Title: 2 New portable Square games out now
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 30, 2011, 09:19:14 PM
Dissidia 2
3rd birthday

So yeah. We had this thread sometime back regarding Dissdia 2. And apparently it is already out... Didn't see that one comming.
Anyway, interested in getting this game since I liked the last one but will probably stall it a bit more. Kinda busy at the moment either way. New characters, new items, new outfits, new modes and what looks like a world map. Or is it just another sequel?

And then we have The 3rd Birthday (parasite eve 3). They recently released Parasite eve 1 on the PS store and Parasite eve 2 should be up there soon.
This is another game that interests me, probably because I was so friggin hooked by Parasite eve 2. One of the scariest games I played as a child as well as challenging and great. Resident evil with fireballs and aiming.

So, anyone emptying their purses for this or having strange greed-dreams about it? I know I will soon enough.

And if you got any of them - are they worth my hype?

Oh I thought it was just a Parasite Eve game remake for PSN, but now that I think about it, there was no Parasite Eve 3 until now. I might check this out, I'd really like a new horror game for PSP, but I'm afraid the RPG part might screw it all.

I think Parasite eve 1 had more RPG features than the sequel. In PE2 you had your spells and you earned your points. But it still felt like a survival horror, I know I fought for my survival at least. Those godamn dogs in the desert pushing me down the cliffs.

Also, I was terribly amazed by the FMVs in the games, scared the crap out of me as a kid and all that.
When the rat mutates in PE1 and when the woman mutates in PE2. Great moment but so creepy.

Dissidia 2 is more of the same as Dissidia 1, only now it has Tifa in all her busty glory. Oh, and also some other people nobody cares about.

Haven't checked PE, but haven't heard much good stuff about it. Mostly it were people screaming "They changed it now it sucks!"

Always like this. Make a similar game, people will call it boring. Bring some changes, people will complain.

Well, people always complain when a new pokémon generation is released, then they slowly accept the new pokés and attacks.
When gen3 was released people complained that you couldn't visit kanto and jotho anymore. Also that the pokés looked like crap and no team rocket.
Then came gen 4 with another continent and new pokes and people complained that they looked like crap and the new moves put old pokés to shame.
Then came gen 5 with new continent and no olde' pokes, people are still complaining.

Diablo to diablo 2 was a big leap though. And by the look of things - the leap to diablo 3 will be another great leap. But for some reason blizzard seems to know what they are doing.

Parasite eve to parasite eve 2 removed the ATB bar, and the battle boundaries. Instead you can shoot and cast spells when you need it and enemies are rather relentless. Still have the battle spoils and all that but in a much more action-y way.

But changes like Resident evil 3 and earlier to 4 and 5 kinda ruins the series. Don't get em wrong , both 4 and 5 are great games. But sometimes I wish I had Resident evil 0 with a little better graphics and controls. Great games but not really true to the series.

I can most understand the dislike for losing two whole regions that Pokémon brought with Gen III. Until then, it was just building (even if it was only two games). Also, Team Rocket was cool, so seeing them go is kind of lame, even if it's become the norm. I still want to see their return, and more than anything, I want to have all regions open for exploration. Can you imagine? With Gen V for the first time, I actually think some new Pokémon are stupid. Just some, not all. I love the rest of it, though.

I liked RE the way it was, but I don't mind the shift that 4 took. 5 kind of killed things with its linearity, though. They should drop that ****.

Well, the biggest change was that they took the normally open world, and made it a series of levels, similar to a traditional action game. It wasn't a good move. It became very hard to get lost or stuck when the puzzles are minimal, and the path almost never branches. In the end, the game felt a lot shorter because of how much easier it was to find where you need to go and get there. If I remember correctly, there were five "worlds" with about four areas a piece. You can't back-track, and you have more than plenty of ammo most of the time. The new inventory was almost good; you had access to what seemed like an unlimited amount of space, but you could only access it between levels or when you died. The rest of the time, you were stuck with nine inventory spaces (eighteen, if you count Sheva's inventory). I suppose that nine spaces isn't so bad, except that it's using the RE4 style of items, where ammo counts separately from guns, not counting the magazine capacity. It definitely didn't help that you couldn't drop items without them disappearing. I know that it's always been that way, but with this way of handling things, it might be worth changing.

Also, Chris punches boulders the size of a semi until they fly into lava. True story.

I sure hope they do better than they did with WoW. Though the good point with it is that I'm not wasting money anymore.

