This is a contest. You make a game. You enter, you make a game, it gets judged. You could win some cool prizes.
Make a (free) game using any platform you like.
Here are the catches...
A) the software is in a state of open beta or higher status. (if anyone uses Stencyl, Im cool with that. Public beta will be a go by the time this contest is done with)
B) the game is fully playable, and in one package. Entries that require the judges to download additional software or files to play them will be disqualified
C) the game uses resources that arent stolen, and all credit is given where credit is due. I will be checking up on this, rather heavily, with the other judges.
D) the game must have a distinct ending, or a game over mechanism. Game length should be anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour or so.
E) total dialogue (the amount of story and whatnot that I have to read) should not exceed 1000 words. a fun and solid gameflow is going to earn more favour with judges then some story driven thing. Contrary to what you think, gameplay is way more important then storyline.
F) here is the fun one... no turn based battle mechanics allowed.
Now here are the Prizes.
First place will receive a Bamboo Pen and Touch Tablet, via Mail.
Second Place will receive a Bamboo Touch Pad Tablet.
Runner up gets an iTunes gift card in the flavour of ten dollars.
Contest begins today, January Second 2011. Contest will End on March 21st.
I reserve the right to add more prizes, or change the existing ones. I reserve the right to add rules and edit rules. In the case of less then three entries, all prizes will be forfeit, and held over towards the Next contest of this nature. In such a case, all submitted entires will be considered valide entries for the next contest. Prizes and deliver may be subject to international shipping laws, or stipulations. This is essentially where the fine print regarding the legalities of this will go. Any entrants under the age of 16 must have Parent or Guardians Consent before winning entries will be awarded prized. Any submitted entries become the property of charas project, and the entrant must agree to allow the staff of charas project to post the games, or links to the intellectual property in question. These stipulations are to protect everyone, and we agree never to make a direct profit from the submitted entry. That having been said...the game is still yours. Do what you want to it....but the submitted entry belongs to the site once submitted.
All are welcome to join. Charas-Project Members, and whoever else. Get creative.
Entries will be judged on a variety of criteria. Judges and Criteria TBA.
Lets make some sweet games, bros.
-
Cool beans. The turn based thing is going to be a toughie to avoid. Time to get massively creative.
-
That is exactly what I hoped to hear in response to that one.
-
My fear is that I'll get an idea that will end up coming back to a turn based system. XD
-
Im hoping to see people tackle some puzzle or platformer elements to try and outsmart me
-
What a time for my internet to go out.
Anyways, do you have any more specifics as to how the gameplay should be?
Right now it's very loosely worded.
-
Gameplay is open ended....save for the fact that a turn-based combat system is forbidden.
Loosely worded is my way of leaving things up for creative interpretation.
-
Hmmm. I think I'll try it. Great idea BTW Ben.
-
So it doesn't need to be a RPG then? Time to get creative.
-
It most definatly does not have to be an RPG. It would be cool to see Charas in general branch outwards, in terms of the cool stuff we make
-
Contest begins today, January Second 2011. Contest will End on March 21st.
-
I'll try.
-
neat. finally a game I can make. the DBS has never been nice to me.
-
I got 1 question. Would an in game tutorial count towards the 1000 word limit? Same thing with signs and such or random NPC's.
Or just the story portion part is 1000 words.
-
I got 1 question. Would an in game tutorial count towards the 1000 word limit? Same thing with signs and such or random NPC's.
Or just the story portion part is 1000 words.
It all counts towards a loose word count.
What Im saying....It I dont want to see you focus on something with a bunch of words. Gameplayer over story/character development/in game tutorials. If you have a tutorial exceeding 200 words, youve missed the point. Simple game. Less is more
-
who is this guy? I've been coming to charas off and on fir like 8 years and I never heard of no 'ben' but now he's an admin?
-
gemini got a name change.
I could reverse the question, though. Who are you?
The name reminds me nothing. And judging by your Register date and post count, I suppose you spent most of your time coming without any account and post very infrequently. So, who are you?
