Charas-Project

I know that Charas is a social environment more than anything these days, and I like that, but I used to get genuinely
interested in seeing people's games. I still am. I'd love to see some cool games posted up or something. Are people
currently working on games?
Does anyone else think it would be bad if we all started working on games to spice the whole inspiration level up a little?
-
For me at least, it's a bit daunting a task to complete a game.
It's hard to make anything with default systems fun, and not repetitive, but doing custom systems is a bit beyond my grasp at the moment.
-
Not mention extremely unfun and boring
-
Yeah, that too.
I find making characters, story, and setting to be fun. And designing maps and things like that is fun too.
All the actual RPG gameplay creation, though, is horrible.
-
The RPG creation is the easy part. I tend to get horribly bogged down in the graphics and stuff. I can sprite anything, but not exactly quickly. Sometimes it would be faster to code an entire dungeon than sprite a few more characters.
-
Yes, that too. I'm only making ten or so custom sprites in my game (granted, all with poses and shtuff) but even just those ten I'm dreading more than anything.
Nevermind making every single NPC. I don't know how some people do it.
-
I may start back on a game but my stories are never good, I can sprite what have have you and little coding but i just can't do stories.
I think my western game had the best story I've done. But resources were a b*tch to get a hold of.
Who knows, I'll think of something maybe. Nothing ever as good as half you guys do.
-
=(
Don't be so down on yourself. Story isn't everything. Awesome game play is awesome.
-
I'm currently working on a game for RPGMaker.
but yeah, I think it'll be some time before i can make a decent experience. I still have to keep
editing what I already have, and making new sprites, and long scripts are horrible.
To me, anyway.
-
For me it's just time. If I barely have time to come on charas and put together an EpicA episode then I definately can't open up rm2k3 and poodle about for hours. I am making games, but at uni and stuff.
-
Yeah, my game's really monotonous to make. You can't just make fun stuff. It's all
about making menus work and not glitch out and using variables. I've already got over
300 pictures and 200 variables or something stupid like that, and it's not even in the
state for a demo to be released!
-
My variable use climbed steadily from 500 to 1000+. :/
Its not too bad tho, progress is cool.
-
I'll post when I have something worth posting.
I have a stat system for an RPG in the drafting stages, but the main hurdle with making said RPG is a lack of art assets (and people to make them) and programming experience.
Also, Kyoob ran into a brick wall regarding enemy design, although once that's done with, I'll probably make a new topic seeing as that last one blows.
-
Why not have a quick game design contest? Give everyone two weeks to make a game, then showcase here? Have a few members judge, winner is crowned Hero of Charas?
-
Game contests with time limits like that have failed previously, though.
-
But without a time limit, games would not be completed :/
-
three weeks to a month might be more reasonable, but it's not a bad idea. Three weeks would bring us right into christmas.
-
They'd be like little Christmas presents :3
-
Ive found from experience that the lack of a prize is often what leads to contestfail.
Ill personally purchase a fifty dollar gift mastercard or something if we could get like...an actual contest of full games with a definitive winner, and runner up and some other entries. Just saying...I dont have bags of money to throw around....but if it got some games made...details would have to be discussed.
Somebody else would have to manage the contest though. I would rather throw some money at something...Im not even blowing smoke here...make some games...Ill give the winner some money or a gift certificate or something
-
I wouldn't mind managing it if need be. I'll have lots of free time this quarter. Unless a staff member would rather manage it, of course.
-
let me give this some thought and hear ideas...see how much interest and effort is generated by the prospect of money.lol
-
Yeah no screw it, I could manage the contest as well.Im gonna do this....let me brainstorm a bit and Ill make a proper thread
its fifty bucks canadian mind you...
-
My games progress on Valve Time. (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time)
-
Canadian dollars are worth more than american dollars. xD
-
Still, I remember when the American dollar was worth a good 15 cents more than the canadian. But i digress...
if you need any help on your quest Gem, just let me know. I'll gladly lend a hand where I can.
-
If the deadline was more generous than 2 weeks-- like a month, at least-- I'd try.
But I'd probably do it like a puzzle oriented thing, because battle systems. Gah.
-
the echange rate is usually in flux. Im suprised to here were on par, for the most part.
-
I've been working on a project for forever.
If you want a demo Zuhane I will upload one later tonight.
I just have other things on my life plate.
-
As some people have said already. The problem is not getting the idea for a game, the problem is making everything needed for said game. I've had countless ideas and systems made for games that never got made. Hell I even tried to start backwards with the sprites first and programming afterwards but ended up with useless resources instead...
It takes time, we work slowly one step at a time. Most of the time we lose interest or life gets in the way (damn that life!!!) so in the end only the most dedicated people manage to pull through. Would be nice to actually release something once.
-
I know how you feel. I have some brilliant idea, then when it boils down to it, it's just sitting
and staring at a white screen and adding lines of code and re-testing until it works. Still, the results
are phenomenal when it finally works!
I think I hate over-ambitious games more than anything. You ask if someone has a cool project, and they
just regurgitate Oblivion, Fable and WoW mixed together where there's "loads to do". That's crap. Anyone could
go ahead and say that. It's the originality and concept, atmosphere, characters and fun gameplay that attrac my attention.
I only brag about the stupidly ridiculous amount of customisation in my games because I've actually successfully coded
it. It's not just a concept! :P
-
I hear ya Zuhane. The games that fail are the games that take themselves too serious.
Making everything dark and moody or super realistic just don't cut it in games. You need some comical relief no matter what RPG you're playing. Even if it consists of sexual innuendo or a glutton.
Hell monkey island is a great game but is as serious as a teal ski jumping badger with a wooden leg and hook.
-
Comic relief is important in a lot of things, though I think there are other kinds of relief. Comedy is just the most effective.
-
Well yeah. It was an example. The resident evil games would be rather boring without all those odd and unserious comments about stupid things. 80% of the stuff they say sounds like a bad porn novel but it still hits right into the heart.
-
"Jill!"
"Barry!"
"Jill!"
"Barry, where were you?"
"I'm sorry Jill, those things in the forest scared me away. But I found this mansion."
"I'm so happy Barry"
*hugs*

