I need somebody to make some music for Kyoob (yes, I started again, no I'm not making a thread yet).
I'm simply not musically inclined enough to compose, and AFL's older mixes...well, no offence dude, but they seem kind of dated in relation to the rest of the game.
If you have the time and/or want, then just post here.
ed:
A good idea to get what exactly I'm working for is the HEX series by this guy (https://8bc.org/members/Kosmopop2/).
Has the same amount of energy, but it's more focused and more "game" like.
edos:
Aboutsoandthis and Ninji are likely going to help.
I'd like a good large expanse to choose from, though, so applicants are still appreciated.
-
I can play guitar very well. Don't know if that'd help or not.
-
Not really.
I'm looking for somebody to make chiptunes.
-
Gimme some time to figure out how that guy, Kosmopop made that music and i'll see what I can do.
-
He used a game boy and a cartridge called Little Sound DJ, or LSDJ.
Easier chiptune programs do exist though...like Musagi (which isn't technically a chiptune but whatever) and Milky Tracker (which I've yet to figure out)
-
Alright, I've got musagi, but I can't get it to work for the life of me. I'm working on preparing a few things for my own project right now, but I should be done in a few days and I'll start playing around with those programs.
-
I just started using LSDJ, actually. If you need some help or if anyone wants to collaborate on a few, I'd be willing and will actually have some time to do so soon. Also, Dren, I still owe you some sprites XD.
-
I haven't had my laptop all week. A friend of mine is using its power cord for her finals and stuff cuz hers broke in a very untimely fashion. So, I won't get it back until sometime next week.
-
Alrighty then.
All is good, then, because I've had yet another change in what-exactly-i-want-to-do-for-this-ness, so...yeah.
Still want a happy feel to the music, because...well, Kyoob is a little ball box of bliss.
-
Ehhh... I'm not so good with happy music...
-
Relatively happy.
Not like HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY but...
Yeah, see, I'm currently one of those clients who has no idea what he wants.
-
Haha, I will do my best with the happy-but-not-too-happy-ness. And, of course, why not have two people make music for the loveable kyoob? It'll make things a lot easier.
-
Indeed it would...
I'm thinking about asking on the Game Maker forums but...ugh, that community sucks hard
-
I can make chiptune style music. Well, synth-y, which is kinda similar. So I'm up for it.
-
May I have a sample of your work?
-
This thread actually inspired me to write a tune, but I have no idea how to do chiptunes. >_> I ended up making a midi if you're interested.
-
Sure, just link to it.
Also, in the interest of science, I'll run it through a midi player that emulates nintendo sounds, just to see how it is.

Kinda forgot how to use a forum.:P
I tried to make something old-school gameboy sounding, and this is what I came up with in three hours. It was mainly inspired by that "Navy" song on that website you posted.
<Totally jacked drenrin's box.net idea.
-
I'm not seeing it.
It's just taking me to my box.
-
...
woops.
Try this one?

"Videogame sound.mid"?
About to start listening it, expect a review within 10-15 minutes.
ed: Here's the SCIENCED (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3104371/Projects/Kyoob/Sounds/aboutsoandthisTheme.mp3) version.
I ran it through GXSCC, a chiptune midi instrument set. This particular version doesn't use a Famicom instrument set, but it's a bit more robust than a Nintendo.
Anyways, the song is really, really good.
I like it a lot.
However, it's a little dark for what I had in mind for the game.
I really want to throw together something just to go with the chiptune'd sound, though.
It'd be a fun project.
edos:
Strings always sound a bit cacophonous using this, just so you know.
-
Thank you for the review. :)
Just so you know I'm extremely interested, however I will be away from the internet for a little while. At least a week. I'm in the military and I'm in the process of being re-stationed. I'll also need to settle into my new job. If possible, I'd like to at least contribute when I can.
-
Here's some of my old stuff.
http://www.box.net/shared/u8uhsaq5t2 - Answer
http://www.box.net/shared/e0imp039jf - Bloody Tears
http://www.box.net/shared/gtevbuosoo - Castle Groove
http://www.box.net/shared/8ehecs7jqm - Wicked Child (Wicked, not in the good way)
http://www.box.net/shared/q7u0l5c336 - Garibaldi Courtyard
And here's a preview of a song I'm working on now.
http://www.box.net/shared/s62j6r4x11 - Awake (Battle Mix)
I have a few other songs, but they aren't uploaded. I haven't tried actually composing/arranging a happy piece either, but I can do it pretty easily (my style is more of Gothic Rock/Orchestra, but every composer differs at one point).
-
Do you work in midi at all?
If not then you'll have to find some chiptune instruments for...whatever it is that you use.
If so, then it'll make it a lot easier.
Anyways, reviews:
I did not like Answer. Some of the notes sounded sour, and the pure piano started grating after a while.
Bloody Tears was good old Castlevania (of which I have not played, but have heard the main theme many many times), and overall a good remix.
Castle Groove was...interesting, but it had too little variation tonally. The sounds kind of blurred together. I'd master the song different, personally.
Wicked Child was also pretty interesting, but in a better way. It had an interesting melody, that was very ear catching.
There's a couple sour notes in it, however, and the slow bit near the end sounded very out of place. Especially the piano bit at the 1:15 mark, which seemed like it came right the hell out of nowhere.
I liked Garibaldi Courtyard, that was cool. I loved the melody. However, the drums felt a bit too trebled, and could have used a bass boost.
Also, as with Wicked Child there was a couple bits that felt out of place. Namely one, at around 1:00. The little bit at 1:04 sounded weird.
Awake sounded like it needed some more polish. The high notes in there sounded at odds, and for a battle mix, could use some heavier instrumentation.
Overall, you're not half bad.
Working with chiptunes would be a good way to expand your horizons.
PM me your MSN, so we can talk "business" later.
-
@fruckert
Yeah, after I logged off I realized I didn't give you any chiptunes. My bad. I can't seem to find any of my old ones.
I'm looking into getting a midi-synth, should make things better. The music maker I have is still confusing to me at the moment.
These are all songs for an EP I made a while back, so yeah.
Answer has been redone. I finally found the MP3 on my computer. It's a somewhat better remake, but I intend to do it again. The original piece was great and I'm not doing it any justice. I got more of the notes right in the remake, but the ending is extremely sudden. So yeah. Here's the remake: http://www.box.net/shared/5xvhiug08n
Bloody Tears is the song I used to figure out the program (FL Studio 8, by the way). Turned out okay, but that was mainly cuz I had music sheets to work off of.
Castle Groove was bad, and I plan to redo it. The sudden switch from the wannabe-guitar to the piano was bad, and the weird inclusion of the bad drum solo, was... ech.
Many people have told me Wicked Child's piano piece was bad. I plan to remove that when I remake it.
Awake's not done yet, either. That part there's not even done. I have to remove the electric piano I used and replace it with something else, then up the volume and tempo.
So, yeah, I'll contact ya.
UNRELATED NOTE: I find it funny that I offered to do music for a game with a cube (or Kyoob) and the hosting site I use is called box.

