Just played it for a while. The game does a pretty good job of getting the old Sonic vibe in all but one aspect: Gameplay. specifically, they aren't using the physics of the original trilogy. This means no momentum, which in turn means if you go downhill in ball form you don't get speed, which in turn means this DOESN'T PLAY AS SONIC AT ALL.
Also, the soundtrack is bad. They put a few songs from the orignal games, such as the finishing level tune or the immortality theme, but all the original music is just... bad. It's not terrible, just bad. Unmemorable.

Really? How could they have fucked that up? I swear, they do it on purpose.
-
The music isn't too bad. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GER4CRENb1A&feature=related) It just wasn't imagined correctly. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCtXDkMX9Ss)
E: Allegedly, this is by the same people who did the Sonic Advance games. Baffling, because physics and everything worked just fine in those games.

Gameplay IS the game - everything else is just pretty fluff. Replace "gameplay" with "the game itself" in any sentence you see it and you'll end up with a less confusing statement. Try it on badly-written reviews for fun and amusement!
Anyway, I gave up on Sonic like a decade ago when we entered the 3D era and apparently that meant running around really blocky environments with bad europop playing in the background. Can't we just all admit that Sonic was never all that great of a series at this point? You run fast, and it's kind of cool to run fast, but then you run into a bad guy, lose all your rings, and get sort of a buzzkill in the process.

I don't know. Sonic Rush was on pair with Sonic 1, IMO, but the problem is that SEGA just tries to make everything 'modern' and 'hip'. So new games have hip-hop songs, are pseudo-dark (protip: you can't have a dark plot with a primare-color coded cast of talking cute animals), and try to keep up with the 'new audience'.
Bad idea.
If they really want to try and make games that are hip and dark and everthing, forget Sonic and start anew. You can do it right, SEGA, just look at Bayonetta. If you do try to make Sonic games, take Nintendo's example and don't change it's style. Have happy (and simple) songs, bright colours, almost no dialogue, don't add unnecessary gameplay elements (homing attack could be a powerup item, not a default action), etc.
-
Sometimes I think the franchise is just cursed. Even a normally-reliable company like Bioware can't make Sonic into a decent game.

SEGA didn't make Bayonetta though, they only published it. Most of the people who actually worked on it are ex-Capcom and Clover employees.

Sonic & Knuckles = Best Sonic.

And here we have fans giving developers a run for their money.

Too bad that's pre-rendered and not an actual fan-project :/

I... agree. I mean, I did like Sonic before. But never really been a fan of it. I hated when I lost all my freaking rings and could only get a few back. Or even worse when I couldn't get a single one back. And no saving... or at least those I played.

I hate the no saving.

Sonic 3 and Sonic 3&K had save files.

Yeah, only played Sonic 1 and 2. Mostly 2. Which didn't have that feature. it's mainly the ring thing, though...
