Title: Muraiko's Art Gallery
Post by: Muraiko on August 17, 2010, 10:52:59 PM
Since I'm in an Art College, gaining criticism on my work would be most beneficial. For the most part, these will be made up of characters in my own personal art style.

Rokuma first drawn by hand, then painted digitally. (Photoshop is SO useful! I wish I had it when I was creating my face portraits for The Epitome of Anima... That would have made things easier by a long shot...)

A different drawing of Rokuma that emphasizes his facial expression.

Where is his feet...?  and arms...?

Other than that it looks nice.  The second one is really nice.

He's wearing long robes to cover them. (Or you could say I was lazy...)

Thank you. The second is actually one of my favorites compared to my others. I'll be posting up more soon.

Arms usually reach down to the hip and tighs. So at least his right arm is missing. Looks interesting otherwise.

You seem to have good controll over pencil shading, somthing I knew a few pepole have a hard time mastering. I find your first digital art picture quite interesting XD Remind me of Kabuki figure...Only missing his hands and legs ^ ^; Ehtier way wonderfull art work! Hope to see more.

Draw a bishounen next!
Which could mean any male protagonist from any Final fantasy game.

Yes, I have little experience with body proportions as I tend to favor faces more. I'll work on more full bodied figures.
Rokuma's neck thickness may have been overemphasized as I wanted to make him look more butch. His trapezious neck muscles may also contribute to his neck looking too thick.

Draw a bishounen next!

No. Though I will post one of my first female attempts.

Her body proportions are quite wrong, but the main forcus was her face at the time. I'll have to try a full body drawing of her sometime.
I also tried my best to avoid a "manga-ish" look. Her nose is bigger than a wedge and her mouth isn't squished horizontally. Unfortunatly, I think her head shape and eyes still look like manga.

A nude sumo character.

Thank you for the comments so far! I really appreciate it!

I rather like the face on that girl. It's much more natural and does detract from manga quite a bit. The guy seems a bit out of proportion on some parts. His face is also really well done though. You're shading is really good on both of them. I'm not an art major, but I do like what I see so far. It seems to me just a few adjustment and more practice will do you good. (and maybe some more serious critical opinion from a more qualified person. =P)

I hear what you mean. I'm still working on proportions. From what I've read, an adult human is supposed to be eight heads tall, but that just seems very exaggerated. I personally haven't seen anyone that tall... I first tried five heads, but then boosted it up to six heads hoping that it'll look more real. Here's what I got for measurements after some studying.

WARNING! FAT MAN IN SPEEDO!

And before this thread gets too homoerotic, here's the japanese girl about to undress. (No Shading)

BTW, What parts of the Sumo look out of preportion in particular, Dren?

That arm is way too short. If he's holding it straight down, it should come down to at least mid-thigh.
EDIT: Woah, also, that knee is way too high. He would look really weird walking.

<-- Is not an art major of any sort.

It might not hurt to focus on the joints a bit. The inside of the knee and elbow aren't very pronounced, and out of context, don't look like they could bend at all. The man's *** also seems shockingly underrepresented. As a fat-*** myself, I should know. You've got a good thing going with faces, though. Ears seem slightly too large, but that might just be me.

That arm is way too short. If he's holding it straight down, it should come down to at least mid-thigh.

It's because of his fists. If he extends his fingers out, then it would be mid-thigh.

@ Archem: Thanks for bringing up joints! I'll definatly look into that. I think his ears are the right size, from the eye brow to between the upper lip and nose. I might just need to shift it up. Also, I'm not so sure about making his butt bigger... 0_0

I don't usually draw the inner skeleton. Too messy, too time consuming and too much erasing. Though I know it will help out. I learned how to draw heads just by simply drawing and not making the general shape first, so I suppose I hoped to learn bodies the same way. I will try it though, thanks!

You're getting much better dude. Keep at it :D

But I entirely agree with what lucas said. If you want to get better you're going to have to plan the body posture out with lines, circles and what not. I suggest reading the books by Andrew Loomis. (*You can get them through the net via google.) Sure it may be a bit sketchy at first, but at least it'll help you out (especially when you want to get things in perspective)

Decided to take a break from learning anatomical proportions and tried digital painting again. It sucks not having photoshop at home (GIMP can only go so far...) and sucks even more that I have to use the scanner at school...

Work in progress. Still need to do a bit more shading with his skin and I might also want to add some body hair later on.

EDIT: Added more facial hair on him, shaded a bit more of the skin and rotated his eye brow a bit.

Well, I have to say that I do like your style very much. And I hope to see you improve more, =3. I would recommend PaintNet being as it has a pentool AND a curvetool. It would make the lines more bolder, takes time to get use to it but meh. TBH, everyone has their own style so it's really up to you. =3

Man, that guy. He's pretty badass. I'm somewhat envious of your ability to draw middle-aged guys and make them actually worth looking at.

I really like the second to latest one.

I take it you're not drawing people in your work at your art college, right?  No offense, it just seems more amatuer standard than fine art standard.

Having said that, it's a nice style and you draw that middle aged guy well.  You need to do lots more life drawing now (or start if you haven't life drawn before; you might be able to get it through the college) and you'll get better and better.

Yeah, I wasn't aiming for the most life-like drawing ever. I major in Animation so I'll be dealing more with cartoons than fine arts. I do make life drawings too though since it does help with any type of drawing.
