This is my second semester as a freshmen in a community college. I'm in a community college not by choice, but because it was my last chance after doing so terrible in high school. I'm now halfway through this semester and may not be able to get financial aid again next year because of my poor performance. I know this is all my fault, but it still sucks a lot. I don't look at myself as "just not cut out for school". I simply find it hard to get down to studying and doing homework. I'm so attentive in class, but as soon as class is over I don't do anything until the next class.
so, there are plenty of people on here doing great in college, how about the people who aren't? Not really sure what I'm getting at, just talk.
-
Yeah, I was doing so poorly in college when I was still attending. In the end, things were so bad that I just withdrew. Now, I'm an unemployed good-for-nothing.
My list of things to do on a daily basis is "search for job". That's basically it. After I've saved up some cash, I plan on trying out college again. No point in throwing away money that I don't have.
-
I'm pretty much you, Drenrin!
-
After you get out of high school and are pushed straight into college, it's extremely common to start slacking off. I went to a community college after high school too (It's actually a really good idea, since you can get your "basics" out of the way on the cheap and then transfer to a real school). I dropped out of College Algebra like three times, and got a C and a D in two government classes. Now that I actually take school seriously, I've been on the Dean's list five semesters in a row and got straight A's last semester.
What I'm saying is, now's your time to make mistakes, when you're at a cheap community college. You seem like a pretty smart guy. You just need to get in the habit of worrying about what will happen if you show up in class tomorrow without having done the homework or studied, so that you have some incentive to buckle down and get it done. If your friends are bugging you to hang out when you need to study, print out a sheet with all your class notes and make them quiz you over stuff.
And if you're worried that doing this bad in community college is going to screw your chances of transferring, you can make up for it. I was a mess in my first few semesters in community college, but I somehow got into a school where 95% of its students were in the 90th percentile GPA's of their high school. Working hard and improving will mean a lot more to prospective schools than just ace high school grades.
-
I'm planning on going to a state college. That way, if I slack off, we won't waste too much money. Like my father and more recently my sister did.
-
Im in my second semester as a freshman, and Im doing alright. Top in 2 of my classes, even though I am a total slacker, much like you Dren o.o
I expect this to not last long though.
-
I finished my 1st quarter of college at Santa Barbara quite a while ago.
4.0
I was like, "What the christ."
Judging by how I'm doing right now (despite ALL the GODDAMN WORK), I think I might very well be able to maintain that.
-
[bad humour]Well I know a few ladies who can do it for a price. Hahahaha...[/bad humour]
Seriously though the farthest I went was secondary 5 (or last year of high school) and I totally failed due to lack of motivation... I sure hope to get much farther, though, and plan on going back to school to complete my secondary 5, then to all the rest that follows. Some days...
-
I guess it doesn't help that I have no idea what I want to do or learn. =\ But thanks valiere, it's nice to hear that sometimes.
You wouldn't believe how many people I know that paid a lot (or rather their parents paid a lot) to get into these nice colleges, and then half way through the FIRST semester they dropped out, came back home, and went to the community college... then dropped out from THERE. It's astounding really, 'cuz these kids did really well in high school.
-
I'm sucking at school because I'm a stuck up prick.
:D
-
Finishing junior year, 3.92 GPA at an overpriced, private school (but I do love the people there). My trick is to do a lot of work.
I slacked off in high school and got good grades anyway. I was able to skate on natural intelligence, for a while. That started to fade pretty quickly when I got into college, so I just started studying more and doing more work. This steadily increased to the point that now I spend many nights doing nothing but work or studying.
Continuing to put in effort even when you hate it is a necessary skill to be successful. Part of college is to prepare you for doing things you hate, even in fields you love (even I hate coding sometimes :P). I've already gone through it with my current job as a web dev with our CS department; sometimes you are on a shitty project and just have to force yourself to continue to get it done on time.
I can't recommend any specific technique; my personal style is just gritting my teeth and doing it. It's worked thusfar. That's also the reason why I say that I cannot or can only barely work on Charas during school time.

3.2 GPA in first semester which was WAAY higher than mh highest high school GPA. Then I moved out and tried to support myself. Dropped two classes second semester to work more. Dropped a class third semester to work more. Quit. Can't find a job. Dropped a class this semester. 25% drop rate sucks. Using up all my savings looking for work. Mom won't stop claiming me as a dependent. Can't get financial aid.
Balls man.
-
I'll be honest- I've spent most of my life coasting.
University is really interfering with my way of life

I made the dean's list with a 4.0. I'm actually a bit disappointed I didn't get a 4.5.
-
Freshman year of high school. Last report card said I have a 3.0 GPA. I've been gliding through so far. Failed pretty hard at middle school, got into easy high school classes. For now, I'm fine getting through school with little to no effort. Lower classes, higher classes... It's all a waste of time. The latter just involves more work.
School just sucks. In general.
I really don't know where I'm going to go, or if I even want to touch college with a ten foot pole. I still have three more years of this ****... More school? Ew.
-
Beats working.
-
I was about to say I was glad I cleared colleged, but after reading Val's post, I felt repressed.
-
Beats working.
Keep telling myself this. It doesn't matter if I get a 4.0 GPA in college, I don't have the drive to find work.
Maybe I'll become a graduate student. At MIT. And work in physics and survive an extra dimensional alien attack.
-
Beats working.
I dunno. If I have to do stupid **** for people I hate, I'd much rather have a tangible reward. Feeling good and getting a diploma is nice, but wouldn't having a new TV or your own place be better?