And I'd really like to join, wasn't it for the fact that I can't code at all... may try Stencyl, if it's not too complicated.
-
I'm VERY happy with these rules, as my current project will fit these very nicely. I plan on having a very strong entry indeed.
Couple questions at this time:
1) do you have the RPGMaker 2k3 RTP? I'm not all that convinced I'm even *using* the RTP, but all it takes is one file referenced once for the thing not to work, so I'd either have to include it to be safe or know you guys have it.
2) re: stolen vs credited resources - Can we use basically anything as long as we credit it? I'm mainly thinking mp3s here.
3) re: total words - The game is level based, and after beating a level you can reply it (and are encouraged to do so, to get a better score and more unlockables and stuff) ... since each level has some dialog, and you can reply them as many times as you want, technically you'd be able to cross the 1000 word limit through sheer replaying. I feel like this is maybe nitpicky, but I just want to make sure I'm safe and something like this isn't a big deal. No, you know what, I have to believe something like this wouldn't be against the spirit of the rules you've set up. Forget that.
-
1) No, I dont.
2) Give'er.

I've gone through several accounts. I started in maybe 2003. I was here during the heyday of a lot of crazy drama. Long ago, believe it or not, this was actually a community about rpg maker and gathering resources for it. Then things got weird and the site kinda fell a part. I'm actually glad this contest is happening now.
-
The community just became more generalized is all. We've all been trying to pick things up around here and bring sexy back.
But yeah...
That is not what this topic is about. Im going to be a topic nazi in this contest thread.
-
Does the game still have to have some sort of combat?
-
I think as long as it satisfies the general rules you're okay. Or at least that's what I've gathered from his original post.
-
Does the game still have to have some sort of combat?
No.
-
It can be as hard as you like. If its impossible or near impossible or generally too-hard, youll lose points, obviously.
-

Happens. And hey, I remember you. You were trying to get writers to write your sci-fi books. And your old account got banned for... eh... some reason. Too lazy to check the log for it. But you were still claiming to be someone back THEN too, so if nothing else you're consistent.
-
Would you encourage us to actually make an effort with the storyline or should this be completely based on gameplay and only text out the vital parts?
-
Jeez.
Make a storyline. Plot is cool. But I dont want to spend half of the game reading about the lives of your characters and the history of a fake land I dont give a crap about. Feel free to throw in easter eggs, with some story. The word count thing is a guideline for a standard playthrough of the game. Ill work on a revised version of the rule to avoid confusion.
Im not going to stand in front of NPCs or search menus, and count words. Im trying to avoid getting sucked into some story driven tripe. The game should be Flow over Fable, if you get my drift. Substance over story. Make a game that isnt boring and wordy.

sounds like somebody had a bad experience with a JRPG
-
Okay, i like.
So. basically. If I give credit I am cool. Alright. Credits. Cool.
-
sounds like somebody had a bad experience with a JRPG
I think its just to avoid having games entered that are just a massive book made into a game that takes 72 hours to play through just because of dialogue. They still have to judge them all you know...
-
It sounds real simple guyz. This is a content about game play. Story is cool and can make it more interesting, but you won't get any extra points for writing a drama that can compete with Broadway. Make some goddamn games!
And, I know I said I would like to contribute, but I'm really in no position financially to do so. I'm about to get slammed with student loans and other fees for being a bad student. So yeah, sorry Ben. =\
-
No worries bro. If I had expected donations, I wouldnt have been able to host it anyhow.
THE BOTTOM LINE. MAKE SOME GAMES
-
GAMES IS BEING MADE.
We're doing this man. We're making this happen.
-
I'm working on something. I just wish I knew how to make something great when it comes to AI. Helpless monsters running straight for the hero or shooting him from afar.
-
Is there any good and simple program/engine/whatever out there to make a game? I'm not good at coding, at all, which is why I don't use Game Maker, and I suck at using RPG Maker to do something else than an RPG... but I'd like to participate.
-
Well, there are ABS tutorials out there.
Also, you can find examples / engines / tutorials for gamemaker simply by searching for what you are looking for.
