Title: Agervis ; A unique MMORPG. Added video demo. xD
Post by: Zodiakk on November 26, 2009, 03:51:41 PM
Agervis [latin words Ager- land, Vis- hate and violence] is a Platform MMORPG I have been working on for quiet a while.  All of the scripting is done and now I am working on tilesets/chipsets and a little bit of mapping.
The game is basically about living in the slums [aka the ghetto :P] and being successful.
Something unique about this game is that you really choose your own path.  Not like in other games that make this claim, because you don't end up doing the same thing as everyone else.
It has 3 classes-  Note there is almost no more coding left, just the items.  Still have to decide on stats/prices, etc.

Gang Member- You can form your own gangs and buy clothes to represent your gang.  Only the leader of the gang or someone who is given authority can recruit you.  You can't recruit yourself :P.  Gangs take territory, which will be posted on the website weekly.  People will fight for turf because each city has a unique feature of some kind.  Gangs will soldier their turf for obvious reasons like good training.  They don't want rival gangs to get too strong, so they fight anyone that comes near it xD  They make money dealing drugs, mugging other classes, or any other dastardly techniques they think of :D

Cops-  The cops are players :D  They have the 'gang' feature but it is known as a squad.  Cops go up levels and are able to wear better clothes for different ranks [new rank every 10 levels; starting as a rent-a-cop].  They must complete training before they are even allowed in the game :O.  They get a paycheck :D

Civilians- Civilians are typically entrepreneurs (did I spell that right?).  There are jobs that only the Civilians can do.  They also supply the drugs that are dealt by the Gang Members (can you say stimulated economy? :]).  They can do so in various places, like chem labs in colleges xD.  They are victims of a lot of crimes, and aren't very combat-capable.

I still have to do the maps and gfx, so it could be a while because I have no dev team :P  Here is an example screenshot video, although these aren't the final tilesets.

Sounds like you've thought about it a good bit. What platform will you be using or are you coding this from scratch? Pics would be nice too.

Who would choose to play as a civilian in a game about drug dealers and cops? Not only is it a non-sexy job, but it sounds like you'd be powerless and completely at the mercy of everyone else in the game. Not fun.

I disagree with the statement that it sounds like this is well thought-out: game designer seems to have a very poor grasp on what people find as fun in a game.

Well thought out as in, rough draft; concept idea. _sweat_

But yes, what would civilians do int he game aside from getting mugged, shot at, and bullied by gang members? I'm assuming they must have some kind of upper hand or else they really wouldn't be much fun to play as.

It seems the rough draft ship has sailed a while ago. Civilians sound like a good part of the game for them to exist, and it would be probably good if anyone wanted to play them, but I can't imagine why anyone would.

And this is without touching on all the other MMORPG inherent problems - mostly having to do with that MM part. Good luck finding enough people to populate the world to the point where it could function.

Okay, that may be true. Maybe I jumped the gun a bit on the "well thought out" part. =P BUT, I think we need more infos before anything else can really be said.

By the way, I think you got the definition of vis a little wrong. At least according to dictionary.com (which says it means strength; force; power). I checked cause I'm using -vis as an ending for the name of an empire in my game and wanted to make sure.

EDIT: Sai makes a good point about the "MM" part of your ORPG

This is for players who aren't into constant pvp, but rather a safe job.

Actually it is quiet the contrary.  I have a 200 page composition notebook  that is nearly FULL of notes that I have taken which i carry at all times.  But this is just the outline.  You won't hear much about it until the BETA v0.1 realease.  As for now I will not waste too much free time that could be contributed to the actual production of the game.

But if it is anything, it is VERY well thought-out.  :)

But yeah the civilians put the drugs on the streets, so I don't understand why you said:

Actually its made with eclipse evolution 2.8.  But it is completely recoded to make platform games.

EDIT: Ah internet went down, didn't realize that last post went up.
Sorry for the double post :P

Dude... A hydra on top of a building where you buy weed with Soulja boi in the background???? -_-
I get it's just a demo of the mechanics, but come on man, that was awful. Just saying, if you want people to take you a little more seriously, lose the soulja boi crap.

Other than that, some constructive criticism now: Movement seems like it might be a bit awkward, especially jumping. You might also want to consider staying away from the mainstream idea of the streets and cops and thugs. Most people playing mmo's (and anyone with a brain) think that **** is queer. That may be a little harsh, but it's true. It'd be neat if it was a bit grimier and more realistic than a glorification of being a thug as GTA does(though, that game is a lot of fun, it's only fun when you cheat). I'm not saying that's what you're aiming for, but all the signs so far say you just might be.

Also, if you don't have a dev team, and as I suppose because of that, you're not going to make your own graphics, even a beta demo release this month seems a bit ambitious.