About Resident Evil, well, 4 was good, but 5... meh.
And camera angle and such really helped with the scariness in the firsts. But 4's control and all was a bit better. I also preferred zombie than these guys. I don't like how 5 went from long maps to separated levels. And 9 places in the inventory...

Oh and Chris, yeah. He sure trained a lot since Resident Evil 1. Went from normal size to Schwarzenegger's.

Yeah, both RE5 and DMC4 fell on into the linearity pit.
I think my fastest RE5 run is 2.30 or something. Just to show that it can be done fast.

And I kinda liked Chris' new look, he kinda have to steroid them arms up if he wants to beat Wesker after all. And even then - it wasn't enough. Poor Chris out-manned by the man in glasses.

RE games have always been sort of short, once you've played through them once or twice. 2:30 isn't special. The difference is that all the exploring and learning and all that good stuff was stripped out, and we got through it that much faster the first time. The game definitely felt smaller, though. As for Wesker beating Chris, that's not how I remember the game ending...

Lesson to learn: putting in a QTE which allows you to instantly defeat the final boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9pGE8DU_BI), no matter how tricky you make it to discover, is a bit silly.

Okay, this is a bit of a bump but I played 3rd Birthday.

My god, Aya Brea, what have they DONE to you?

The game barely acknowledges past events, Aya got new abilities from nowhere, lost all previous abilities, the plot goes nowhere FAST except in cutscenes where it goes nowhere SLOWLY. Aya's personality was erased from the previous games due to plot-induced amnesia (which let me say was really unnescessary, SE. It's not like Dissidia didn't also use it for all characters as well.) and instead we got the frail heroine whose clothes are ripped as she takes damage.

They didn't even say the word mitochondria. NOT ONCE.

And you know Maeda? That likeable shy guy with a crush on Aya who could pass for Otacon if this was MGS and gave you useless charms but at least tried? Yeah, he's back. But now he's creepy. And some sort of mad scientist.

"How creepy", you ask? Well in one scene he comments how Aya's tears must taste good. Yay~

Also Aya can now Mindjack people, because nevermind the game based around that flopped, Square wanted it AGAIN.

Also when she mindjacks people, their body look like hers. I'd accept it as an artistic thing if not for the fact half the NPCs reference the "woman looking for her sister", at the same time half don't acknowledge her at all. The game does a pretty poor job of making it clear if other people see her as her or see her as whoever she's possessing.

New York? Doesn't look like New York anymore. Yeah, forget how the first game made an acceptable portrayal of NY, having you fight in the park, having various actual existing localities or anything. This game takes place on Tokyo-with-the-statue-of-liberty. Which brings me to: EVERYONE ACTS JAPANESE. The original game? I don't remember much, I'll admit, but I don't believe there was a shounen manga-ish speech about how "Soldiers in the battlefield only die when they give up on life", instead going for "Soldiers in the battlefield die when they ****ing get burned to death by lovecraftian creatures". Someone in G-Faqs described it well: It's a J-Novel set in NY. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against J-Novels, but this is Parasite Eve! At least keep the old feel from the previous game!

The plot. DEAR GOD THE PLOT. Spoilers as follow.

Aya has amnesia, goes to the past and mindjacks random police officers to prevent twisted from appearing. What are twisted? Apparently some sort of cthulu-wannabes that eat time and space, and appeared because, well, I'm not sure. Apparently because Aya died. And Eve (who BTW doesn't look like Eve) took over her body to prevent her from dying and became a possibility of existing rather than existing. CONFUSED? SO AM I.

New characters come in! But they die without we knowing anything about them other than name so no one cares!

But Grandy, you ask, is there anything redeemable about this? The gameplay is pretty good.

That's it, really. The gameplay is good, but everything else is bad. I wouldn't mind the plot if it didn't use Aya Brea with no reason other than making gamers go "whoo, a game with Aya in eet, I wanted one since PE2". I wouldn't mind doesn't mean I'd like it, though.

Personally, I refuse to accept this game as canon. No older characters act as they should, and it doesn't even do a good job of referencing the old games, instead we have to search for in-game files to read about Aya's previous adventures, where she was badass and had magic ****ing powers.

Well, by the sound of things they seem to have done the series justice by calling this 3rd birthday instead of parasite eve 3.
Gonna hold on to my money a little bit more, it looks interesting. Although I kinda hate the amnesia plottwists.