-
Can we like, post the game when it's done? Say i finish it in a month, can i post it here on charas?
-
I haven't been following Stencyl lately, has that been released to public beta yet?
-
i should be released sometime this month.
-
I thought that I'd just randomly offer my help to anyone who needs it for this contest.
If you need anyone to brainstorm with, get some advice, figure out how to make something work or fix some problem. Maybe even spriting (although I can't promise that).
I have a chunk of experience with RM2k3 and an average knowledge of gamemaker. You could also get spriting advice or help fixing things, but keep in mind that I have little to no knowledge of any spriting tools beside MS paint.
So if you need help, let me know. PM or through msn.
-
DanG! this is exciting! I had 2 really great ideas which "No turn based combat" just took a big dump allllll over it.
Ill have to adjust i guess!
I am definately going to try and get something together for this... although that no combat thing is really stumping me lolz, i like my combats :P
-
I am entering this thing NOW!!!!!
-
I am entering this thing NOW!!!!!
Don't worry, you have 2 months left to make it.
-
If there is not a rule about it, dont worry about it.
What would make you think that this would be some top secret villainous rule I have hidden?
Make a game. No turn based. Dont use things that are Illegal to use.
Think less, stupid. Make a game
-
'm working on mine! ...this battle system is a pain in the @$$ to code.
-
My lack of art skills is aggravating me.
Anyone wish to team up for awesome?
-
I'm really getting my brains going trying to think of a concept for this incredibly complicated new game!!
Could I borrow the tablet to draw game art, then return it as a possible prize? :P
-
just for the record, Im far less concerned about graphics then I am the playability of the game
-
I personally don't want to do another Kyoobism game because, well, it appears that that's all I can do.
If I have to though, I guess I will.
-
GReen Light go! I have started creating my game! 20 or so days late, but im confident.
Ill be making most of my own sprites, but borrowing/editing most of my chipsets.
-
Laugh all you want, but I'm contemplating making a first-person game in RPG Maker 2003!
-
Stencyl is fun to play around with, but I'm not sure how playable my game will be.
If I don't finish in time for contest I will def. post a bit about the game at a later date. (first gotta get my computer to accept my new tablet, a girl I'm talking to just bought me the bamboo pen and touch, so awesome)
-
I made my main character in like three seconds. But I loves it. Its such a cute tiny... alien... eyeball... thingy.
-
Laugh all you want, but I'm contemplating making a first-person game in RPG Maker 2003!
Played with the idea a long time ago, figured it would involve LOTS of images. Deemed it impractical.
-
I'm gonna go ahead and laugh.
-
Laugh all you want, but I'm contemplating making a first-person game in RPG Maker 2003!
thinking out of the box will get you everywhere
-
it's becoming clearer and clearer that i will have to make my chipsets /grumble-grumble
-
I officially love vectors.
They're making designing the game look soooo easier.
ed: Does "Die and the game's done" count as a solid game over mechanism?
I'm planning on an open world type dealy.
-
Hmm, I'm coming in about a month late here, but I've been working on making my main game more puzzle oriented. Perhaps I will do some sort of puzzle/collecting type game.
-
Oh, wow, this is harder than I thought.
ed: Getting good progress with my game, though.
I mean, I can move around...doesn't mean I have any game logic, though.
-
I'm making progress.
-
I really, really, really want to share everything that I'm doing right now, because I personally think it's one of the coolest things I've done.
Unfortunately, I can't, because, you know...contest.
-
I'm making an RPG game with 100 playable classes, over 200 quests and complete freedom, a day and night system,
Direct X11 tessellation, and 600+ hours of gameplay. It's still in the concept stage, but once I get a team to do everything
else, it'll be amazing!
-
**** it.

Controls:
Z - Toggle Missiles
A - Toggle Missile Pods
X - Toggle Afterburner
C - Cycle auxiliary upgrades
CTRL - Play auxiliary animation.
Shift - Use afterburner
Space - Toggle waypoints

I can whip out something
-
:eyes:
-
HECK YES.
