Title: College
Post by: forgetaboutit on February 28, 2011, 11:57:49 PM
So, most of us are in college right now. What are you studying? And for the ones who left, what did you study? I don't think anyone here still hasn't started, but just in case, what do you plan on studying?

I recently (like, this morning :P) became an art student at the Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul, which as you can see from the really big name is probably a really good school. College seems nice so far. And in four years I'll be allowed to teach art, which's quite a nice thing. Though I'd rather just do other stuff. But I still have a lot of time to think about that.

don't **** up! Even when **** gets tough, it's better to just do the work even if your professor sucks, or you don't like the class, or the other students are extremely gay. Just some friendly, obvious, advice.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I dropped out of college last semester. Or rather, I flunked out. And I pretty much hate my life right now.

Regardless, I still somehow have a 4.0 GPA.

I'm a music education major with my primary instrument Oboe.  I am still debating whether to have a piano or voice minor.  But I'm for sure going to start composition lessons junior year.  I had a 3.6 last semester without even really trying.  Certainly not going to get that this semester. -_-  But I have to keep a 3.0 to stay a music ed major so...

I think Fortet is a music major as well on Saxophone somewhere.

But congrats Lucas!

I didn't even finish High School... damn lack of motivation.
I'd have the brain to go further, but I don't have the morale for it. I think I need something awesomely great to happen to give me a boost.
Though what, I have no idea...

If I ever manage to go on, I may try anything related to Science, though I don't know what exactly. Or maybe Politics... you know, anything complicated or long so I just end up giving up and returning to my fail-at-lifeness.

Since it all is free over here - most people study all these higher educations.
Me, I might just end up a teacher as I intend to be. Gotta say that free or not; this demands a lot of your head. I kinda like my free time too much to read boring literature.

And you know what? Since I didn't finish high school and am older than 18, I can just enter some government program that will pay me to go to school. Unfortunately, being paid to go to school isn't as motivating as I expected. However, I may just do that again, since I do want my diploma.
No diploma = barely a chance of finding a decent job, and of course, no chance of going to college or such.

I'm planning on going back to school Sept 2012 for History and Music majors/English Minor, with the intention of being a teacher.

I'm kinda nervous about the music part. I'm an exceptional bassist and great singer, but only an average guitarist, and I don't really play any other instruments any more (used to play Alto Sax and Piano, but lost interest when I started playing bass) Not sure if I NEED to be a super good player to get into Uni with the intent of teaching though.

Unfortunately, being paid to go to school isn't as motivating as I expected.

Paying to go to college isn't really motivating either. It's just more stress on top of the stress of learning and challenging yourself. Personally, I feel very conflicted about what I choose to learn. I want to study a lot, but the more I study, the more it costs, so I'll probably end up only studying the classes I need (if I go back to school). Which is sad cuz people should be able to study different subjects if they want to, regardless how it applies to their major.

The bottom line is, you go to college 'cuz you want to. If you don't want to put your head in it and study, you're not going to. Lots of people fool themselves into thinking they'll study though.

Can you audition on bass?  If you play string bass I understand, but I don't know about electric.

Here, you can't really get a decent job with at least your sec.5 diploma (last year before College and such), which is why I kinda force myself doing it a bit. Also, being in College, University or whatever is a bit more motivating, because you are at a higher level. It means you did achieve something and are still trying to. Me, well, I'm still without my sec.5, which most people get at 16-17 while I am 21... that's the thing. But I do understand your point, though.

I'm currently in my third of five years going for a BS in Software Engineering. It consumes my life. This quarter just ended last week. The best part about the program, though, is the fact that for six months of the middle three years, you find a full-time job (usually paid, especially in my major, and if it's unpaid it's not full-time) with or without the help of the University's system (known as a co-op job). I had my first one last spring/summer and am beginning my second one in a week. The first and last years are nine months of school as opposed to the middle three being six months, which is why the degree is five years. I'm also trying to fit in a music theory/composition minor.

