Title: So I'm looking for a new laptop...
Post by: Linkforce on August 14, 2010, 06:13:22 PM
Because this one has outlived its lifespan.......3 years -_-
The one I have now is a DELL Inspiron 1525.  In the last year I've had it, it's made my blood pressure rise significantly, lose many of my homework files, and almost woken up my neighbors by how loud it roars.  It gets super hot super fast, and the battery last all of 6 seconds when unplugged.  I just had a conversation with my dad and he said that if I pay half, he'll match it and I can get a new laptop!!
Wahoo!!!
This is where I need you, Charas.

I need a computer that is quiet.  I need one with a decently large screen.  It needs to have a decently large memory and a good battery life.  It needs to support my RM2k3 files (Which probably doesn't take up too much memory), and just needs to be accessible and reliable, and not crash on me so much!!
I also need a good anti-virus program so I can protect my new laptop as soon as I get it.

With that in mind, let me know what you suggest and think is the best match for me!  FYI, you can't choose a mac lol.
Also, what anti-virus program do you suggest?  Thanks Charas!

If your only concern is RPG maker you'd do fine with a netbook, or any low-budget laptop, really. As for antivirus, I'd reccomend Microsoft Security Essentials.

An inexpensive model you can get with some quality is ACER netbooks; good for rudimentary computer stuffs, but not much beyond that (heck, I get slight control lag when I play Cave Story on it.) Probably does fine with RPGMaker, and it is very compact. Never had any problems with mine. For security, I'd recommend A squared for antivirus (Maybe MSE could do you better, as A-squared requires you to scan manually, and can take a while to clear a scan, but it is THOROUGH), and perhaps Spybot to back that up for spyware and malware. Both are completely free off the net.

Well I'll continue to look around but so far the only laptops that I like are......Dells x_x
But it's a different model (Studio 15) so it's not all bad. I'll check out ACER though!

In my experience, the absolute best program for actual scanning is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It's a resource hog though, so I only run it monthly. MSE is more of a passive thing, for keeping viruses from doing compromising things, and for scheduled scanning. Both are totally free.

Not sure, not sure if macs were popular enough during the 2003s.

If you get a macbook you can just bootcamp Windows onto it, or use Crowssover to boot Windows apps in the Mac OS. It's more than likely to work, RPG maker isn't exactly a demanding program.

But it got lots of things that can go wrong.
