Title: What I've been up to
Post by: Moosetroop11 on October 30, 2010, 05:12:27 PM
I have been up to creative stuff over the time I've been away. One of them is 3D modelling stuff. What do you guys think of this airship? It's supposed to be a sort of lived in, fantasy airship. Criticism is most welcome although I'm not sure when I'll be able to model again as I was doing it at uni so I might not be able to make any suggestions a reality just now...

"That's one badass airship" were the exact words that I was going to type even before I scrolled down to see Lucas's comment. I do believe we have a winner here.

That's rad! Love the hanging laundry.

Excellent! Very nicely made.
Only thing my architectural designer anal crap face would change is the cabin; I'd make the sides of that cabin tapered inward. Otherwise, it's excellent, with all those great details in texture and geometry.

I would shrink the UVs on the side of those 3Dwood planks, because you can see the nail part of the texture, where logically there wouldn't be nails on every side

When you're going to flying through the sky on a ship hammered together with wooden planks, you add more nails than is strictly necessary.

If I wanted a 3D airship, that would be the one I'd pick. Bravo!!!!!

Really nice airship!  But I would add some more... practical things.  Like the 20mm to defend against pirates or seagulls.  (Those beaks will tear a balloon skin in seconds!)

Or defense against wolves. A wolf has a much stronger bite than a seagull!

Thanks :p Yeah the textures are mine out of photos and stuff, but I was a bit rushed so I wasn't able to worry about the sides of the planks and things like that. You're right of course, it does look odd :p

I would set it on fire. Nothing wants to mess with fire.

Shrink or enlarge?

But yes, you are right... Unless whoever made that airship was really high. Which could be true, judging by the random wood planks sticking out of it, anyway. :P
Shrink. If he enlarges them, they'll repeat the texture and if he hasn't made it seemless, it'll look terrible. That, and the nails would repeat too, and he should want no nails on the side.

Also, Moosey old boy old chum, no pressure, but there are some people who have been stuck in a jailcell with a ventilation shaft for a year or two now...

The laundry hanging is a nice touch.  The blimp's cloth is a touch too plain.  The white makes it look a bit like most 3D sculpting program's default grey texture.  Can't say I'm really sure what the portholes with the enormous bronze frames are.  The overlapping boards stick out a bit too far and generally look too "square".  Like they don't mould to the shape of the hull.

To say it would look at home in a game any newer than The Elder Scrolls 4 would be a bit of a stretch, but I suppose accounting for the fact that you're just one fellow and you're not backed by a high-budget company like Bethesda it's not bad, especially if you're new to modeling.

You're right XD actually I wanted to start again at one point but I found it a pain with the lack of time plus a nasty old version of drawplus making everything hard.  I had to draw glin and Mark from scratch using the old comics as reference which was horrible too.  You thinks I should try and continue though? I have most of the next episode too.

Then I shall! I won't be uploading them to drunkduck for now though.  Really can't be bothered with all that at the moment.

Do my tired eyes deceive me? Is this new EpicA?

Truly, our messiah has returned.

Now then, I need to stop moping about because of my dead cat. Unfunny Comics isn't going to match up to the competition on its own.

I hope that one character I liked was back. You know the one. Was pretty cool.