Update...Ill be buying the second tablet prize a week from yesterday, when I get a chance to run arounds and do my banking and crap. Expect pics.
I may give a breif extension to the deadline if its looking like its needed. But keep in mind the extension will be breif.
Ive been stuck at work virtually most of the time, and for this I apologize. But screw that. Prizes and games are two of the best things out there.
-
No, if one person enters, theyll get the grand prize, and Ill resign from charas for eternity. Because if I cant stimulate some game making with cash from my own pocket, then its never going to happen.
-
At this rate, I'm not going to be done in time.
Ceres is having some huge framerate issues...I haven't even programmed anything else in, and it's running at 2/3 speed.
Until I get that fixed, I can't really work on anything else.
I'll see if I can't churn out something else, though.
-
My game is also taking longer. I have schoolwork and stuff.
-
There's no way an extension should be required. Like 3 months is plenty of time to make a game between 25 minutes and an hour long. Mine was like 80% done within the first few days.
-
I started working on some stuff, but this is getting hard with how much work I have this semester. I'm going to try though.
-
My main problem is squashing bugs and trying to figure out the new tech that I'm using.
I may have to simplify my space game, though.
-
Does your game have custom graphics and did you code everything yourself?
no i donwladed a gmae and put my name on it lol
But seriously, if time is an issue, then I'd say you are going well above and beyond the scope of the contest here. Getting extensions is kind of cheating the system since then more time would be available to make bigger projects when everyone else was expecting less time for smaller projects. It's like... um... if we were running a 10-lap race, and everyone paced themselves for 10 laps, and on the final lap it was announced that it was actually a 20-lap race. People weren't pacing themselves for a 20-lap race - they're probably dead tired, having given their all for running a really good 10-lap race. Someone would win the race, but it would probably be a different someone. The race would have changed.
If you do more work than me for your game, and it makes your game better than mine, you should win. But you shouldn't use the fact that you have to do more work as an excuse to get more time. If anything, not having enough time is a failure to understand what would be required for the contest.
Honestly, I don't think I'll win. I probably won't place. But I'll have something to enter that I didn't just give up on because it got too big, complicated, and boring. And for me, and probably a lot of us, that counts as a decent achievement around here.
-
I have to agree with Sai here.
We are not supposed to make a 12 hour game. If you have something that you're working on - you can also throw together a lame ending if time is the additional Pylon you must construct.
Lame joke aside, I'm still working on AIs, bastards don't want to work as I intend them to.
-
I have to restart from scratch because of framerate issues.
Yay.
Oh well, now I can make the entire game Kyoobist.
-
I could make a game if I had known about this IN January. I just now found out about this.
-
You have a whole month to do a short game. Sounds reasonable to me.
-
quit being a bunch of losers and just make a friggin game. Use public domain resources if you want.
Its quite simple.
Make a game. Make it short. Make it playable and fun. Make it follow the basic principles of a game. Make it not have a turn based combat system.
Prove to me you can make a game from start to finish. I dont care about your stories...unless you have a degree in liturature, chances are your stories suck. I dont care about classes or DPS or magic defense...chances are you dont know alogrithyms well enough to balance those things out.
I do know you have all played a game before that was short and liked it. Do that.
No extensions. Late entries (24 hours late and under) will be accepted, but will lose points.
-
You have a whole month to do a short game. Sounds reasonable to me.
A month, with school, babysitting, job hunting.
D:
I'll try though.
I though I had like 2 weeks.
-
I know you can do it, you've done an non-turn based game before. So give it a go, put something together and then throw in graphics the last week.
-
Time to get crackin'
-
But those games usually had either awesome gameplay mechanics or awesome graphics. I'm trying to create some interesting graphics, but I have no idea how all the animations I'm doing are supposed to be coded into a game. >_>
If you cant muster enough testicles to enter, then don't enter. There are no prizes for excuses.