Not trying to crush your dreams, just being realistic with you. Good luck, overall, this is meant to be helpful, so I hope it is.

Soulja boi? Ouch... >_O my ears bleed...

But yeah, I agree with drenrin, it looks really clunky.

Ya Sry, the video didnt really sell me. It looked neat at first... then nothing really happened and it seemed really slow pace and... I wanna say Odd.

This looks like a good trail run or something. A good start of a project, but you need to improve upon the idea/concepts and really figure out where it can go.

Good luck with it man.

The video makes it look more like an NES platformer than a MMORPG. Why is our gang member able to jump to the top of a 3 story building?  ???

I also couldn't make out at all what you were typing in the video. Resolution was too small for it to be readable.

Well first of all this is just a sample of the physics.  If the game were great would I be here?
Ok.  So anyway I would love some good music, but soulja boy is in as a reult of audio swap.  Why does the music even matter?

And I figured I did forget the entire gang member sterotypes.  That's my fault, I know.
From my point of view (having 2 brothers doing time in prison) gang members are merely people who claim territory and have strength to back it up.  I don't want another lame mideivil project.  It is extremely far from done, and wtf why would you mention anything to do with the gfx anyways?  Considering this isn't even an official map or official gfx (which I stated many times...)

He can't.  He jumps 1.5x his height.  I am demoing the physics, afterall.  Aren't i?  ;)

I'm leavin' it. Trolling this project is easy (and a little fun) but this guy clearly doesn't want input; he just wants us to be amazed and awed and say everything is perfect. I think the breaking point was when he claimed it was "very well thought-out" when it seems... eh... not. At all.

Games with gangsters, weed, and blue hydras on roofs. Neat.

I'm going to be honest and say that I close the video out 45secs in the video just because of the music choice for the demo vid; However after reading more of the comments in this thread, I decided to watch the video fully.

-First off, why are the clouds arranged like that in the sky and why are they so small? It REALLY suggests you can jump on them.
-The roof of the building where you can buy weed is not consistent in design compared to the other roofs.
-The concept of going to a public areas "chemisty lab" to make some dope in a bag is odd.
-The sign of the high school could pass as bad graffiti.. maybe. I wouldn't have known that was a high school if it wasn't for that sign.
-A random floating Island and a monstrous Hydra on the roof... Why are they here? Can I sell some drugs to the Hydra?

He can't.  He jumps 1.5x his height.  I am demoing the physics, afterall.  Aren't i?

Then I suggest you work on your "physics" more, as it really DOES look like he's jumping straight on a roof. Heck within 45secs in the video, he's jumping from floor to floor.

Ok.  So anyway I would love some good music, but soulja boy is in as a result of audio swap.  Why does the music even matter?

You're right! You should play "Touch My Body" by Mariah Carey when you're demonstrating your battle system next time.

If you want us to take your game more seriously, you should put some effort in the music choice for your video. If an author doesn't even put effort in something small like music choice, why should we even play the game?

......It is extremely far from done, and wtf why would you mention anything to do with the gfx anyways?  Considering this isn't even an official map or official gfx..

Okay, let's say we omit all the graphics from your demo vid. Since we "don't know" what your graphics will look like, all we have is a guy with a gun jumping around to Soulja boy music. IDK but somehow.. I bet that Hydra will still be there also. When most people first look at a demo the very first thing that crosses their mind is the graphics. If the graphics aren't good, whose to say that the rest of the game will look bad? When you create a demo vid you need to put effort in these sort of things so you can build an impression and credibility, even if things aren't official. It could mean the difference of people playing your game or not.

------------

I'm going to leave this topic alone now. I'm liking that its not another jrpg RPG Maker game, however I suggest holding out displaying your game until you have more to show.

My final words:
“Don't mind criticism. If it is untrue, disregard it; if unfair, keep from irritation; if it is ignorant, smile; if it is justified it is not criticism, learn from it.”

No, its just annoying that I merely want to demonstrate the physics, and yet evenyone mentions every thing EXCEPT what I demo'd.  I got NO feedback on what I asked for, just a bunch of negative feedback on the thing that I didn't even make.
Not one single person gave me serious feedback.

So four people replied giving serious feedback that didn't have to do with the graphics or music of your video. All four of those touch on the physics or the game concept in general. But because some of it was negative, it wasn't "serious feedback."

I know, I know, I said I'd stop trolling this topic. But I hate it when people just start lying randomly and go off into their own little victimized world where everything should be perfect and people that don't agree with them are stupid and evil. Stars alive, get a grip man. Didn't you say you were in college? You should have a decent grasp on the fact that not everyone thinks you're the best person ever by now. The world's a tough place. If you're going to show people stuff, you have to be prepared for the fact that sometimes they're going to say they don't like it.
