Full Story (http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/11/avatar.movie.blues/index.html)
James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.
On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.
"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."
tl;dr: Some people saw Avatar. They thought that Earth was so crappish compared to the luster of Pandora that they became depressed and suicidal.
I haven't seen the movie yet. I wouldn't know. I don't even think I have an opinion on this.
News happens.

That's silly.
... GOD everything stupid is happening in relation to that movie. The LGBT community is revolting against it, people are going suicidal over it and its wonderful graphics, nobody can decide whether the movie is that good or not, and people keep applying rule 34 to it. God damn ourselves! The movie was right, the Na'vi are way better than humans because they don't make porn of everything! For christ sake, we are all messed up humans! *Suicides*

I remember a distinct since of "UGH" when I left the theater and walked out into the endless parking lot under gray skies that won't blue up until sometime in April, so I think I know sort of where this idea is coming from. It's not the happy nature hippie themes of the film - it's just the concentration of colors thrown at you for three hours that implies the ground and skies shouldn't be quite so dull.
But still, that's silly.
-
they just need to invent some glasses that saturates all the colours. problem solved.
what has the gays offended? Also, don't forget the whole "ITS RACIST BECAUSE THE WHITE MAN HAS TO HELP THE DIRTY SPIRITUAL NATIVES" and "IT'S RACIST BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ENOUGH BLACK PEOPLE"
-
There's probably something sexist as well. Haven't seen the movie so I can't know.
These people should commit suicide for being depressed and suicidal because of a movie. Seriously, what the puck!? Yeah, earth sucks, humans suck, everything suck... but come on!
-
...
I say that if they want to kill themselves because of a movie, then please, GO AHEAD.
That means less stupid people in the world.
Fixd.
Really, suicide over a movie?
wtf dude

That reminds me of a little news update on Yoyogames, apparently someone whined because the default forum avatar was "male" (read: didn't have boobs), and as such was sexist.
So they changed it to their new logo.
Someone literally meaning one person.

yet another example of Human Stupidity, eh? Yeah... I think that sums it up quite well.

Whenw as the last time someone was inspired to become a super villain after seeing a movie? Man humans need to evolve longer.

Were in the process of evolving to that stage; the stupid ones are all committing suicide over Avatar, while the smart ones are having sex. I hope. Maybe. No, the stupid ones that like getting drunk and doing unprotected sex are the ones that are making babies, sorry.
-
Yeah these things sort themselves out.
Survival of the fittest. And already depressed people will perhaps take the final step after seeing pandora...
And as said, if the depressed and stupid people kill themselves - we won't have to bother taking care of their suicidal and stupid kids.
And it's not like people smash their computers after seeing terminator to prevent the day when skynet takes over.
-
ಠ_ಠ
-
I liked the movie but I didn't plan on offing myself because Earth sucks.
Avatar is such a big movie so people find more problems with and whine way too much about it instead of just watching it.
People wanting to die because of special effects, suddenly i'm reminded of that kid that broke away from reality for a week after watching the End Of Evangelion.
-
I, too, wonder why the LGBTI community would be offended. And 'racism due to not enough black people'? WTF?
I find it weird that most people on 4chan seem to support the main antagonist for 'defending his species'. Well, I guess he did, but it was morally wrong, and the humans could live without that mineral anyway. From what I've heard from the expanded universe it was only to build a magnet train system or some rubbish.
also kids shouldn't watch Evangelion

There's a high propensity they're just being trolls or something. You know, for the people who take the movie very seriously. Like, seemingly everyone.

Exactly what Bluhman said and most people on 4chan are morally wrong about everything.
Except for when it comes to kittens.

Hilarious!
-
Not really iterested in seeing this movie, but if people are getting suicidal, hmmm...
-
Makes me want to see it even less. God knows I'm paying too much for antidepressants as it is...
-
Very good point.
-
Either that, or they will raise the price to keep with their profit.
-
More suicide = less antidepressant resources being used = lower prices. If enough suicide, then there will be a surplus.
-
Whenw as the last time someone was inspired to become a super villain after seeing a movie? Man humans need to evolve longer.
It isn't a matter of genetics, it is a matter of stupidity. And stupidity isn't hereditary, it is a disease and apparently a terminal one.

I think I'm the one person in the world who didn't like Avatar.
(btw: Yay I can finally login!)
-
It's Ferngully with Night Elves instead of faries.
-
It's ****ing blue people.
-
It's ****ing blue people.
Correction: Blue CATLIKE people. But yeah, your right.
-
The DVD version has a blue cat-thing sex scene. I kid you not.
-
The semi-cutaway blue people sex scene was awkward enough in the theatre.

A LOT of people didn't like avatar. At the same time, a LOT of people loved it.
I thought it was OK. Trite story, but goregeous looking. It really lends itself to make a very unique experience in theaters, so it's very much a good idea to watch it on bigscreen. Otherwise, the overall writing of this movie is... Okay. It makes for an above-average movie, as well as one heck of a visual experience.
To sum it up; Front Mission VS. Night Elves.
-
For once, this monstrosity has managed to get my attention.
-
BUMP.
I just watched it.
it isn't great. It's okay at best, and awesome environments, but that's it. This movie is as good as Britney Spears.
I really hated the lack of character development.

I... I can't find a flawn in your logic... but it's still not right somehow...
I'll lose my sleep tonight trying to think an counterargument for this.

Sums up modern cinema and TV. =D

I enjoyed it. A bit disappointed that
they killed off Sigorney Weaver
, especially knowing that they be planning sequels.
She could always come back as an android
I mean they've done like what twice now?

Ugh, Alien Resurrection was ****ing horrible. I didn't mind Alien 3, but Resurrection...ugh.
-
One of these days I'll actually see the movie.
-
Which reminds me of The Mage.
