Title: The amazing Source engine editor!
Post by: zuhane on September 07, 2009, 04:33:07 PM
I've decided to move away from RPG Maker for a while and head towards making mods with things using the Source engine. It's very
difficult and requires extreme patience, but it's so good having an extremely well-made 3D FPS engine in my fingertips. I have some
ideas, which, funnily enough, don't involve hordes of zombies or war for once! I'm hopefully gonna make an extremely stealth-based
game set on a tropical paradise island (God, I love paradise islands, don't I?) with NO standard weapons. This means no pistols, shotguns,
assault rifles or snipers. All the weapons are going to be extremely original, such as the Med-Knife, Concealer, Mirror Gun and Leukocytic
Attraction Bombs.

The Source engine, incase anyone doesn't know, is used to make classic games such as Half-life 2, Counterstrike: Source, Team Fortress 2
and Left 4 Dead etc. Whilst the graphics are in no way to be considered bad, they aren't too taxing on a PC, meaning just about any modern PC
should be able to run a Source game.

Anyway, owning a PC means that you MUST own Half-life 2. If you don't, then buy it. It's voted the best FPS ever made by certain sites. If anyone
owns a game using the Source engine and would be interested in making a mod with me, let me know. I'm steadily learning map-making and skinning
and hopefully want to learn a bit of modelling and coding.

Don't worry either. I'm not that experienced, so don't feel out of your league. LET ME KNOW!

My laptop doesn't like Source games. They run fine for a while and then the screen freezes, the sound loops for a bit and they crash for no good reason.

I'm not saying this is relevant to the thread, I'm just saying that you should fix it.

My laptop doesn't like Source games. The graphics don't work, and instead I can see through some of them.
Doesn't mean I can't play TF2 on whoring servers.

But...yeah...you know how to 3d model?
If you're going to make original weapons, then your probably going to want to have some original models for them.

Source games killed my father and raped my mother

The school milk raped my father and killed my mother.
*coughinsidejokecough*

But yeah...good luck, this is probably going to take a sizy long time.

My school's milk is too small for that.

Source... games...?  *has little knowledge of such*

Like in Half-Li... oh your messing with us aren't you? >_o

Hmmm... it would be cool to make a game with the Source-Engine, but 3D modeling is a bit of a pain in the butt.

Your laptops are fags. Also, is originality on the internet dead? Find out at 11.

I can always tweak and reskin existing 3D models. My main concern was getting 3D models for new guns. I would
hopefully be assembling a team, making this task easier :D

I can't even run finish loading Garry's mod and it crashes.  TF2 runs for maybe a few minutes, then I get Dragonium's error.
Laptops aren't really meant for 3D gaming unless you get those really powerful laptops that sell for $3000.

But if I could run the editor, I would be having lots of fun.  For example, trying to make a cat gun.  Shoots cats and makes meowing sounds.

That'd be great! I'm actually having an extremely annoying problem at the moment. I got a VTF (Valve Texture File) plugin for
photoshop which lets you modify character skins. However, the plugin doesn't work... it's useless...

When you say "doesn't work", do you mean it screws up, just doesn't load, or what? Version incompatibility? Don't they have a readme with these things? >_O Also, DAMN ENGINES AND THEIR PROPRIETARY FORMATS!

Yursssshhh! Found a conversion program. Replaces Alyx's face with Adolf Hitler's face. Just
a start. Surely I'll be skinning and modelling new weapons in no time :D

I used Hammer a little, but I couldn't be fucked to learn the more advanced features. I can make doors really well though.

It's hard work. I wanted to assemble a team via moddb.com, but thought it would be better to try
and assemble a closer team of people with smarter minds that didn't just want to make "zombie apocalypse"
games!

Good luck with that.  I mean it...

You know what's the hardest bit? Compling it into an actual mod. There's no tutorials anywhere on that.
I can make maps and skins and I know a bit of coding, but I don't actulaly know how to make "New Game"
put you on that map!

I've just recently started fiddling with Hammer, and I can create blocks and drop props onto a map like nobody's business.  As for making an actual functioning map, though...I'm still working on that.
