBC3, Red Alert 2, Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl, Link's Awakening,
Link to the Past, Ratchet and Clank, Oracle of Ages and god... soooo many more! I take back my first post!

Oh, Momeka. I'm playing through Fallout 1 and I can't help but notice lots of similarities with Jagged Alliance 2, both in gameplay as in graphics. You might want to check that out if you haven't already.

I shall check it out. But I have to admit as much as the gameplay it's the setting and dark humor that's makes me love Fallout 1 & 2.

Can't say Jagged Alliance has the same type of humour, but they do have it. Mercenary humour mostly, seeing as your squad exists of hand-picked mercenaries.

V: Portal - it's such an original idea for a game! Although extremely linear, the puzzles are challenging, the dialogue is humorous, and the graphics are pretty nifty.

IV: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - A nice return to the Zelda series we all know and love. The art style is so reminiscent of my favorite Zelda Game OoT (of course, the artist was the same, but whatever). A great adventure game.

III: Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Duh.

II: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Okay, I'll admit it -  the only reason it's my favorite is because, at the time of its release, it was considered "OMG FANTASTIC!!!" It was a decent story and a great adventure game (as are all Zelda games).

I: Kingdom Hearts II - I've stated it too many times to even care about writing an explanation :P

Not in any particular order...

Halo
- Resident Evil 4.  Which do you prefer: Broken Butterfly or Killer7?
- Earthbound.  Still haven't beaten that sucker.  But I will someday...
- The Golden Sun series.  I'm waiting for 3.
- Metal Gear Solid 1 or 3.  Not 2 - Raiden is a whiny b'tch.
- Ocarina of Time.  Enough said.

If I could list 10, it would be easier.

How is Jagged Alliance?  I've heard it's good.  Have you ever heard of its 'spiritual sequel,' Brigade E5: New Jagged Union?
DON'T EVER PLAY THAT PIECE OF SH'T.
Obvious MGS2-hater-because-Snake-isn't-the-lead-hater is obvious. Metal Gear Solid was awesome, my favourite title. People should look past Raiden and see what Kojima did with this piece of art. Also, Raiden might be whiny, but if you pay attention to him, you know why, and it suits the character and story. I wouldn't want to play MGS2 any other way.

I knew someone was going to say that.  Yes, I knew Raiden would take over for Snake, so it wasn't surprise that made me hate him.  He's just annoying.
But the story is REALLY good.

You'd better, that game is fun and entertaining but the amount of bugs and problems it has, let alone the unfinished parts, could never make it a top 5 game.

Hey, don't forget about the gameplay. The story of MGS1 is slightly better, everyone knows that. But we're talking about games and those small things they did improve in MGS2 are just so great it slightly rises above 1 for me.

You're right about the gameplay.  I liked being able to whip around corners to tranq a guy.
On my first playthrough, I didn't have any silent weapons except for the M9.

The Twin Snakes version of MGS1 puts all those little touches from 2 into the original, but it loses its uniqueness somehow.

True, but for some reason it feels different. For one, the graphical style in The Twin Snakes isn't the same as the that of Sons of Liberty, so it was MGS, but didn't look like what it is supposed to look like. Besides this, I felt the music was off.

WAAY off.  Didn't like it much.  It was missing the traditional battle music.  The Tank Hanger music was ok though.

2. Final Fantasy 10 (PS2) - So goddamn addictive. Played it for 60 hours in a single week. A touching, atmospheric masterpiece.
3. Disgaea (PS2/DS) - Unfathomably complex and addictive. The perfect game formula. Spent literally hundreds of hours on this. Hilarious dialogue, too.
4. Wind Waker/Twilight Princess/LTTP (GC/SNES?Wii)- Zelda games. Do they even need justifying!?
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - The. Best. Fighting. Game. Ever. Created. Ever.
