So I don't think this game is yet too known by all pseudo rpg forums. I've mentioned it here a couple of times, along with Xenoblade, but I am yet more thrilled for The Last Story than Xenoblade.
Okay, what is The Last Story?

(CHARACTERS large version here: http://i42.tinypic.com/takcav.jpg or in the link below)
It's a game by Mistwalker (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey) and by Nintendo. It's co-development FOR THE WII. This is also by the creator and director of the first 7 and in part of the 9th Final Fantasy games, Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is also, the head of Mistwalker. The game is an RPG intended to be a bit more down to Earth and leaving Sci-Fi out of the picture, and centered around human emotion. Now story specifics haven't been revealed too much other than "the game will take place on Ruri Islands, and the island is governed by Count Arganon, the island is located at the entrance of a harbor which serves as the only entrance to a mountainous continent." There's been tidbits on other stuff, that' I've read but I can't pull anything off from my head at the moment that'll be coherent, SO INSTEAD I'll give you the neogaf link:
IT'S WORTH TAKING A LOOK

IT'S WORTH TAKING A LOOK
Also music composer and the producer haven't been announced yet, however the score so far has been great.
For music samples you can go to the website
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/slsj/
For the full version of the song go to the updates section (or blog section) #5 (which is the gold seal)
If not you can see an awesome piano-only fan made version here:

Now, why should this game matter to an RPG fan or game? I don't know. But I do know why it is for me.
1) It's bringing back some elements that I think get overlook by some RPGs today. Example; a lot of the RPGs now adays are more science fiction oriented than what like some games gives me in an rpg. Now that isn't bad, I loved my Xenosaga and my Xenogears (somewhat), but I think what amde some of the early RPGs great was less focus on sci-fi. Good example was Chrono Trigger, it had technology but it didn't focus on it for the effect. I think that's why I always liked Tales games.
2) It's from the creator of the Final Fantasy series. No, not Square Enix, I mean the person, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Now Final Fantasy games have been for me like a guilty pleasure or a sour sweet taste in my mouth. At least for the first 5, maybe sliding 6 in there, but from 7 and on, yuck. For me anyway. Anywho, The creator and director of the first FF games is making this game, and according to him, this is his life's bet or something. He's said that he has all in on this game. Now a lot of people say about this game, but this guy has even defended his game when FF fans have lashed at him saying it's an FF rehash. I have no doubt that this game will have a Final Fantasy feel, I mean it does already, the name and music say a lot about that. But I still haven't seen or felt much ot quite be honest about that. However, Neither does Square Enix or the Final Fantasy team have stated negative feelings for the game, it all they seem to respect it. I say it's prolly because of Sakaguchi. So the guy has TONS of great RPG experience.
3) Nintendo's is co-developing. Yes I am a Nintendo fan. But for a company that been so long in the business and does so many great games that have touched a lot of my years, I more than should be. If you don't think Nintendo makes good business, then I won't argue with you cause you're like nuts. Anyway, I am not entirely sure if it's exactly a good thing, HOWEVER, Nintendo rarely dissapoints. So i am anxious to know what teams they had in there.
4) It's an RPG. I wub RPG games. And I got to say that lately I haven't played alot of them, save for Final Fantasy 13, which I am about to finish. So maybe I should say, I haven't played RPGs in a while that I felled in love with. Last one I remember was Symphonia, and Xenosaga before that. (okay I am lot into JRPGs) Although the battle systems has been shortly discussed, i have a feeling it'll be something fresh in that field. Story? Haven't known much about it, but from the art I've seen and the pictures, since they tell thousands of words, I can tell it well at least be worth while. That's what I can tell, it might be worse, or maybe the best ever told. Also I love the music! I don't know who's making it yet, but I have my assumptions.
Anyway that's my feelings on this game. Also, undoubtly there are people who think this is just a Final Fantasy rehash or attempt. Now I thought that too, but since this is from the creator of the series, for some reason that nullifies in my head. I am not entirely sure, but I think Final Fantasy and the Last Story were named by the same guy. So I think the names just correlates to how he names games. I mean Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are straight out there names too. Sides unles this reaches a 5th sequel then I wouldn't worry too much about it.
TL;DR:
So yeah, The Last Story. I am anxous. And this thread is probably to ease that a bit :P
Oh and also again, take a look at Xenoblade.
-
Congratulations, you made me want this... badly.
Although I can't shake the feeling that "Last story" and "Final Fantasy" pretty are two phrases pretty synonymous of each other.
-
Looks interesting if not a tad of a generic character cast. Unless the dude is like Flay and yells "THIS IS FOR JUSTICE! HAHA!" Can't get enough of those types. XD It seems games these days are sheepish when trying to step outside the norm and predictable.

yeah I know, a lot of people can't, but Final Fantasy producer said that ""It's a very Sakaguchi-san-like title."
So i guess the director likes name synonyms from past works

XD The only beef I have with the only characters shown is the guy. He. Has. No. Shirt. The fudge. I hope it's just a cool way to put the art though.

