Title: Doodles and Doodads
Post by: fruckert on August 11, 2010, 06:44:55 AM
I've been drawing stuff other than weapons recently, figured "Can't get better without criticism, and everybody I know IRL is too ****ing nice."

Isn't it obvious?
I've also taken to drawing other universes characters in my universe as a versatility test (I kinda figure this is a bad idea...), which I'll show later, when I'm actually happy with them.

ed: I have no clue what the whitespace is about...I took it on my phone, if that helps.

For some reason, I really like that pose. Didn't know what Slenderman was until I saw the TV Tropes article, and the article illustration there is much creepier. But somehow this still manages to be pretty creepy on its own.

This bastard is supposed to be a captured spirit that butlers over your extra-dimensional "home" area, which also functions as a bank, crafting center and whatnot. I'm trying to make him look like he simply does not like working for the smug little bastard who has him work your every whim.
He's very obviously based off of Doc Scratch from Homestuck. Other influences are there, also, but I can't quite remember their names.

ed: his left arm isn't yet drawn because I can't figure out the angle.
edos: Changed the spoiler name, because I just remembered his actual name.

Why haven't I noticed this thread before?  Good show, chap.

Also: Is it bad if I see (actually, pretty much all my life) things which predict bad things in dreams?  As in I see them and I know it's going to be a nightmare?  One looks quite a bit like Slenderman...

Narrowing the shoulders will probably fix a few problems.
Title: Re: Doodles and Doodads
Post by: Phayre on November 11, 2010, 06:03:42 PM
Narrow the shoulders, and separate her helmet/goggles/whatever they are from the head, rather than using a continuous line.
Rounding her face and chin more should help make her look less old, too.

Also her boobs. Unless she's naked you shouldn't be able to see the inner curve of her bust. Shirts tend to go straight across from the most outward point. And her left one is lower than her right one

With a passion.

Also her boobs. Unless she's naked you shouldn't be able to see the inner curve of her bust. Shirts tend to go straight across from the most outward point. And her left one is lower than her right one
I have no idea why I've never noticed this before...
Thanks for the tip.

Alright, and alright.
I usually start with the lightbulb head first and work my way down.
The shoulders on this one for some reason went WAY wider than I intended.

Go on DA.
Go to their stock models.
Gaze upon the boobies and draw them. Repeatedly.
Man, I see boobies every day, because they are attached to my chest, and still, the exact balance between beach ball and dead sack often eludes me.

Nice drawings :p  Like a lot of people, you're better at robots and other inorganic stuff than you are humans, but that style suits you (actually reminds me of that cartoon network sort of art style).  The woman's the worst one, but you've got plenty of tips to help with that.

I find that drawing a comic helps you get better at drawing fast because you work out what you want the characters to do and then have to try and draw it, meaning that you attempt a wider range of poses than the generic 'standing' poses that you draw when you just think of the character.  You don't have to post it or anything if that's not your thing, but I'd still recommend drawing one.

Alternatively, the style could just suck forever. Some comic artists never get any better really.

I'm currently trying to master basic anatomy.
Which isn't going too well.
I've gotten myself into kind of a rut with how I draw...damn muscle memory.

I am getting a tablet next month, though, so I'll actually at least TRY to do some more decent lineart. [using skeletons. I don't use base forms in most of my crap, which is probably why they look so...unique]
Until then, there is ONE other thing that I did which is actually very basic, but I like it anyways.
I'll go find it.

Man, should've seen that coming.
Charas+boobs=recipe for disaster.

Anyway. Another way to get better at drawing quickly is gesture drawing. Just look at something and draw it; don't look at the page much, if at all, and don't focus on detail. Do the whole thing in less than 5 minutes, and avoid outlines.
Seriously the best way to improve your sense of creating depth and shape on the fly, in my opinion.

That thar is an eight-bit structure drawn out in black and white pixels.
By hand.

Mostly.
Lots of copy-paste.

Still though, working bottom-top, each row represents the binary number for the number of the row.
So, row 201 will look like:
white white black black white black black white

Why yes, I haven't slept all night and was extremely bored, why do you ask?

I've been mulling over how exactly to tell this story, and I'm thinking "serialized novel" might work.
Basically I'd post chapters as they come.

Does anybody know of any literary sites that I'd be able to post to to get more exposure?
Like, writing forums etc.
I think the actual story(s) will go up on Deviantart, but I'd like to get more than friends and family to give it a look and tell me what I suck at. Because friends and family are bad at that.

Ed: Jesus christ non-retarded looking cat people are hard to draw.
New respect for the khajiit, man.

I tried drawing Cat and he looks like a bat.

I've been wanting to try a vector style for Kyoob, but the problem is I don't know how to program in Flash, nor do I want to learn.
The solution would be to draw with primitives in XNA, but that's overcomplicated.
I could also draw with a blank texture, but that doesn't seem very optimized to me.

So, I've been working on a tileset for a prototype project, and this is the test image that I made up.

It looks like Zelda because it's based off of Zelda.
Other than that, I'm going to play my cards close to my chest, because I've learned my lesson about counting your chickens before they've hatched.

If people're wondering about Kyoob, the answer is no.
I haven't been satisfied with Kyoob in, like, ever, so it's on the shelf indefinitely.
I bring that up because of the above post.

Yeah, it practically is Zelda.

Zelda's a lot more detailed, but yeah it's a prototype I'm not trying to sell it, whatever.