@ninji
which program are u using to make music? frutty loops, acid pro, sound forge, nuendo, cubase, reason, tractor..?
-
Are there any free programs for making chiptunes? I'm pretty skilled in the music
business, so I could give it a shot.
-
There's a couple free trackers, however, they've got a steep learning curve due to it being more of manipulating raw data instead of writing out notes.
If you feel like getting a headache for a while, check out MilkyTracker (http://www.milkytracker.org/), which is the most popular free tracker out there.
There's also Musagi (http://www.drpetter.se/project_musagi.html) (not a tracker), which is basically a midi+ instrumentation thing. It supports a high amount of sounds, and lets you make your own chiptune instruments (or you can use the ones it comes with, either or), and comes with a fair amount of examples so you can learn what the hell you're doing.
Unfortunately, it's got no real documentation (meaning absolutely none), but it's really easy to learn if you **** around with it for a while.
Also, I didn't know that you played music at all.
Care to share some samples?

L-l-l-l-l-late reply
@BruceM
I use Fruity Loops 8 XXL Producer Edition.
@fruckert
I can make midis now. I'm pretty darn good at it now.
Here's a song I recently made, in two different forms.
MIDI VERSION (mp3 format, get that): http://www.box.net/shared/bd34m32sk4jb3dgp236o
DOWNMIX VERSION: http://www.box.net/shared/espz0c9t64k0o0phjiur
I know its not the feel of music you're looking for, but I think that at least one of those two has gotta be the sound-type you're looking for. :3

Maybe you should try with Pixelh8 program?
The Pro Performer, Drum Tech and Death Ray software are available from Pixelh8’s site in the .gb format, for use with Gameboy/Gameboy Advance emulators and Gameboy-compatible USB-based or flashable Smart Cards. The Music Tech V2.0 software is in the .GBA format, for use with Gameboy Advance emulators and similar devices for the GBA.
These synthesizers are admittedly difficult to master, but, like their little brothers the Drum Tech sequencer and the Death Ray Noise Generator, they are also a great deal of fun just to play with. Each application is stable, fully-featured and packed with seemingly endless musical possibilities. So download them all and take them for a spin.

@ninji:
I'll have to give it a look once I get a computer fixed up.
Right now, I'm out of commission.
-
When you're back in commission, send me a PM. I have more MIDIs that are probably a better example then the one I posted.
-
Yup, kinda sorta.
Not too sure what to do with Kyoob, at the moment because I can't remember what needed to be done.
-
Oh. Well then whatevz. Saves the trouble then.
Made these for a game I'm making, but thought you could give a listen:
Subhuman (http://www.box.net/shared/52i2vpioydlnbzr3xvfo) A rearrangement of the theme from Cheetahmen II. Using it for a generic dungeon theme.
Ground of Thievery (http://www.box.net/shared/iyz4m4y7py1v76y8c1ur) I know the actual file says "Vampira Slayer", but I've since renamed the song and used it for a generic bandit camp theme.
Your Choice (http://www.box.net/shared/tuncu2trdt7elnbzuh5z) It's pretty bland, but I'm only using it as a title screen theme.
Tears of Blood (http://www.box.net/shared/omm2su3m7vum0kcb9b5e) Yet another Bloody Tears mix from Castlevania 2. Using it as a battle theme.
Standoff (http://www.box.net/shared/bfnpyo0213z57fxal3q9) A cutscene theme.
Double Dragons (http://www.box.net/shared/e5ge8i38pvzmhs7nk9mx) An arrangement of the Mission 1 theme from the first Double Dragon. Short, but only using it for a short segment of my game anyway.
EDIT: This one I just made has a more happier feel to it, probably what you're looking for for Kyoob, but yeah.
A Place to Rest (http://www.box.net/shared/jrkjng8zl9i4pv4dto8m) Used for towns in my RPG.
