So...I've been running through this idea in my head, and everyone I've asked said that it's brilliant.
I'm wanting to make it, but I'm needing some people to help, mainly in the graphics department.
So...here's the concept:
Time Travelling puzzle game.
Not in the Reverse Timeline vein at all, more like jumping in-between eras.
In case that's hard to understand, think this:
There's a ledge you need to get past.
So, you jump back in time, and find a seed.
You plant the seed, and go back to the "present", and see a sapling.
Go back into the future, and there's a tree.
Climb the tree, achieve goal.
Anyone have any suggestions for graphics style/want to jump in?
Oh, it's going to be a platformer.
-
I'm kind of going for a slightly depressing mood, though.
The only reason why someone would really want to travel back in time and stuff is if the timeline got destroyed.
-
reminds me of chrono trigger/zelda I would definitely play it if you made it.
-
Sounds really cool. Game Maker?
-
Yes.
-
Chrono Trigger watches and judges you.
Still, could be fun times.
-
Perhaps make it post-apocalyptic. A good plot idea was in a book I read a long time ago, I don't remember the name, but this kid invents a perfect simulator for the universe, including human behavior, and they find out that when humans get time travel technology they take all the resources from the past, where they were plentiful, but then the humans at the beginning of time don't have anything to work with, and the entire human timeline gets polluted and stripped of resources.
Of course, realistically that's a load of nonsense, but that doesn't stop it from being a good plot.
-
It sounds like a mixture between portal and chrono trigger lol

Do you perhaps know the name of this book?
I'm thinking that that's not a half bad plot, and I just wanted to get a synopsis to know what I need to avoid so I don't get my *** handed to me legally.

I said in the post you quoted that I didn't know the name of the book :p. It was in second or third grade (it wasn't a little kids book though, I was reading on a 9th grade level back then). I'll try to find it, but I really have absolutely no recollection of the book itself, just the plot.

The Hitchhiker's Guide had a similar plot line at one point. In the future people invented a machine that could drain the power of the past, so they used it, claiming that anyone that wanted to protect the past was just indulging in nostaliga. After a while though, the people using these machines realized that people in THEIR future were using it on THEM to suck energy out of their time as well, so they had them all destroyed.

And I decided not to really have a straight narrative.
I'm just going to have floating narrative sentences upon entering each screen, being purposefully ambiguous as to what exactly happened.
I hope that'll lead to the eerie mood I'm going for.
Also, I was thinking on a sketched art style, but in that case I'll need to find someone who can draw/sprite like that.
Also, Uber is currently working on some mock up graphics, so I can show the gameplay mechanics.
EDIT: Also, I'm naming it Seed.

Umm... I'll see what I can do but I'm not making any promises.
By the way, have you heard of 'Shadow of Memories'? It's a playstation 2 game about a guy who's travelling through time to find out who murdered him and then prevent it. It's a brilliant game but it gets kinda confusing later on.
-
Nope, never heard of it.
I need to play more games that involve time travel.
*goes and trys to finish Chrono*

I think we all do!
Also, if anyone's interested, you can probably get it on amazon.

... Braid?
-
... Braid?
Hah, indeed. Great game, terribly confusing storyline to the point where you just wanted to ignore it and could easily do so.

Have you played Zelda: Oracle of Ages of the Gameboy Colour? That portrays
that idea perfectly and it works. You lose all your equipment and have to keep
travelling back and forth through time to get it back.
-
...I don't understand what's so hard to understand about a game where you manipulate the past to do stuff in the future.
Also, I HAVE A STORY.
KINDOF.
...yeah.
Also, I'm currently building the engine.
-
Hasn't this been done many times?
I know I recognize it, but I can't remember any games which actually does it :-\

No, but seriously, good idea :D You should try playing Sunset over Imdahl- they used time travel really well in that, and I think it was RM from what I remember.

I loved this game :O

Myst rocks. But on a note closer to the topic, I think that if you do it well enough it doesn't really matter how common time travel is in video games.

I have to agree, I really like the concepts. I think Ocorina of Time did it beautifully. God I love those games.
