After nearly 13 years of development time, Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete.
The game was on display at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend in Seattle. Texas-based Gearbox Software confirmed they finished development of the title. Studio president Randy Pitchford said during a presentation the game is in the final polishing stages, and is coming in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It will have a single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer.
"We couldn't let the Duke die," Pitchford told the crowd.
First announced in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever was originally planned as a sequel to the 1996 hit Duke Nukem 3D. Since then, however, the game has famously suffered from continuous development delays, leading many to wonder if Duke would ever see the light of day.
For nearly a decade not much was seen or heard about the project until things began to heat up in May 2009 when rumors surfaced of 3D Realms' closure. That same month, publisher Take-Two filed a lawsuit against 3D Realms/Apogee Ltd for breach of contract.
Studio co-founder George Broussard soon spoke out saying that due to a lack of funding the Duke Nukem Forever team was let go, but 3D Realms would remain open in a much smaller capacity. A courtersuit claim was filed against Take-Two a month later.
The lawsuit and countersuit were finally settled this past June, paving the way for the game to be released. Duke Nukem Forever again made headlines last month when rumors began that Gearbox Software had taken over control of the game.
IGN is on the show floor playing the game right now. We'll be posting our impressions later today.

Whoever did that either has balls, or is an Atheist. Although if he was the latter, it wouldn't make sense to me/
-
...wait. WHAT?
-
Kij, blasphemy was cutting edge and ballsy in the 90s, and even then it was on its way out.
-
This is Duke Nukem man. What are you talking about?
-
Yeah, that's why I listen to Journey. Don't stop believing.
-
Who else has been listening to the Duke Nukem 3D theme for four hours straight? I know I have.
-
Is the breeze making my feet chilly, or did hell just freeze over?
-
Well I stopped listening to DOUK at the 6 hour mark. I think that's enough for the day
-
Kinda makes me feel bad that we've been stuck with Master Chief as our #1 tough-guy shooter hero. I love him (or, rather, the games he stars in), but with DNF finally releasing, that is one doomed space marine.
-
Oh crap. I guess I better start finish a game then...
-
Heh, well, if there are any baseball fans here.
Chinese Democracy was released, DNF is coming out... and the CUBS still haven't won the world series.
Anyone think this will be HUGELY anticipated and sell well... or will completely flop?
-
I don't care if everyone in the world says it sucks. I'm buying it. At this point, it's like a gaming legend. You have to own one or you're missing out on something magical.

You have to own one or you're missing out on something magical.
Isn't that what they said about Furbies?
-
Furbies ate babies. Duke does not. Therefore, I'll be buying Duke.
-
I saw this yesterday and one thing came to mind.

Yay Duke Forever is out.
...
Too bad I dislike the series as a whole.

Blasphemers! Remove yourselves from my sight!

I could almost respect this opinion, with a bit of extrapolation. I don't know how you couldn't like it though.
DN1 was a great adventure, simple as it is now, with a man who likes his Oprah going off to save the world from the evil Dr Photon. **** was crazy.
DN2 expanded on this a lot, from what I can remember. The graphics improved a whole lot, too.
But DN3D I don't know how anyone could not like. It had a nice array of weapons AND items and the level design is one of those most touted aspects of the game. And you add in that whole parody of a genre and the summarisation of 80s heroes and stuff, it's all good.
I like most of what I hear about DNF though. They brought back Allen Blum, who did most of the levels from Episodes 1 and 2 of DN3D. 3DRealms handpicked Gearbox to own the Duke Nukem IP, and Randy Pitchford, Gearbox President, was a former member of 3DR, to the extent that he actually worked on DN3D back in the day. My only concern is the consolatisation that has happened already - what with Duke only having two weapons at once. But hopefully that can be fixed (on the PC version).
Thats pretty much how I feel except that I never played a single game
That's just dumb
-
I'm not a fan of the series. Why? Simply because I've only played one of the game; Time to Kill. Hard to like a whole series when you only tried one of the games, eh. Why? I'm not sure, I suppose I didn't have any opportunity to try any other or something. I suppose I should try one of them games some day.
I did like Time to Kill, though.
-
oh, that's one of those PS1 exclusive games.
I forgot they existed. I played a port of DN3D on the playstation, once. It had no ability to use items.
Think about that for a second.
-
Ouch.
-
Start caring, dammit!

Just play the damned game, Lucas. It's so damn old, even your wreck of a computer could handle it.
-
ITT Little kids not caring about game classics.
No offense meant, but these games came out when Lucas was probably 5 years old, or younger.
I remember, back in the very early 90's, I only had 3 games for the old, DOS/Win32 computer. Duke Nukem (Ep1), Commander Keen (Ep1) and Captain Comic. To this day, I love all three of those games.
While I never really enjoyed Duke 2 as much as the first, when Duke 3D came out, I was blown away. At that point, Doom was still the best FPS I had ever played, and DN3D had better graphics, better gameplay, cooler weapons, strippers, drugs, swearing, and at 13 or so... that was all pretty damn cool. The game had such great comic relief.
You really should give them a try. They're classics, almost to the level, in my mind, of Sonic or Donkey Kong.

Man I was similiarly raised with Dat Keen, Duke 1 and 2 and a whole lot of apogee games.
But man, Duke 2 was super sweet. It was like Duke 1, but with BETTER GRAFIX and uh
to be honest I don't remember much at all.