Overall, some classes are pure hell and others aren't so much, but when I'm done I'll have 18 months of SE-related work on my resume and will likely have a job lined up before graduating. I'm still not entirely sure what I want to be doing, though. I think I would ideally like to work part-time for a game studio and part-time as adjunct faculty at my school. I think getting a master's degree will depend on how much I need it, but right now it seems likely.

I took a game design course this past quarter that used Unity as the development platform. I don't even like thinking about how many hours I dumped into working with Unity, collaborating with the digital media friends in my group...

It pretty much is.

But I think community college is good for a lot of people, because you can get your slacking out of the way with little repercussion. When you're ready to go to a real college, you'll have gotten all that out of you and be ready to kick ***.

I don't mean to knock community colleges. There are a lot of opportunities there. It's cheap, teachers are generally chillin', work is relaxed, there's transfer opportunities, the kids suck but whatever. For me, it just didn't feel any different from high school, so I did the same thing I did in high school when I went to college. I slacked off. A lot. Then I got academically suspended and the bills start coming in and I realized, "Well, I guess I really AIN'T a little kid no mo'."

So yeah. I would really like to go back in the fall, but I'm barely a sophomore with my credentials and I'll be 21 next month. Most people graduate from college when they're 21. I know it's not that big of a deal, but it still kinda sucks. I'm not sure if I'm gonna go back to school or do something completely irresponsible and take off for a year.
Title: Re: College
Post by: SaiKar on March 28, 2011, 08:39:11 PM
Most graduate when they're 22. 18 > graduate high school > 4-year degree > 22 and graduate college. I graduated considerably later. I changed my major a bit late in and not enough transfered for me to make good on time.

As long as you can afford it, don't be in a rush to get out of schooling. There's lots of long years to work no matter when you get your diploma, be it at 22 or 32.

I know the feeling, Dren. I have a feeling that I'm not going back next year, seeing that I'm in such a financial rut. It doesn't help that the governor of PA is a moron who decided to cut funding for higher education by over 50%, essentially meaning that all the universities in the state are looking towards tuition increases of around 30%. Seeing that I'm at Penn State and paying out-of-state tuition, which is thousands of dollars higher than in-state tuition, things aren't looking good for my schooling situation if I remain in PA. I'll probably look into taking online classes elsewhere or even transferring to another state entirely. It's total BS.

Well, you probably need to pay the trip and for a place to stay. Then it would be good if you know the language. Also, your previous education better be considered as one the precondition to enter.
Then you're all good.

Strangely enough, I've also considered that possibility. If whichever country I moved to happened to require me to be fluent in another language, I'm sure that I could do it. Foreign languages happen to be one of my greatest strengths. Even after 3-4 years of not speaking it, I still understand French fluently. Speaking it is a bit of a different story. It would probably be kind of broken, but understandable. While I'm well aware that the grass is always greener on the other side, so to speak, I'd really like to get out of the US. :|

A friend of mine wants someone to backpack Europe with them, and I'm very much considering it. But, it'll be much more than that. We'd be going with five grand a piece, or so, and would need to stay in cheap hostels or even find work on the side. I don't know. I need to look more into it. I've heard of a lot of people making similar trips. We'd be there for almost a year. It's basically sacrificing a lot of commodities in order to see and experience many different cultures.

The point is, if I did go, I'm not sure I'd want to come back to the US.

I just wanted to point out that I'm 21 and still haven't graduated from High School, which most people do at 17-18. But that isn't the biggest thing.
The thing is that I could have done it at 16. I had excellent grades and usually did not need to study at all. But then, a whole lot of nothingness happened, my motivation went downhill and here I am, now.

Now, I know looking back is never a good thing, but it's pretty hard not. After all, the present is all due to the past. So yeah, it's not only that I'm older and still haven't graduated, it's that I could have done it earlier and failed.

However, I do plan on returning, I'm just a bit unsure about when. I could try out now, I'd even be paid for it, but I have a feeling I wouldn't do much right now.

I really need some kind of pills that turn you into an optimistic person.