i'm working on one i have a recent demo if u want it :D

You should make a game topic.
Charas can always use game topics. It probably won't drop from the front page for atleast a few months.
-
Because of this thread I've started an 'idea' for a new game. Damn you zuhane haha. Not I gotta fit this into my schedule as well as getting back into drawing.
Which brings me to ask why is it every time a girl asks me to draw them an animal its a ****ing penguin?
-
I'm glad this is causing the odd creative spark! I agree, Purple. The people who write the dialogue for
Resident Evil probably do the scripts for Brazzers movies. A classic example of a failing game is a new
member called something like (insert colour)/(insert type of warrior)/(insert symbols or the letter x) who creates
a game with 80 playable classes including archer, warrior, berserk warrior, retarded warrior, priest, light priest,
dark priest, tanned Latino priest, catholic priest, etc with 900+ hours of gameplay and over 600 special attacks.
A little ambitious, wouldn't you say? :P
In fact, this has sparked a thread idea!

Сокол is radically changed, to the point where I can no longer recognize it.
Started as: Apocalypse is released by some unknown organization headed by a mysterious man always smoking "Сокол" brand cigs. Unlikely people join together in an effort to stop it. Possible teammates: Average high school kid, beauty pageant winner, emo kid, aging mobster, illegal immigrant doctor, police sergeant, crippled toddler.
Now is: College kid unofficially contributes to police investigations for some off-the-books cash. Gets wrapped up in a plot to open a portal to an alternate dimension. The head of the portal project: the smoking man.
Don't expect a demo anytime soon. I was originally thinking a completed game would be ready a year ago.
