Title: Serious Business (school newspaper comic)
Post by: Valiere on January 03, 2010, 10:40:17 PM
I'm making a comic strip for the University of Texas Austin (where I'm transferring) newspaper, which they'll hopefully pick up after a death threat or two. The strip is basically a parody of the university itself and the fanatical devotion of a lot of its alumni and fans. As such, I'll have to explain a couple jokes, such as the fact that maroon is the color of one of UT's biggest football rivals.

It starts out a little slow because it's a serial comic and I have to follow a storyline while still making jokes, but bear with me!

Haha.  I see a twilight reference.  I think.

EDIT:  My only complaint is whether she has glasses or not.  In some frames its looks like she does, in others she does not.

Given the over-saturation of tweeny vampire media in today's popular culture, there's really no guarantee.

Yeah, it's a Twilight reference. The heroine is essentially what I perceive to be a dreamy "Twilight" girl.

Anyway, new comics! I think I see a plot developing!

Oh, and another thing to clear up for the uninitiated: the University of Texas' mascot is the longhorn, hence my made-up secret society "The Order of the Long Horn."

The only thing I'm thinking right now, due to my rampant OCD, is that her foil must be fucked up if it were to bend like that prone.

Yeah, I was in a fencing club.
It's fun.

I was in a fencing class too. Yeah, it probably doesn't make any sense, but I bet you'd get in huge trouble if you tried bending it like that!

Are these comics a thinly veiled reference to your own meandering experience and oddball friends?

Becca is the best character by the way.

No. I actually made a concerted effort not to add any self- and friend-inserts, like I did in my other school newspaper comic. It's better this way, because if a character's supposed to be your friend, it keeps you from abusing and derailing their personality to hell.

Update! I've drawn lots.

Explanations for the uninitiated:

The guys with the huge chins are supposed to be from UT's rival school, Texas A&M (Their students are nicknamed "Aggies"). To make that more obvious, they're all drawn like one of A&M's mascots,"Ol' Sarge." (http://www.aggies9496.com/Images/AggieGifs/OlSarge3.jpg)

Bevo the Longhorn is UT's mascot.

An anti-UT Aggie slogan is "Saw 'em off," usually accompanied with an image of the UT logo with its horns...sawed off. (http://www.fileitunder.com/uploaded_images/saw-em-off-782578.jpg)

Burnt orange is UT's official color, hence "I bleed burnt orange."

For some reason, when you draw faces at an oblique angle, the forehead, to me at least, looks really wide.
Mostly with protagonist-whose-name-I-forget-and-don't-want-to-go-back-a-page-to-learn's.

It's pretty damn funny, besides that li'l bit.

Many thanks.

Good news! The comics editor chose seven comic artists out of about 20 to come up with pitch ideas for a five-day inter-comics storyline....and inexplicably, I'm one of them! Inexplicably, because I thought she didn't like my writing. Anyway, it's a "western" theme this semester, and I'm supposed to come up with an idea for one page. I'll scan and post the results when it's done.

Just outside an old west town, there's a kid farmer who wants to go out on adventures but his aunt and uncle won't let him because they need him to stay for the harvest. Then one day he comes across a weird letter from some lady asking for help. At first he doesn't go, but then when his aunt and uncle are hung by the bad guys, he ends up going on an adventure with a crazy old man and a charismatic playboy. In the end, he blows up the villian's Death Train, effectively saving the day.

That's gonna be mighty hard to fit onto one page.

I bet you could fit it into 3...just avoid the temptation to make a prequel trilogy.

She mentioned she had to do it on one page, unfortunately.

Why not a cowboy dude who's cow or alcohol was stolen and he has to retrieve it from Bandit the Super Villain? Ok that's lame...
I'm not very good with anything about western, and having a one page limit is kinda short.
Could be a duel of shooting and both duellist's bullet hit each others when shot resulting in the universe being destroyed.
Yeah, don't take my advice actually.

Bwahaha!

And we couldn't tell it was Star Wars, because that's the plot of like every RPG ever.

Also, Grandma's looking pretty stacked.