I guess I'll probably go into music education as an undergraduate and later get a Master's in music composition.  Apparently there's no bachelor's for composition, the douchers.  Anyway, that entails a lot of other BS because college-level music programs are about as exclusive and cut-throat as the Blue Angels' Contry Club.  So, that means a lot of practicing that I should have been doing over the last few years in the next few months.

So, that means a lot of practicing that I should have been doing over the last few years in the next few months.

...The college I go to has a B.A in Music Theory and Composition.

It really depends on the program on how hard it is to get into.  The higher quality, the more difficult.  Plus, different instruments have different rates of acceptance.  Double reeds are not very competitive at most schools, whereas Trumpet/Flute/Voice are very competitive.

Every time I read B.A., I don't read "Bachelor of Arts" I read "Bad ***"

Haha, that was the joke in high school.

I'm not sure if it's a BA or a BFA.  Hmm oh well.

I only play guitar and a little piano, and have been learning how to sing over the last year.  The schools I've been looking at apparently don't have a B.A. for composition.  So... yeah.  We'll see how it goes.  I was planning on declaring guitar as my main instrument since that's what I've been playing the longest, but there aren't many places for guitar, classically.  The guitar wasn't really popular until after the 1930s, so not many composers ever incorporated one into their works.  If there's a jazz ensemble or something more contemporary, I might try for those as well.

Ah.  See, even if you find a school that does a composition program, they usually make you audition on an instrument anyway.  Well, there is literature out there.  One of my favorite pieces is for guitar actually.  If you can sing decently, you could try doing voice.  But that usually means you need to know a piece in Italian and English.  Good luck.  I've seen some really good guitar players at recitals went I was looking at Edinboro University.

Well, I had four projects to do in five weeks. Four of those weeks are now up. My intention had been to get all four projects done in these four weeks do I could spend my last week chilling and not having to rush around getting work done. Three projects are done. The fourth requires me to obtain resources which I can't get until I get back onto campus next week. Thus, despite my efforts, my last week is still going to be a Stress Festival.

Also oh my GOD DragonBlaze is here.

Yesterday, I had the "listening" portion of my Spanish final exam. I desperately need to make an "A" on it to maintain my GPA.

They play a series of audio clips, and you have to answer some questions on them. They play each one twice. After they played one of them, I was confident I knew the answers to all but one question. Then, they played it again, and right at the critical part SOMEONE COUGHED LOUDLY.

I told the professor, but she refused to play it again. FML!

I think I did okay except I got a 63% in my online health class.  I kinda kept forgetting to do the modules.  But I got a 26/30 on the final.

Stressing out a bit.

Finals are next week. I admittedly slacked off a lot at the start of the quarter, and now it's coming back to kick my ***.
I'm barely holding a 3.1 right now. I need a miracle to pass Piano II with a C, as well as Political Science.
Theory/Aural Skills? Not worried. I'm good at that.
Jury? Help! But juries are always stressful.

If I drop below a 3.0 at the end of the year, I lose $800/year in extra scholarship money. Not good. At all.

Organic Chemistry exam
Nuclear-magnetic resonance exam
Statistics exam
5-hour Vitamin C titration practical

All in the space of a single week. Lucky me, right?

I haven't consumed alcohol for 8 days!!!!!!!!! :'(

So I actually made an RM2K3 game for a Spanish group project. The game was short, about 10 minutes long, but since I was the only person who knew how to use RM2K3, I obviously ended up doing almost everything. I delegated some script-writing duties to my two group members (Even though, thanks to their slow-*** e-mail responses, I was left writing about half the script) and spent hours upon hours planning, programming, testing, finding and editing graphics, making maps, finding sound effects and music and converting it to the proper MP3 format, etc. etc. I even met with a native Spanish speaker for an hour to double-check the dialogue for grammar issues. I was fine doing all this, because I knew our project would be impressive and would no doubt get us a good grade. Even still, everyone here knows that RM2K3 is a massive time sink and even the simplest things can take hours to implement.

88.

I've never been so pissed to get a B+ in all my life.