I had not heard of it, but it is /exactly/ what I miss about RPGs, and have been craving for some time.
But gosh darn, the brother creature is taking the Wii when he moves in 6 months.
Perhaps I can buy it off him by then. Mwahaha.
-
Really you had me at "RPG for the Wii." Fact that it also looks cool is a bonus.
-
Bah, finally had a look. I don't find it appealing. I like my RPGs to be at least somewhat down to earth.

This is down to earth.
-
Dragon Age didn't have technology XD
But I digress I played quite a few new rpgs with no technology guess you just have to search for them.
This doesn't seem I dunno it seems boring. But I may try if the same guy that made Final Fantasy 6 is making this.
-
Down to earth? Curses!
-
This looks amazing and nostalgic. I wish I had a Wii now.
-
Okay some in game shots, finally.
These are all links to go nintendo but whatever

The game is looking pretty good; better than I thought it would.

So Japanese it BURNS
-
So Japanese it BURNS
Well that's a super power I never thought the Japanese had.
-
Card crusher ftw?
-
BUMP because the first trailer has appeared:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDJ5eMkHkj4
It's looking better than I thought. See how it turns out.
-
That trailer did nothing to make me not think that it looks like the ultimate cliche.
That being said, it does look kind of fun.
The battle system looks interesting, to say the least.
-
It looks pretty good. And the battle system looks interesting to say.
Not FFXII
Not Dragon age
And not monster hunter.
But perhaps something inbetween. We'll see for sure later on.

Some more updates... some more screens and character art!
And I am loving both!
Art: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=22694002&postcount=2563
Screens:

I really love the design and feel of the game. it's so tight. I HOPE it gets localized.
-
Well those looks great, not sure about the girl with the exposed belly though, don't seem like a good idea when you're a fighter. But hey - fanservice is fanservice.
Looks great, hope they release it over here. For some reason some games just don't make it to the stores.
-
this reminds me of a slightly convoluted final fantasy clone that (to its own credit, but not enough to make me want it) tries to make itself a bit less effeminate and sci-dork...but the music is uninteresting. The battle theme especially may as well have been a direct FF riff. Perhaps my mind will change, but this looks stupid.
-
I honestly have to agree with Gem on this one, I can't see myself buying this...I've been burned way too many times buying FF type stuff lately.
Except for Lost Odyssey, which I can say I honestly like, despite there being 4 discs for basically graphics.
-
Last Story.
Final Fantasy.
I see the connection.
-
The creator is this , is the creator of the original Final Fantasy games. So yeah, resemblance is obvious.
Also, this might be his last game. Or more like, will be.
Also battle wise, it's free roam, first and third person play mixed. So its not like final fantasy.
-
Final Fantasy was supposed to be Square's last game. Then it ended up being super-popular, so they made sequels. Lots of sequels.
-
Yep, but he says he's gonna retire after this (he's old), as for his current team though, they've said that if the game hits, they might work on another one.
Though, recently, it's been going that he didn't say that. That what he meant to say was that he was working on this as if he was going to retire.
It's PR really. Either way, I still trust this game to do wonders. Specially being a co-Nintendo game.
Also it's rumored that they cancelled Cry-on for this game.
-
There's been a lot of updates since August (multiplayer, screenshots, magic system, wii bundles, boxart, release date)
But recently it was unveiled that Nobuo Uematsu is the music composer. Which is sweet. There had been rumors going about since june, but yay.

Good old Nobs
He's up there near Koji Kondo and Dave Wise.
Ahh, Dave...
-
I forgot to add the trailer for the most recent.
Which btw, worries me a little.
From the looks of the trailer I caught some similarities between this and FF13 and FF9 along with some cliche lines.
Good music though.
-
I'm more of a Yasunori Mitsuda fan myself.
-
I don't mind it reminding me of FFIX, FFIX-rippoff with a more intense battle system wouldn't hurt a bit.
Although a new FFXIII would be bad. It was okay.
-
Game is wrapped up.
There was a conference where nthey showcased tons of footage.
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/11665869
Its in japanese, but the gameplay could still be enjoyed.
-
Love this comment:
"tebian: Next time your on English site why not trying to not insult us with no sub titles even. "
And this still looks great. Feels like the Wii got a lot of semi-graphic, neat gameplay games this year.
-
'eh.
I still don't think it looks OMFGASM, but it does look like it'd be a good rent.