-
Mine's pretty sick. 100% everything has been drawn by me. The battle system is really cool. It's
like a dancing card fighting game thing all intertwined into one with voice acting and a storyline
involving Kim Jong-Il! :D
-
I just realized Spring Break starts for me this weekend. Looks like I'm going to able to enter this for sure. I tried Stencyl, but I don't think I've got enough of a grasp on it to use it yet.
-
Mine's pretty sick. 100% everything has been drawn by me. The battle system is really cool. It's
like a dancing card fighting game thing all intertwined into one with voice acting and a storyline

I am disgusted, but at the same time intrigued...
-
I have a strange question. I've basically been working my face off on Quasigen Island at the moment
making the first dungeon. Since the battle system involves real-time elements and is 100% customly
built, would it be possible to use this dungeon with a few battles in the contest. The events are sequenced
meaning no random encounters, and the battles are quick and sharp! I'll even have it so you don't level up,
but more or less get the game showcased a little bit. Would that be alright?
-
I feel so terrible about this.
3 goddamn games I tried to make.
All of them failed in one manner or another.
>:{
-
I'm tryin'. Unfortunately, my break was less than productive. Here is to bringing my laptop to classes to work on it!
-
My project is going forward, made a reasonable acceptable AI at last. Now for the puzzle parts.
I will pull this off, I know I will.
-
I am disgusted, but at the same time intrigued...
As am I. Sounds juicy.
-
Fricka fricka frack, frickin'... FRICK!
-
oh crap
-
So I'm working on getting this to work. So far have about 10 minutes of playtime. Gonna make the effort to make the remaining 20 and finish this.
Godspeed to everyone else.
-
Eeeeep! Been working like a motherflipper on this game! Driving me nuts!
-
At this point it's become painfully obvious I'm not going to make it. :( Code got out of control on me.
-
He said keep it simple, guys. Jeez.
You're all hopeless. :P
-
I totally did.
Well, kind of.
Alright, I totally overestimated myself.
-
Ya my game became something else, then i added a turn based combat and disqualified myself.
Although this game will be making an appearance in the games section in the near future.
My First game was basically a 2 player Rock-paper-scissors with no animations yet.
-
I couldn't keep it simple with the whole no default battle engine requirement. And honestly all this game maker talk was intimidating.
Oh well.
-
Stencyl is easy, and you were all offered a beta version that's 99% bug free.
-
Exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about.
RIP RPG Maker, I guess
-
Exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about.
RIP RPG Maker, I guess
Well, at least when we're not supposed to create turn based stuff. Handling enemy hp and stuff and collisions is possibly one of RPGM's weakest sides. While it can be made easily with gamemaker.
-
Oh dear! Since the deadline's the 21st, does that mean I can hand it in tomorrow and not today, right?
-
Hm, I just finished a final project for my game design class that's pretty much just a playable tech demo, but actually would meet all of those criteria except for the 25 minutes to an hour part. Then again, I would also think submitting it would sort of be cheating and it was a group project anyway, so I wouldn't try to submit it.
Good luck to everyone with this, though. I'm curious to see how it turns out.
-
Geez! Geez! Geez! Geez! Geez! Geez! I'm working on this game like a caffeine-addicted chimpanzee with
ADHD! It'll be in before 11.59pm tonight! :D
-
It's finally done! Right before the deadline ends, too. I seriously hope I can win this tablet.
I've been up until 3/4am every night working on it frantically. I've missed lectures and a night
out, but it's finally done. Hope it's alright.
It's a comedy/action game set in the world of Quasigen Island. It's pretty short and crappy, but
it's the best I could do after the spriting and coding with such little time!
http://www.mediafire.com/?85217g0b03bzp7b
-
Yay! I'm so excited to give this a try! :D
I've downloaded it, but I think I'll wait until tomorrow to give it a go. Looking at the computer screen is about to give me a migraine.
-
Well, here is mine. Still kinda pissed that the boss battle bugged as much as it did.
Enjoy either way, may the best game win.

ps: it's a gamemaker exe.
-
Deadlined
Okay dudes, you gotta be patient with me at this point though. Im stuck in mad busy mode right now. Ill update the thread with entries the day after tomorrow. Judging begins right after thursday, as I have meetings with goons this week.
