Title: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: ThexXtremeXx on January 12, 2011, 02:08:31 AM
I've heard tons about it, so I finally decided to buy it.

Can someone explain it a bit to me? I don't want anything spoiled too much for me so, please?

So waste of money or... ?

I like it.

What do you need explained? How to start up? How to play it? For general information, you should see the Minepedia. (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page) Though, that does include all sorts of information about the game you probably don't want to know. There's also a Beginner's guide to Survival (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Beginner%27s_guide) there.

Alright, I guess I'll just fool around with it until I figure it all out. Thanks for the help though.

I use it to relax.
Seriously, it's very calming to just sit there and mine for iron/rock for an hour or two.

ed: BTW, the game is really just doing whatever you want.
If you want to, you can just sit there and kill skeletons all day (which I personally don't recommend...the combat isn't that good).
Lucas just doesn't get sandbox games (http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r125/fruckert/mspa_face-1.png)

It's renowned for it's brilliant storyline and level design. No seriously though, I basically screwed up some
exams at Uni because I played this game so much. SO ADDICTIVE!

Minecraft is a diamond in the rough. On the plus side, it's pure sandbox and building a mighty castle and shooting at skeletons from its walls is wonderful. On the downside, it's in desperate need of some code optimisation and Notch Time (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Notch_Time) is even less reliable than Valve Time.

Lucas just doesn't get games

God. Seriously, Lucas? Complaining about the graphics?
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?

Is it just me or does Minecraft seem to use some of RPG Maker's Chipsets?
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?

Lucas is being self righteous...the graphics are not why you buy this game.
But then again, this game is big time hyped, and not all that great.
Also: my impression of this topic

You are confusing "Old School" and minimalist.
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: Archem on January 12, 2011, 07:25:03 PM
Yes. Old school would be like a modern Nintendo including a throwback level, where you play as an 8-bit version of your character or where you play in a classically-inspired level.

Example:

Minimalist is more along the lines of the KISS ideology ("Keep it Simple, Stupid", or a variation of that), but applied to the visuals.

Example:

In this case, making all things squared and all textures visible at the per-pixel level accomplishes the charming minimalist style.

Show me your random noise filtering. I want to see it.

Lucas: Complain about stupid things
Draggy: Actually valid complaint about game
Lucas: Say valid complaint isn't so bad compared to X

What the hell are you doing even
Also your noise filter complaint is pretty bogus
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: Ben on January 13, 2011, 02:42:56 AM
Lucas, Your "random noise filters" do not exist.

There are no random noise filter, unless you can provide some vidence

See his avatar? That's what he thinks minecraft looks like.
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: HobomasterXXX on January 13, 2011, 04:10:39 AM
Anyway, even if there are random noise filters (ther aren't), you can just download a texture pack and chuck it into the texture pack folder and hey presto, no more (nonexistant) noise filters. Or make one yourself, even, it's basically the same as making a tileset for RPG maker or something. Hell, if I can do it, anyone can.

Also yeah minecraft is pretty fun if you have a bit of imagination and enjoy this sort of thing. Mods make it even better

I get it now....

the low res textures.... you think they are random noise filters. Thats cute.

Oh boy, time to add a mark to the tally chart of perfectly reasonable discussions which Archem then turned into discussions about himself!

Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: Bluhman on January 14, 2011, 01:14:52 AM
It's confusing, weird and not as good as everyone tells you. That's the truth. :P

I'm sad its beating Limbo on gamefaq's best indie game thing.

I looked up limbo.
Looks generic.
Seriously. I'm looking at the gameplay. Every other indie game is like this.
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: Razor on January 14, 2011, 01:20:09 AM
If you compare what you can get out of Limbo to what you can get out of Minecraft, how is there even a contest?

Also, wasn't it Lucas who turned the topic onto Archem?
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?
Post by: fruckert on January 14, 2011, 01:30:32 AM
Limbo has it's pure atmosphere going for it.
That's...about it.
It's still a big plus, but...
Minecraft has it's unique look, atmosphere (if you think about it), gameplay, minimalistic design, and HUGE replay value going for it.
Much more pros than Limbo has.

But I actually enjoyed playing Limbo...

Limbo looks like every indie game ever, and seems like it's probably pretentious as all hell. Not to say it's bad, however, I can't really say that without playing it.

Minecraft is fun, but an aqquired taste.

Archem is pretty cool.

I've answered everything now, right?

Yeah, that's the problem with mods. Haven't dared touch Minecraft since the patch came out; fear that it'll unmod everything and send it to hell 'n ****.
Title: Re: Minecraft, anybody?

I really only use MM mods.
I'm kind of a purist when it comes to game mods.

mods encourage lazy game developers to keep on being lazy.

...Elder Scrolls? Didn't you have hundreds of mods on every game?
No, you did.
At the most, I had about 20.
Plus, the biggest thing that I had on was Elsewyr, which was practically a user made expansion pack.
That and Craftybits, which was just awesome.

Notch had already proven he's a terrible coder and is lazy as hell before mods even existed for Minecraft. I'm not too bothered.

At least the update included a mod that makes the game render faster

Pretty much everything he added this update was adapted from mods. Except squids I guess. Squids suck though, they spawn ****ing EVERYWHERE there's water

Well hey, something that should be in the game anyway!

I think my problem is that I love the concept of Minecraft, but I'm disappointed that it had to be executed by a fat Swede with punctuality issues.