I agree with Archem 100%.
Well, more like 60%...I do actually enjoy the egg-headness of university, but I also feel sometimes like I've been in school forever and want to try something else.

Man, minimum wage in Texas must be high.

Man, minimum wage in Texas must be high.
That's all I was thinking.
-
Missing the point.
-
well, personally, I don't mind the idea of going to college for a few years so I can get a good job. Plus, a part of me does enjoy learning new things.
-
I know university and college is really important, but don't you guys at least get the feeling that sometimes you want to get up and do something different? Take a couple years off school and do something cool?
I guess I don't wish I didn't go to university but I do sometimes feel really antsy with all the essays and everything.
(If you're wondering why I'm posting so much today, it's because I've been digging away at an essay and I get easily distracted on the computer)
-
I get where you're coming from. If my band hadn't of broken up and my bassist and saxophonists hadn't been such twats and we didn't suck loads of balls on our spare time instead of getting better, it'd be hard to choose between college and playing shows all over. I'm kind of serious about that too, I'd love to try other things, being in a small band and touring locally is a major one.
-
And work in physics and survive an extra dimensional alien attack.
... ... ... Now you have me intrigued...
-
Minimum wage in California is 8 flat, which seems cool until a one bedroom apartment is 900 at low. Barring of course gov't subsidied and such, but to be honest living in the ghetto isn't worth it.
-

Kinda depends. I picked that route and I ended up typing this from Afghanistan.
BTW Wazzup Charas.
-
Lol. To each his own. I'm actually in the Air Force.
-
This'll sound a little ironic but that's somewhat what my job is. I'm a Munitions Specialist (Ammo). I assemble the weapons we use to do that.
-
I'm three fourth's done with my Sophomore year at a State University. Grades aren't perfect, but they're fine.
Social life though: WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!, if you're not having a blast, you're most certainly doing something wrong. Go make friends.
-
Personally, I never let anything get in the way of school. I work 12 hours a week at 7.95 an hour doing **** work. After taxes that's $80. However, I do a lot better in school when I'm not having a psychotic episode, which happens when I build up too much stress over time. (Not fun.) If you want a life after this, finish school, regardless of anything else.
-
I'll let this speak for itself.

As far as work goes. . . . I'm pretty much high honors.
Unfortunately, college professors are unforgiving of absences, even when caused by actual for srs major illness, and I've missed about half this semester.
It is not a good way to go. Don't get sick in college, gaiz.
-
I have another week of no school I think.
Except everyone I know has to go to school this week or is still in highschool so during the day theres only a few things to do until I have to go to work.
Except everyone gets out of class by the time I go to work blah. I never really realized how restless I am only sleeping 2-3 hours a night and not going to school or work or seeing anyone right after its boring plus my care got ****ing messed up a little while ago so my current vehicle isn't just mine it kind of alternates.
But before my break from school I was going so/so not failing but just passing.
-
I was doing badly in university, then I decided to start again from step one with a different subject. Now I'm doing better tahn average.
-
Soooo....I think I just failed my stats exam. I pretty much spent half an hour writing out a pretty mark-heavy problem, to have the prof come up behind me and tell me I was doing it wrong. Unfortunately, I also did the last assignment using this method...
(Did I mention that I'm studying historical philosophy and science, and somehow stats is a required course?)
-
I actually just figured out today I passed my last exam. So woo!
-
Ugh, my exams start next week. Still doing good, so I'm not worried. But... Gets in the way of my game time <.<
(Did I mention that I'm studying historical philosophy and science, and somehow stats is a required course?)
You sure it is just not because you need a math course? Because that is rather odd.
I actually just figured out today I passed my last exam. So woo!
Congrats you.
-
You sure it is just not because you need a math course? Because that is rather odd.
We all thought it was odd, but they gave us a guilt-trip along the lines of "Do you think you know better than the professors who decided you need to take this course?"
(This is the same talk they gave us for the last three required courses that seemed to make no sense).
GL on your exams by the way.
-
I was doing so poorly in three of my classes I opted to drop them rather then take the hit on my gpa. -_- so much for taking college seriously.
Hopefully next semester will be better. I had a long talk with my advisor and she recommended some things I do to stay focused. I'm optimistic.
-
Pssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Dren. Why would you drop? F is MUCH manlier than W.
-
I took an F last semester, left a bad taste in my mouth. Though I must admit. I felt like a man.
-
I was the manliest man in the world. Everything I had was an F.
Wait, that's not so good...
-
I have an exam on Monday for which I can't find my course reader D:
EDIT: Wait, it was under my chair.
-
I only have finals in two classes, suckas.
-
I am abova ya'll. For I no longer have any school to do. Mwua- ha... ha.
-
Crap, so for that non-sensical statistics course, I did my final large assignment with a group (which is recommended by the prof). We all compared our answers, came up with the same ones, made a special trip to the library to work, and WE ALL FAILED. I need to ace the exam to pass this. UGH. And the ridiculous thing is- if I fail, I'll be failing by 1 or 2%....this course...that has nothing to do with my major...but is for some reason required.
-
Yikes. If you'd only be failing by 1-2%, you can probably meet with the professor and convince him/her to boost your grade up a little. You're an actress, right? Can you cry on cue?
-
I don't need to fake cry. I think if I fail this course NOT crying will be the challenge. UGH.
EDIT: Well, went down to see my TA today and I just barely passed! Although I got almost all of the questions on the final exam wrong, we got partial marks for trying. YEAH! Marks for effort!!!