-
Thanks! I'm proud of myself for actually completing something!
-
Honestly, Zuhane, I'm not trying to bash you, but does your game even technically qualify? I didn't think it was going to be a rehash of Quasigen Island. Asides from that, it's got a turn based battle system. =\
-
Well, it kind of has a turn-based system if you want to consider each attacking attempt to be a turn. At the same time, it's very different from traditional turn-based systems in that there's not a separate turn for the hero and the enemy...you either succeed in your attack or you lose one of your precious 3hp. So yeah, I guess that one is up to the judge of the contest. It kind of is turn-based, but at the same time it doesn't use standard RPG mechanics like experience/levels, items, or a magic/skill system and combat is more reliant on your timing skills.
Anyway, I've played through both of the games now. Enjoyed them both immensely, though Purple's game glitched on me a bit. (Would either of you guys mind if I did a LP-style review on your games for the serious game reviews thing? :D)
-
Believe it or not, the pictures in my sig which are included in the entry are actually for the game. I
just threw them in my sig to build hype, since they look rather nice. I still spent a stupid amount of
time almost making a brand new chipset, map-making and creating a battle system from scratch.
All pictures and music in this game are brand new and not from Quasigen Island. To be honest, the resemblance
it bears is the fact I copied the folder over and worked from there. All maps, menus, systems and
common events were completely deleted! I just hate removing Alex from my party, changing menu sounds
and getting the **** scared out of me with overly loud RTP midis when I forget to turn the volume down and
press "Test Game" :P
And Natako, I'd be flattered if you reviewed my game. It's not exactly what I wanted it to be, but a deadline's
a deadline, right? We had a lot of fun doing the autocue voice sections XD
-
=\ well I guess you're right it's not really turn based. considering there is no turns.
Is this really all the entries?
-
It's a shame, because I wanted to do something more. Guess it's more a showcase of
graphics and coding! And yeah, people are certainly less motivated to post games than
I remember.
-
Why don't you losers who didn't finish your games... well, finish your games and post them anyway.
*colored in pink to express extreme loserliness.
-
If you other guys can finish your games in the next day or two, Ill take some late entries at a minimal dock to your overall score
-
Annnnd nobody ****ing replied.
-
Yes, we're so awesome...
It's quite a shame really... but who am I to speak, I haven't done anything either.
I really should've tried, at least...
-
My main problem is aiming too high, even though it's completely not necessary. Oh and random PC crashes, yeah...
Though you know... it's not completely too late. I mean, sure, we're out of the contest, but... meh, actually, if we didn't bother when there was a prize to win, there's no way it's going to work with none. We really are a bunch of horrible people...
Ben has got me a Stencyl Beta, I really should try something with this. But then again, Real Life is about to start being an inconvenience, now.
All in all, I suck.
-
If you guys wanted do it, you would've done it. Its not about the prizes, or the time frame, or even other distractions in your lives.
Now, I didn't even enter, so maybe I shouldn't be talking, but no one even bothered responding to Ben's last post. Ben tried to do something nice to invigorate some creativity and no one cared.
Pretty much all there is to it.
-
Thinking of it now, with the amount of effort that went in, I could have just worked at a job
for real money and bought a slightly less fancy drawing pad with that money. Tee hee!
I think sometimes people can get overloaded with creativity and just crash and burn. I was
originally going to make a stealth game which I made all the graphics for, then a math-based
fighting game, and even a first-person RPG dungeon crawler. Settled for this in the end due to
Uni deadlines and stress, etc!
-
Ummm... are there any updates on this? People keep asking me about my submission.
-
I'm assuming Ben quit.
Because nobody joined it.
-
I remember Ben saying that he had this gallery thing going on.
So I suppose he put his focus on what is important. And well, while he is gone doing that - we could all finish our games to make this a more interesting contest right?
-
Wow, I was kind of a dick earlier on. But uhhhh, yeah, you guys should try and finish yo games if you still feeling it.
